The original condominium was about 40 years old and had no character and was in desperate need of remodeling. The new master bedroom introduced a new fireplace design, rugged stained ceiling beams, and hardwood floors. We also created a new privacy wall entry design within the bedroom. Another new design element included the alcove for the bed wall. The new master bedroom has an old world Spanish Colonial appeal and the sense of being a true retreat.

This dining room gains it's spaciousness not just by the size, but by the pitched beam ceiling ending in solid glass doors; looking out onto the entry veranda. The chandelier is an original Isaac Maxwell from the 1960's. The custom table is made from a live edge walnut slab with polished stainless steel legs. This contemporary piece is complimented by ten old Spanish style dining chairs with brightly colored Designers Guild fabric. An 18th century hutch graces the end of the room with an antique eye of God perched on top. A rare antique Persian rug defines the floor space. The art on the walls is part of a vast collection of original art the clients have collected over the years.

We removed many of the interior walls that partitioned the house into small dark rooms, and opened the living spaces up to each other and to daylight and views. In doing so, we uncovered the big old FIR beams that support the broadly sloped roof, allowing the interior to read as a large open space under a sheltering roof plane as the dominant element – a classic mid-century motif.

The appeal of this Spanish Colonial home starts at the front elevation with clean lines and elegant simplicity and continues to the interior with white-washed walls adorned in old world decor. In true hacienda form, the central focus of this home is the 2-story volume of the Kitchen-Dining-Living rooms. From the moment of arrival, we are treated with an expansive view past the catwalk to the large entertaining space with expansive full height windows at the rear. The wood ceiling beams, hardwood floors, and swooped fireplace walls are reminiscent of old world Spanish or Andalusian architecture. This old 1920's home is thought to be an original George Washington Smith home, has now been updated and extended by Architect Bob Easton of Santa Barbara. Arched walls over stairs, plaster fireplaces, and very simple, comfortable design make for a very livable home for this family with multiple pets. Leather sofas for an easy feel, over antique hand knotted rugs and old world furniture show off this old Spanish home in the Ojai Valley. The Designers used periwinkle colored windows and doors to play off the black iron windows, and real Malibu tile with white marble tile surrounds around a blue granite kitchen island. The living room ceiling is completely original, and is the inspiration for the new exposed beam master suite ceilings. All the lighting is custom wrought iron fixtures, made especially for this home. A powder room features deep blue tiles and Malibu tile wainscot, the paintings are all of simple early California scenes which all make for an earthy, simple old time style, Project Location: Ojai, California.
