When a client tells us they’re a mid-century collector and long for a kitchen design unlike any other we are only too happy to oblige. This kitchen is saturated in mid-century charm and its custom features make it difficult to pin-point our favorite aspect! Cabinetry We had the pleasure of partnering with one of our favorite Denver cabinet shops to make our walnut dreams come true! We were able to include a multitude of custom features in this kitchen including frosted glass doors in the island, open cubbies, a hidden cutting board, and great interior cabinet storage. But what really catapults these kitchen cabinets to the next level is the eye-popping angled wall cabinets with sliding doors, a true throwback to the magic of the mid-century kitchen. Streamline brushed brass cabinetry pulls provided the perfect lux accent against the handsome walnut finish of the slab cabinetry doors. Tile Amidst all the warm clean lines of this mid-century kitchen we wanted to add a splash of color and pattern, and a funky backsplash tile did the trick! We utilized a handmade yellow picket tile with a high variation to give us a bit of depth; and incorporated randomly placed white accent tiles for added interest and to compliment the white sliding doors of the angled cabinets, helping to bring all the materials together. Counter We utilized a quartz along the counter tops that merged lighter tones with the warm tones of the cabinetry. The custom integrated drain board (in a starburst pattern of course) means they won’t have to clutter their island with a large drying rack. As an added bonus, the cooktop is recessed into the counter, to create an installation flush with the counter surface. Stair Rail Not wanting to miss an opportunity to add a touch of geometric fun to this home, we designed a custom steel handrail. The zig-zag design plays well with the angles of the picket tiles and the black finish ties in beautifully with the black metal accents in the kitchen. Lighting We removed the original florescent light box from this kitchen and replaced it with clean recessed lights with accents of recessed undercabinet lighting and a terrifically vintage fixture over the island that pulls together the black and brushed brass metal finishes throughout the space. This kitchen has transformed into a strikingly unique space creating the perfect home for our client’s mid-century treasures.

**Spatial Composition & Architectural Volume** This is a room conceived as a stage for a single object, and the architecture obligingly recedes into the role of proscenium. The plan reads as a generous, laterally-oriented salon — likely a piano room carved from the corner of a metropolitan penthouse — organized around an L-shaped glazing sequence that turns the corner and dissolves two of the four enclosing planes. A dropped soffit tray, articulated as a crisply mitred perimeter reveal with an integrated cove, floats above the seating and instrument zone, its shadow-gap detailing lowering the apparent datum and conferring intimacy on an otherwise expansive volume. The plaster ceiling reads as a single continuous membrane, its recessed channels doubling as concealed curtain tracks and linear light slots, thereby suppressing any surface-mounted apparatus. On the left, a full-height run of hand-carved, ripple-textured oak millwork operates as both threshold and tectonic bookend — a vertical mass that anchors the composition against the weightlessness of the fenestration opposite. The pier between the two window bays is clad in pale ribbed limestone or fluted plaster, functioning as a quiet pilaster that structures the sightlines rather than interrupting them. Circulation is centrifugal: the herringbone-laid oak parquet establishes a diagonal grain that pulls the eye toward the terrace, while the rug's rectilinear footprint carves out a defined *piano nobile* island within the open field. The grand piano, positioned obliquely with its raised lid oriented back into the room, becomes the volume's sculptural fulcrum — its cabriole-derived silhouette and blade-thin tapered legs (a distinctly contemporary reinterpretation, likely a designer-authored instrument) providing curvilinear counterpoint to the room's orthogonal discipline. **Materiality, Color & Texture** The palette is a study in monochromatic warmth punctuated by a single decisive act of contrast. Nearly every surface resides within a narrow chromatic band of oatmeal, bone, greige and pale honey — undertones consistently warm-neutral, veering toward the sandy rather than the grey, which prevents the minimalism from reading as clinical. The floor's white-oak herringbone is finished with a matte, lightly limed patina that keeps the grain legible without gloss; the field rug in silk-and-viscose introduces a lustrous, cloud-like abraded pattern, its mineral-grey striations reading almost as sumi-e wash or weathered concrete, and providing the room's only tonal modulation at floor level. The drapery — a densely woven linen or linen-blend in a slubbed sand tone, hung with tightly gathered, full-height pinch pleats — carries a subtle vertical stripe or ribbed jacquard that catches raking light and animates the perimeter. Against this, the carved oak volume at left is the tactile protagonist: a low-relief, chiselled facetting that reads as adze-worked or gouged, generating a shifting moiré of micro-shadow and elevating a utilitarian storage wall into applied art. The piano's satin-black lacquer is the