The proposal analyzes the site as a series of existing flows or “routes” across the landscape. The negotiation of both constructed and natural systems establishes the logic of the site plan and the orientation and organization of the new home. Conceptually, the project becomes a highly choreographed knot at the center of these routes, drawing strands in, engaging them with others, and propelling them back out again. The project’s intent is to capture and harness the physical and ephemeral sense of these latent natural movements as a way to promote in the architecture the wanderlust the surrounding landscape inspires. At heart, the client’s initial family agenda--a home as antidote to the city and basecamp for exploration--establishes the ethos and design objectives of the work. Photography - Bruce Damonte

Inspiration for a mid-sized transitional dark wood floor and brown floor kitchen/dining room combo remodel in Charlotte with no fireplace and gray walls

SaA was hired to design a state-of-the-art 2,100 sq ft recording studio and performance space. We negotiated the purchase and disassembly of a rural barn in upstate New York. The lumber was then graded and coded in Texas and shipped to our site for a modern-day barn-raising, deep within a Redwood grove. Granite slab steps and a graceful hand-forged handrail negotiate a richly planted hillside. The challenge of this site was to design functional living spaces while resolving a series of problems. Two entry courts offer suitable welcomes to the home: a formal granite court that is approached from above as one descends down a once blind driveway, and a more utilitarian play court off the garage. The rear yard, once disconnected from the house, is terraced and suitable for entertaining. A granite stair descends from the terrace to a new expanded lower lawn. A custom fire pit sits off the upper terrace and provides a more intimate gathering space.

For this custom built home, we had the privilege of working alongside our client, an architect, who had a vision of his dream home that we were to bring to life. Designed to comfortably house two adults and eight children, this home was designed to perfection. Our goal was to pull those design ideas from the head of our client, put them on to paper, and make them a reality. Creating a set of plans that met not only our client's design ideas, but the neighborhood developers as well, took extensive teamwork and negotiations.

This new, ground-up home was recently built atop the Richmond Hills. Despite the beautiful site with its panoramic 270-degree view, the lot had been left undeveloped over the years due to its modest size and challenging approval issues. Saikley Architects handled the negotiations for County approvals, and worked closely with the owner-builder to create a 2,300 sq. ft., three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath family home that maximizes the site’s potential. The first-time owner-builder is a landscape builder by trade, and Saikley Architects coordinated closely with for him on this spec home. Saikley Architects provided building design details which the owner then carried through in many unique interior design and furniture design details throughout the house. The Kipling house is a new addition to the Montrose neighborhood. Designed for a family of five, it allows for generous open family zones oriented to large glass walls facing the street and courtyard pool. The courtyard also creates a buffer between the master suite and the children's play and bedroom zones. The master suite echoes the first floor connection to the exterior, with large glass walls facing balconies to the courtyard and street. Fixed wood screens provide privacy on the first floor while a large sliding second floor panel allows the street balcony to exchange privacy control with the study. Material changes on the exterior articulate the zones of the house and negotiate structural loads.

This fun family room is the result of a great Client-Designer collaboration. This new house was a builder spec house, and the Client had negotiated to have one built in included in their purchase price. She had decided to have bookcases built to the left and right of the shallow fireplace. Instead, we had the "free" built in constructed in the Living Room (take a look at the photo of the LR.) The shallow stone work would have been lost in the shadows of the bookcases, and the room could have felt too heavy/serious. We were both delighted with our choice!

A residence designed for informal gathering and relaxation on a quiet cove near Acadia National Park. Conceived of as a compound of connected gathering spaces with adjacent private retreat spaces. The "village" of structures is designed to open and close seasonally with large sliding barn doors. These also modulate light, air and views into and out of the cottages. Carefully positioned to take advantage of the rich variety of views and sloping topography, the cottages have integral terraces and retaining walls to negotiate the undulating land-form. One arrives at the high point of the site and the long barn axis and navigates between the cottages to the main entrance. Once inside, the home deliberately reveals unique views to the ocean, mountains and surrounding spruce forest.
