A master bedroom fit for a bed and breakfast! This client wanted to feel at home, yet on vacation at all times in their space. We combined the calming colors of grey blue and green with cream and white to achieve a soft, subtle appearance. Through unique textures such as grasscloth and velvet, we brought different feels throughout the space.

This barn used to be the carriage house for an adjacent property, and was initially in pretty bad shape: no roof, sagging beams, and so much Redwood duff and ivy that the owner didn't realize there was a concrete floor underneath. A framer helped the owner reframe the barn from the inside, using dimensional lumber to keep the integrity of the original studs. (Back in the day, a 2 x 4 actually measured 2" x 4".) The siding seen here was originally on the inside of this same wall. Originally the barn had three "rooms", and when the third room collapsed the wall was replaced with plywood.

Flavin Architects was chosen for the renovation due to their expertise with Mid-Century-Modern and specifically Henry Hoover renovations. Respect for the integrity of the original home while accommodating a modern family’s needs is key. The owner said "any color but white" for her farmhouse kitchen country kitchen. Earthy and elemental materials are selected for the home that reference the barn without directly mimicking it. Wooden members found inside the barn and from other barns bridge ceilings and are used in floors along with rustic slate adding to a sense of simplicity to the farmhouse design.

The existing kitchen was completely remodeled to create a compact chef's kitchen. The client is a true chef, who teaches cooking classes, and we were able to get a professional grade kitchen in an 11x7 footprint! The new island creates adequate prep space. The bookcases on the front add a ton of storage and interesting display in an otherwise useless walkway. The South wall is the exposed brick original to the 1900's home. To compliment the brick, we chose a warm nutmeg stain in cherry cabinets. The countertops are a durable quartz that look like marble but are sturdy enough for this work horse kitchen. The retro pendants are oversized to add a lot of interest in this small space.