compositional anchor — deep, absorbent, and deliberately non-reflective on its exterior case while its interior lid reveals a mottled, patinated bronze-brown, a warm secret held within the black. Brass appears with real restraint: the lid hinges, the harp and action, the sabot-like disc on the bench flank. Nature supplies the only saturated chroma — the emerald ivy hedge framed in the left window and the topiary beyond the right — treated as living tapestry, effectively a curated *borrowed landscape*. **Lighting, Atmosphere & Style Profile** The lighting strategy is almost entirely subtractive: daylight is admitted in broad, low-glare sheets through minimal-sightline steel or slim-profile aluminium glazing, then softened and diffused by the sheer-adjacent linen and the pale, light-returning plaster envelope. The result is a high-key, shadowless luminosity with a distinctly diffuse northern quality, in which form is described by gradient rather than by hard contrast — note how the piano's black mass reads as silhouette against the terrace glare, while its curved bentwood rim catches a single soft specular highlight. Artificial illumination is entirely concealed within the ceiling reveals and coves, ensuring that after dark the room will be washed rather than punctured; the deliberate absence of decorative pendants or table lamps in this frame reinforces the reading of the instrument as the sole permitted ornament. Atmospherically the room is contemplative, acoustically soft, and tuned to a single activity — a *musica da camera* interior in the truest sense. Stylistically it synthesizes into what might best be termed **Soft Minimalism with a couture-craft inflection**: the rigour and reductive detailing of late-modernist practice, warmed by the tactile, hand-worked surfaces and neutral tonalities of Japandi and Belgian-inflected quiet luxury. The governing thesis is one of *sublimated luxury* — value expressed through millwork tolerance, drapery yardage, plaster craft and the confident emptiness of the plan, rather than through pattern, colour or accumulation.

Before the renovation, this 17th century farmhouse was a rabbit warren of small dark rooms with low ceilings. A new owner wanted to keep the character but modernize the house, so CTA obliged, transforming the house completely. The family room, a large but very low ceiling room, was radically transformed by removing the ceiling to expose the roof structure above and rebuilding a more open new stair; the exposed beams were salvaged from an historic barn elsewhere on the property. The kitchen was moved to the former Dining Room, and also opened up to show the vaulted roof. The mud room and laundry were rebuilt to connect the farmhouse to a Barn (See “Net Zero Barn” project), also using salvaged timbers. Original wide plank pine floors were carefully numbered, replaced, and matched where needed. Historic rooms in the front of the house were carefully restored and upgraded, and new bathrooms and other amenities inserted where possible. The project is also a net zero energy project, with solar panels, super insulated walls, and triple glazed windows. CTA also assisted the owner with selecting all interior finishes, furniture, and fixtures. This project won “Best in Massachusetts” at the 2019 International Interior Design Association and was the 2020 Recipient of a Design Citation by the Boston Society of Architects. This luxury bespoke wine cabinet was custom-made by Acorn for a residence in Sutton, Surrey. Our clients, who collect and enjoy fine wine, commissioned us to create a dedicated wine storage unit that combined exceptional functionality in an impressive statement piece. The resulting cabinet provides tailored storage and display in a stunning finish that coordinates with the interior décor style of the house. It is built-in to the bespoke floor to ceiling wall panelling we installed in the hallway. The wall panels cleverly conceal cupboard storage for clothing, footwear and other accessories. Creating hidden doors using wooden wall panels adds storage to the entrance hall while maintaining a beautifully, cohesive, streamlined look. Bespoke wine cabinet The distinctive tailormade wine cabinet features made to measure wine racks, horizontal bottle holders and shelving. The large doors are made of toughened glass sitting within a solid oak frame. While ensuring the wine bottles are stored in the correct position, the cabinet has turned an underutilised space into an eye-catching display feature in the entrance hall and when viewed from the dining table area. Oak room divider doors We also handcrafted a pair of coordinated minimalist oak partition doors that lead into the dining room area. Internal room divider doors are a superb way to create distinct spaces and separate rooms. The doors give our clients control over how they use their living space and can be opened to allow freedom of movement and create a sense of space or closed to provide privacy and a cosy atmosphere. The doors are designed to blend seamlessly into the cabinetry when opened giving the impression of there being no doors at all. Oak cabinetry with a graphite stain finish The oak cabinetry has been flawlessly finished with a graphite wood stain and satin lacquer, which gives the surface a premium and protective hardwearing finish. The grey stain allows the beauty of the wood’s natural grain to show through while also adding depth and character, creating a contemporary rustic aesthetic.
