2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY GRAND AWARD WINNER Having a small 10’ x 12’ kitchen tucked in the back corner of their home wasn’t working for this this young and growing family. Its cramped layout didn’t allow for a breakfast area and storage space was non-existent, both major issues for their busy day-to-day lifestyle. After consulting with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, they decided to build a 300 square foot addition onto the back of this 1960’s vintage split level. The planned addition expanded and updated the home’s kitchen via a contemporary design, added plenty of storage and provided a much needed breakfast seating area. More importantly, it created a great place for the family to gather. The new kitchen contains a 48” professional-grade range and a large built-in refrigerator, as well as lots of cabinetry and counter space to meet client’s storage needs. Use of lighter shaker style custom painted cabinetry with honed black counter tops has lightened the space tremendously. A large island with distress black cherry cabinetry ans a mahogany countertop was installed and has become the focal point of the kitchen. By removing a partition that previously separated the kitchen from the dining room, the new design has created a wide open floor plan. The casual dining room flows right into a casual seating area with a corner fireplace. French doors open onto a large new deck. Best of all, the addition lets the family spend time together before, during and after mean preparation. It’s truly become the hearth of the home.

We tried creating this space with poured footings and walls that go below frost, creating the living space. With the harsh winter of 2017, the weather we encountered did not stop us from pushing through the setbacks to completing this momentous outdoor oasis. We are able to work in all the elements the North East can and has thrown at us. We have an extremely knowledgeable crew and appropriate, well-maintained equipment. We decided to let this gorgeous tile take center stage by creating an eye-catching backsplash. The flooring also incorporates details that connect back to the Pewabic tiles used on the walls. OVERALL RESULTS The remodeled kitchen has improved the feel of the whole first floor. A clear pathway runs from the living room through the kitchen and from the kitchen into the dining room. These clients asked us to build an arch to hide the shower curtain rod in this basement bathroom. Now it gives the feel of a cornice with window drapery. With Carrara marble subway tile on the shower walls and a cool commercial porcelain tile on the bathroom floor, this previously non existent basement bathroom accommodates this young families modern needs and tastes. This furniture arrangement is used for space saving reasons. The table is angled on the diagonal, not only just for esthetic reasons but for several practical reasons. Due to the limited space in front of the breakfast bar, placing on the diagonal allows for more room for thecounter stools. The bench seat for two appears to be non-existent giving the illusion there is more space than there really is. In addition, the contemporary wave ceiling light fixture is also angled centered over the table.

This kitchen was semi-altered to create a much more ample space to store items and employ more work surfaces which were almost non-existent. In addition we installed a black corona countertop with chamfered edge, elegant new stainless sink and faucets and mirrored backsplash to add style but also to enlarge the feeling of the narrow space. The original cabinets were painted a lacquer black and the floor tiled in a bright red Forbo linoleum. In this multi-story condo, the top level has access to a balcony with a 'forever' view of the ocean and beaches below. Storage was non existant! A custom cabinet was built providing storage for a beverage fridge and a full dry bar. An additional extra deep tall cabinetry was custom built for outdoor lounge cushions and pillows.
