Inspiration for a mid-sized modern girl carpeted and gray floor nursery remodel in New Orleans with gray walls

We designed a sweet little nursery room for an expecting couple in Manhattan. The walls were painted in a dusty rose, and it was further warmed up with walnut wood for both the crib and dresser. All the items were chosen to have longevity. We wanted the room to be able to grow with the baby so we picked a crib that could be converted into a toddler bed, a dresser with a detachable changing-table top, a wall shelf that could eventually become a bookcase for a teen, a comfy glider chair that could be reupholstered later to fit in a different room if need be, and art that could grow with the room and child.

This couple contacted me before their little bundle of joy arrived to design their nursery. We started with what used to be a very pink little girl’s room, decorated by the previous owners, and turned it into a contemporary cozy space for their newborn. The carpet flooring was replaced with hardwood maple, a modern baseboard replaced the traditional looking ones, new closet doors with a maple frame and frosted glass inserts replaced the standard white doors and recessed lighting was added to brighten up the once dark room. The couple didn’t want the standard pink or blue nursery, but opted for a more gender neutral and modern color palette. So using my favorite base – grey – we added some foxy orange pops! The maple and grey crib and dresser are Oeuf, the orange glider came from Room and Board, the windows were covered by Room and Board as well and most of the accessories and decor was ordered on Etsy.

This fanciful floral nursery features a wall entirely of silk flowers. The feminine details like the upholstered crib, chandelier and metallic artwork are balanced by the clean lines of the furniture. It's a modern day trip into Wonderland. Christine Farah Photography

Nursery's can be full of child-like things, or they can be very adult. This is a little of both, but it's definitely geared towards making the parents comfortable, happy, and relaxed.
