When this homeowner’s neighbor removed two, two- story-high Ficus trees, her side-yard became baron and sunbaked. Concrete covers virtually the whole area from the house to the property line, but because the side-yard has a lot of foot traffic and serves as a sitting area to the basement apartment, the owner did not want to remove any of the concrete. The solution was to put up fencing to block the view of the neighbor’s house, then upcycle wine barrels and 55-gallon drums into huge planters. The drums are large enough to accommodate a full-sized tree and provide the added advantage of giving height to smaller trees to provide further screening of the neighbor’s house. Everything was painted in bright colors to give the space a cheery Caribbean feel. The neighbor’s tree removal ended up as a blessing in disguise, because what had been a drab trough-way was transformed into a happy patio.

The back deck and garage was designed to accommodate an active families needs. Dining and grilling space close to the house for every day use, and an open rooftop space with plenty or serving and flexible space for the families ever changing needs. The deck was made with IPE decking, and the clients are going to let it grey out rather than try to oil it yearly. The grey color will contrast perfectly with the polished stainless steel cable railings. The pergola has two areas with permanent shade panels. One area is completely covered with aluminum roofing to keep the young area dry, while the other side has loved shade panels made out of cedar to let light and air through, while also blocking the to afternoon sun. The planters are position to bock unwanted views and also to define exterior rooms.

The walnut was locally harvested, handcrafted and then finished with a hand rubbed plant-based natural oil & wax finish. Our finish contains plant oils and natural waxes, which bring out the natural beauty of the wood while providing a strong protective finish. With leathered stone countertops, a custom wine cabinet and all LED lighting, this contemporary kitchen now lends itself to multiple cooks and, most importantly, my clients love their new kitchen! As serious wine collectors, they felt it would be nice to have an area to display and store a few select bottles of wine, although most of the collection is stored elsewhere. While it is usually just the two of them, they enjoy entertaining and have children and family come to visit quite a bit, so space to move about was important. Their style leans toward contemporary, nothing fussy & with very clean lines—they prefer a linear, symmetrical look so the stylized Shaker cabinets were ideal. They prefer natural surfaces, therefore the leathered granite countertops & hardwood flooring were a perfect fit. This kitchen gets great sunlight during the day but was in dire need of light at night. This photo shows the footed, dark cherry center island with dark granite that forms a beautiful contrast with the surrounding white cabinetry and light granite. Another visual focal point of the kitchen is the oil rubbed bronze range hood above the 48" 6-burner Viking range. Oil rubbed bronze cabinet and drawer pulls coordinate with the hood.
