Inspiration for a contemporary bathroom remodel in Santa Barbara

Converted from an existing Tuff Shed garage, the Beech Haus ADU welcomes short stay guests in the heart of the bustling Williams Corridor neighborhood. Natural light dominates this self-contained unit, with windows on all sides, yet maintains privacy from the primary unit. Double pocket doors between the Living and Bedroom areas offer spatial flexibility to accommodate a variety of guests and preferences. And the open vaulted ceiling makes the space feel airy and interconnected, with a playful nod to its origin as a truss-framed garage. A play on the words Beach House, we approached this space as if it were a cottage on the coast. Durable and functional, with simplicity of form, this home away from home is cozied with curated treasures and accents. We like to personify it as a vacationer: breezy, lively, and carefree.

Set in a former cap-and-gown factory in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood, this 1,200-square-foot loft was reimagined as a layered, expressive home for an artistically minded client. What was once a tired builder-grade space is now a study in contrast: industrial bones softened by color, pattern, and personal history. Each room is defined by vibrant finishes—colorful cabinetry, statement tile, and a guest bath accented with unexpected purple grout (and a goose!)—all nodding to the client’s bold, creative spirit. Vintage family heirlooms mingle effortlessly with fresh textiles and sculptural lighting, weaving together nostalgia with a modern, eclectic space.

The homeowner wanted a hill country style outdoor living space larger than their existing covered area. The main structure is now 280 sq ft with a 9-1/2 feet long kitchen complete with a grill, fridge & utensil drawers. The secondary structure is 144 sq ft with a gas fire pit lined with crushed glass. The table on the left in the main structure was a piece of granite the homeowner had and wanted it made into a table, so we made a wrought iron frame for it. There are more sentimental touches! The swing by the fire pit is a newly made replica of a swing the husband had made in wood shop in high school over 50 years ago. The flooring is stamped concrete in a wood bridge plank pattern. Trendy dark wood floor home yoga studio photo in New York with beige walls

This stunning ceiling is a clear, smooth cedar with a natural finish. That finish was chosen to highlight the natural color variation in the cedar. The ceiling was framed to allow for the change in directions of the ceiling finish. The center was vaulted for the placement of an impressive chandelier and some indirect lighting. The vaulted area is finished with decorative tin.
