This stunning 8,600 sf single-family home gracefully blends contemporary aesthetic with historic architecture. Situated on a tight, urban lot in the bustling Wicker Park neighborhood, the project presented unique challenges associated with constructing a new structure while preserving and renovating the circa 1880’s coach house. Several notable elements: the use of 3 different window systems (including Chicago’s first installation of the “Thermal Evolution Technology” Hopes Windows), a structurally glazed 3-sided glass link seamlessly connecting the new home to the historical coach house, an exterior zinc metal panel system on the rear façade, polished terrazzo flooring, Carlisle Optimistic Stone wide plank flooring on the 2nd floor, and radiant floor heat throughout. February 9th, 2021 marked day one of the first ever virtual Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), which showcases hundreds of new products coming to the design industry in 2021 from brand names ranging from GE to Kohler. While LIVDEN didn’t exhibit at KBIS this year, our sustainable tile was featured at the Café Appliances’ showcase kitchen, Endless Optimist, designed by exhibit designer TK Wismer. The GE brand Café Appliances manufactures custom appliances ranging from brightly colored refrigerators to sleek coffee makers for modern homes. Their trade mark is “Distinct by Design,” and after touring their test kitchens at KBIS, you will see why. Tk featured the playful PUZZLE PIECE series in MINT on our recycled 12x12 Polar Ice Terrazzo as the kitchen backsplash.

The Endless Optimist is an expressive take on a Hamptons-style kitchen. Clean and crisp Café matte white appliances serve as a canvas for creativity, anchoring pops of color and energetic patterns throughout the space. The kitchen is playful with a nod to Parisian chic, à la a Harlequin-style checkered floor, mixed metal accents, a round wooden dining table and butler pantry with arched entry. The room is unapologetic, unexpected, indulgent — a perfect place to reenergize.

These homeowners originally approached us for a dual-bathroom remodel. However, once we sat down with them and went through the discovery process of asking key questions, we uncovered that a kitchen was the priority. Sometimes clients dream bigger than their budgets can afford. Well, actually, they always do, but hey, nothing wrong with being an optimist, right? They wanted a more modern, useful kitchen without a 90's desk, which draws clutter like flies to honey. We redesigned that space specifically for more useful storage and solved their design dilemma regarding different color schemes by offering a 3 tone solution. In the right light, the upper cabinets and lower cabinets have a slightly different shade, the lower being more grey tone. And obviously, the island is a bright blue.
