Before the renovation, this 17th century farmhouse was a rabbit warren of small dark rooms with low ceilings. A new owner wanted to keep the character but modernize the house, so CTA obliged, transforming the house completely. The family room, a large but very low ceiling room, was radically transformed by removing the ceiling to expose the roof structure above and rebuilding a more open new stair; the exposed beams were salvaged from an historic barn elsewhere on the property. The kitchen was moved to the former Dining Room, and also opened up to show the vaulted roof. The mud room and laundry were rebuilt to connect the farmhouse to a Barn (See “Net Zero Barn” project), also using salvaged timbers. Original wide plank pine floors were carefully numbered, replaced, and matched where needed. Historic rooms in the front of the house were carefully restored and upgraded, and new bathrooms and other amenities inserted where possible. The project is also a net zero energy project, with solar panels, super insulated walls, and triple glazed windows. CTA also assisted the owner with selecting all interior finishes, furniture, and fixtures. This project won “Best in Massachusetts” at the 2019 International Interior Design Association and was the 2020 Recipient of a Design Citation by the Boston Society of Architects.

Headland is a NextHouse, situated to take advantage of the site’s panoramic ocean views while still providing privacy from the neighboring property. The home’s solar orientation provides passive solar heat gains in the winter while the home’s deep overhangs provide shade for the large glass windows in the summer. The mono-pitch roof was strategically designed to slope up towards the ocean to maximize daylight and the views.
The exposed post and beam construction allows for clear, open spaces throughout the home, but also embraces a connection with the land to invite the outside in. The aluminum clad windows, fiber cement siding and cedar trim facilitate lower maintenance without compromising the home’s quality or aesthetic.
The homeowners wanted to create a space that welcomed guests for frequent family gatherings. Acorn Deck House Company obliged by designing the home with a focus on indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces with a large, open great room and kitchen, expansive decks and a flexible layout to accommodate visitors. There is also a private master suite and roof deck, which showcases the views while maintaining privacy.

Different angles of the living room. I don't like the traditional designs of living room. "TV, couch and coffee table" is very square, rigid and without personality. As you can see, there is no couch in this living room. One pallet seating area, one single bed used as "couch/bed". Two curtains from Walmart to give some privacy. No TV in the room, because once you have a TV, you are obligated to watch it. Living room should be a room that you actually "live" in.
Some items in this picture:
Chandelier: $12 from Ross
Curtains: $8 from Walmart
Lamp: antique from Goodwill $15
Pillow cushions: all from Goodwill $1 each
Colorful red pallet cover: from honduras street stand $20

With big windows or double doors, you need shade solutions that are flexible and easy to adjust or just brush aside completely even. And draperies offer one of the most versatile and effortless window treatment options out there, especially for these longer or wider sections. In one of our latest projects, the customer’s Venetian glass doors were capped by a Palladian window, making them quite tall. Long drapes in a color scheme complementing shade served as a great choice for covering both, offering simple maneuverability via the overhead drapery rail. When a client tells us they’re a mid-century collector and long for a kitchen design unlike any other we are only too happy to oblige. This kitchen is saturated in mid-century charm and its custom features make it difficult to pin-point our favorite aspect!
Cabinetry
We had the pleasure of partnering with one of our favorite Denver cabinet shops to make our walnut dreams come true! We were able to include a multitude of custom features in this kitchen including frosted glass doors in the island, open cubbies, a hidden cutting board, and great interior cabinet storage. But what really catapults these kitchen cabinets to the next level is the eye-popping angled wall cabinets with sliding doors, a true throwback to the magic of the mid-century kitchen. Streamline brushed brass cabinetry pulls provided the perfect lux accent against the handsome walnut finish of the slab cabinetry doors.
Tile
Amidst all the warm clean lines of this mid-century kitchen we wanted to add a splash of color and pattern, and a funky backsplash tile did the trick! We utilized a handmade yellow picket tile with a high variation to give us a bit of depth; and incorporated randomly placed white accent tiles for added interest and to compliment the white sliding doors of the angled cabinets, helping to bring all the materials together.
Counter
We utilized a quartz along the counter tops that merged lighter tones with the warm tones of the cabinetry. The custom integrated drain board (in a starburst pattern of course) means they won’t have to clutter their island with a large drying rack. As an added bonus, the cooktop is recessed into the counter, to create an installation flush with the counter surface.
Stair Rail
Not wanting to miss an opportunity to add a touch of geometric fun to this home, we designed a custom steel handrail. The zig-zag design plays well with the angles of the picket tiles and the black finish ties in beautifully with the black metal accents in the kitchen.
Lighting
We removed the original florescent light box from this kitchen and replaced it with clean recessed lights with accents of recessed undercabinet lighting and a terrifically vintage fixture over the island that pulls together the black and brushed brass metal finishes throughout the space.
This kitchen has transformed into a strikingly unique space creating the perfect home for our client’s mid-century treasures.

