This media room has a flat screen TV as well as an integrated recessed projector and screen. There are black out shades on the windows at the rear of the room to negate light for a high quality viewing experience. The speaker system is integrated into the cabinetry and ceiling systems. The Bookworm book shelves are flexible and offer some asymmetry which gives the room a more relaxed feel. This is a 5000+ sf vacation home that sits up on a hill with stunning views of Carmel Valley. The goal was to remodel the home with the intention of harnessing the beauty of its natural setting, while creating a tranquil place of respite and refuge. As the client has kids, large show dogs, and family/friends enjoying the space, it was important to use finishes that could sustain multiple end users. In lieu of hardwood floors, I specified a ceramic faux bois tile for high traffic areas that looks like hardwood but is virtually indestructible. With warm finishes and sculptural forms, the newly designed home is now dynamic, earthy and inviting.

The primary bath was designed as a continuation of the home’s architectural language, prioritizing proportion, material restraint, and connection to the exterior landscape. A freestanding tub is positioned directly at the window to create a deliberate visual axis, allowing natural light and treetop views to become part of the bathing experience. Millwork, stone surfaces, and flooring transitions were resolved during the design selection phase to maintain a clean material hierarchy. Warm wood tones soften the crispness of the stone and tile, while plumbing fixtures introduce subtle metal contrast without interrupting the tonal palette. Negative space is used intentionally, allowing form, scale, and light to carry the composition rather than decorative layering. The result is a primary bath that reads as calm architectural space first — refined, grounded, and designed for daily ritual rather than visual excess.

Often referred to as the “Summer White House,” where President Roosevelt would host VIPs from the U.S. and the world during his presidency, the Queen Anne-style home has undergone a patchwork of renovation projects over the years. The current rehabilitation is aimed at avoiding ongoing smaller scale site work in the future. For replacement of the impressive wraparound porch, the National Park Service (NPS) selected Accoya wood, a Cradle to Cradle-certified material that is durable and stable, and is guaranteed against rot and decay for 50 years in exterior use. In addition, Accoya does not shrink or swell, making it an ideal material for a variety of exterior applications. “In caring for such an important property, we needed to ensure that we used the highest quality, environmentally friendly products that were sympathetic to the environment,” said Susan Sarna, museum curator for the NPS. “In addition, given the negative impact that renovation works have on visitor experience, we wanted to use a product that would allow us to reduce ongoing maintenance at the site.” Building Type: National Historic Site – Residential Client: U.S. National Park Service
