Nestled under 150 year old pecan and oak trees, we carefully and thoughtfully preserved and restored this rare 1928 Federal Style Craftsman near downtown Atlanta, while adding a new 2 story, 1,000 sf addition in the back. The addition, like the house boasts, 10 foot ceilings, yet is sited in a way to seamlessly blend with the original house, without dominating the unique original structure.

In the family room which houses a large TV we created a durable and easy care space with a cowhide rug in a free form edge to contrast with the straight edges of the sofas, yet relate back in terms of leather and cowhide masculine feel. A vintage classical King Kong poster hangs on the wall behind the lamp. On the coffee table, to pick up more color, we put a basket lined with three kinds of red berries with a primitive antique wooden wooden bowl inset into it, and contrasted the rustic textures with simple silver balls and an over scale timber candle.

In the foyer, both art and architecture set the pace for the tone of the apartment. A Louise Bourgeois, a Matisse, and antique primitive sculptures are compliments by subtly glazed walls and a metallic chair rail which runs the perimeter of the room. A Doris Leslie Blau antique carpet is counterpoised by the strong dropped ceiling that house custom WOKA Hoffmann light fixtures reflecting the geometry of the carpet below and the shapes of the foyer itself.

The family room leading off the kitchen was a cozy gathering place for an imaginary family as this house was being staged for sale. The hunt table behind the sofa has two drop leafs which create a narrow console table behind the sofa, or with all leaves up quickly seats up to eight people. The antique Lancaster County tool tray on top of the table holds fruit or candles and has a sturdy center handle to be easily carried away. Antique Beidermeier chairs with black leather seats complement the color of the kitchen cabinets and are a transitional design between traditional and modern. The large oil canvas by Edwinna Brennan of an energetic abstract of a bicycle gives young energy to an otherwise soothing space.

This all-steel, seamlessly welded table base is a replica of the client’s original table base, scaled up in size to suit a new, larger dining room. A 3D design rendering ensured all proportions were perfect before building began. Slip-rolled sheet metal follows the base’s exact curves; the applied directional grain and dark patina also match the original. An engineered internal frame ensures the table can easily hold the gorgeous, 400-lb slab of Starphire® glass on top. Seamless welding gives this table base a modern, refined vibe that contrasts with the industrial-yet-primitive look of the anvil shape.