Motorized roller shades offer a fantastic enhancement to any window, even ones with curved frame sections. The unique aesthetic of arched windows creates an opportunity to combine natural daylight for indoor illumination with the effective sunlight management features of window shades. Control exactly how much sunlight you want to stream into your living spaces by adjusting the roller shades’ position. You can easily use the window’s higher arch section as a consistent light source while covering the rest of the frame as you see fit. To find the perfect high-end shade systems for your arched windows or other glass openings, get in touch with Master Blinds at 877-708-5883 to schedule a free in-person consultation with no obligation.

We were more than thrilled when our Wisper Bay clients came to us looking to continue the remodel process in the downstairs area of their Palm City home. We had just finished their upstairs master bathroom and were officially in love with the design as well as our working relationship with this lovely couple. To have them trust us to now take on an even larger project, double the size of the first, was such a huge nod of confidence and we could not have been happier to oblige.
The downstairs had great space but lacked the personality and warmth the clients wanted. It felt dark, lacking natural light and did not reflect their taste or match the look of what we had just completed upstairs. The goal was to continue the flow that was created upstairs and making the entire home feel uniform and continuous.
We added a 12’ set of French doors, new waterproof vinyl flooring, removed the many walls enclosing the existing kitchen, and reconfigured the space to make more sense. We went with a two tone look featuring all new Dura Supreme cabinets, replaced all the appliances to include a Fulgor Milano gas range making the kitchen a true chefs dream. We also added a huge island with quartz countertops, making entertaining and cleaning a breeze.

Thinking about finishing your basement in Buford, GA? Costs typically range from $15,000 for a basic finished space to $150,000+ for a full in-law suite, with most Gwinnett County homeowners spending $35,000–$65,000 for a mid-range finish with a full bathroom. Key cost drivers include adding a legal bedroom (which requires an egress window), waterproofing if the basement isn't already dry, and flooring and finish selections. A $50,000 mid-range basement finish typically returns 60–70% of cost in home resale value regionally — even more if it adds a bedroom or full bath. The entry allowed for a number of elements. The builder obliged us, adding white oak to the bench seat and board and batten to the walls. Hooks were added for mudroom convenience, but the entry still retains sophistication. The client's cherry demi-lune fit perfectly in the space, and a dried arrangement graces the table. Charming "flowers" made from books provides a touch of whimsy. Custom louvered shutters were installed to diffuse the light and provide privacy.

School settings require students to maintain concentration and sit still for long periods of time throughout the day. Needless to say, that can be tough not only for teenagers but adults as well. Harnessing sheer roller shades to cover classroom windows helps ensure sunlight doesn’t become a hindrance in the path of education, but a facilitator of better learning. By diffusing sunlight that enters the classrooms, students don’t suffer the negative cognitive impact of harsh glare that’s strainful on the eyes. Instead, they enjoy the benefits sunlight plays in maintaining alertness and attentiveness. Classroom window shades that provide better privacy also help to keep outside distractions from interfering with the lessons, keeping students focused on the subject at hand. The right use of colorful roller shades can also complement sensory cues for focus created by the classroom environment. Talk to Master Blinds’ design team to see what roller shades can offer your classroom spaces. A new-to-me realtor calls Tuesday mid-day asking about my services. The phone call quickly turned into a 'yes' but I mentioned unless I do this 'tomorrow', it couldn't get done until next week Tuesday or Wednesday due to other obligations.
It's in Cayucos, which poses another issue - do I make the trip up to preview (it's an hour away, do I have time), or can I get what I need off of the internet?
AND we had rain to contend with... it's never easy to stage in the rain.
Fortunately I'm a very spatially-minded person and could make my plans based on the existing internet photos. A girl needs her plans!
So Wednesday, between the spurts of rain, my sons and I spend all morning packing for this stage, and Wednesday afternoon / into evening my sons and I head out, unload, and stage this beautiful.... no..... GORGEOUS home ON THE WATER in Cayucos. WOW!!!
The boys told me upon arrival: 'We should buy this!' I'm thinking the same thing!
So, in retrospect, this stage was a vacant, sight-unseen home, and within about 24 hours went from realtor request to stage-done status.
Please forgive the darkness of the photos, it was 6:30 at night when we were done, it was dark!

The soft and elegant look that sheer roller shades introduce brings with it a wonderful way to harness natural lighting to create peaceful indoor environments. Sunlight diffusing sheer window shades eliminate the harshness from the sun while still making enough of it available to illuminate indoor spaces. Coupled with amazing privacy benefits that prevent visibility from the outside, sheer shades for bedroom windows or any other part of the household are an absolutely fantastic option.
