This young couple in Glendale loved their home and their neighborhood, but with three growing children they felt they were running out of space. They began a list of needs which quickly grew after a couple of years. This list helped them to see how they used their current space, but also helped them identify what was lacking. Their needs list quickly revealed that a two-story addition would be needed to fit all the family’s requirements. With much thought and discussion, a design was created by the Roeser Team in collaboration with Ann Begemann, architect. It was important to the homeowner that the design fit the look of the house. This is always a top priority for Roeser Home Remodeling. We pride ourselves in our finish product appearing as if it had always been there and especially in this remodel, we think we succeeded. On the list of this family’s needs were to have ample storage space for the three children’s school and sporting equipment. A wider entrance hallway from the garage and the backyard provided a unique place to build custom locker spaces, along with a communication station that will close nice and neat when company is expected. Drawer units also give extra storage and allow for a filing system to keep track of all the paper work that comes home. Extra cabinets above the lockers provide much needed additional storage for out of season belongings. A 12 X 24 S140 tile floor laid in a broken joint pattern provides for easy cleaning of this space and keeps dirty shoes or boots from finding its way into the main living quarters. The kitchen was at the top of the priority list for this family as well. The existing kitchen was just too small and narrow and did not allow for an eat-in kitchen, or an adequate workspace for the family. Since the homeowner loves to cook, our Roeser Home Remodeling designer came up with a beautiful design plan that allowed for both. The kitchen was moved to the addition, and the existing kitchen was remodeled with a breakfast nook, housing both a custom bench and a table with chairs, along with a pantry and dry bar. This was the perfect plan and now allows the homeowner to have seating and storage for the family and entertaining. The custom bench was built to match a picture the homeowner had and was custom produced in our own little mill shop. A drawer on both sides of the bench is handy for any extra storage items that the family may need seasonally. The kitchen quickly became a favorite with the Roeser Home Remodeling Team. With the mix of metals and the many extra features in this space, this kitchen is full of interest as well as function. The perimeter cabinets are Wellborn Cabinet’s Premier Line, Charleston maple door style with glacier pewter finish. A Kohler Apron Front smart divide sink adds to the design and function of this beautiful kitchen. A wall mount pot filler hovers above a Wolfe five-burner stove top. The Wellborn hood unit passes the cabinet depth of the upper cabinets and compliments the Wellborn drawer unit underneath. Deeper drawers housed the 36” Wolf, five-burner professional gas stove top and added more storage. The addition of feet to the bottom of the drawer unit along with pushing back the toe kick gives an added detail and look of a furniture piece. Flanking each end of the perimeter of cabinets are high end appliances. The 42” built-in French Door Sub-Zero Refrigerator/Freezer is left of the sink and concealed by Wellborn appliance panels. The Bosch 800 Series Dishwasher next in line is also concealed by a Wellborn appliance panel. However, the 30” Professional Wolf Oven and the 30” M Series Wolf Professional Convection Steam Oven sparkle with their stainless-steel finishes complimenting the Kohler Artifacts pull-down kitchen faucet, the Kohler Artifacts Pot Filler and the Top Knobs Hardware (Normandy Appliance Pulls in Polished Nickel, Button Faced Knob in Polish Nickel and the Tuscany Small D- Pull in Pewter Antique). A 30” Kitchen-Aid electric warming drawer is concealed by a Wellborn Drawer front and Top Knob hardware. The Quartzite counter top in Taj Mahal is always an eye-catching feature for this beautiful kitchen. The large space of the island shows off its remarkable beauty. The island stands on its own with a custom design using Wellborn Cabinets Premier Line, Charleston maple door style in a Pebble Java finish, a darker finish cabinet not only serves as a focal point, but also warms the room against its starker contrast. The island houses a Sharp microwave drawer and its hardware is the same Tuscany small D-Pull as the rest of the kitchen, but in a German Bronze finish to compliment the island’s Hudson Valley Orchard Park light in an Aged Brass Finish. The original half bath was the only bathroom on this floor of the house and the expense to move it was not an option. The location of the bathroom in the middle of the house was problematic. Roeser Home Remodeling solved the problem by creating an opening between the living room and new family room, along with giving the illusion of a small hallway behind the dry bar in the breakfast room. This created a nice space going into the living room and gave the feeling of an open floor plan, providing and a nice private entry to the existing half bath. Updating the bath with wallpaper, a new Barclay- Stanford Pedestal Sink, a new Portsmouth wide-spread faucet in polished nickel, a new Devonshire comfort height toilet, new towel ring, paper holder, lighting and mirror made this cute little powder room a jewel in its own right! The family room was also housed in the addition as a family hang-out place for homework, games and movie watching. Two sets of Sierra Pacific 6’0” X 6’8” aluminum clad wood French Sliding Patio Doors were installed to invite the outdoors in. This allowed for natural lighting and an open spacious feel to the room. A Custom Entertainment Unit built by Roeser Home Remodeling in our mill shop, is the perfect space to house all the family’s television and gaming needs, keeping them neatly stored, but also close at hand. Opposite of the French Doors is the original opening to the backyard. By keeping the opening and installing beautiful glass doors, it opened the flow of the house to the formal living room. By adding the glass doors, it provided a cozy area for quiet adult conversation while keeping an eye on the children as they play or watch TV.

Architect: Andre Tchelistcheff Architects New York. NY Builder: Xhema of Greenwich CT Installer: TRM Enterprises Bridgehampton NY Back story. Northern has worked with both Xhema and TRM many tiles. We have worked with Andre before he branched out on his own. Originally Xhema’s contact was to replace the roof and repair the garage, which as some point had been made into an indoor swimming pool without adequate ventilation. The budget was about $8m and there were 20 drawings. By the time the job was 6 months old the scope of work has expanded to over $30m and over 200 drawings had been produced. Northern was contacted to visit the site and evaluate the existing roof. Although the house had been added to over the years the same tile was used but due to the location of the house the color of the tile varied considerably from the front to the back. Northern identified a large number of custom details which would require us to: 1) Match the existing Field tile in size, thickness (it was actually thicker at the butt and reduced to ½” where the tile is overlapped) , surface texture and the color. 2) Make tiles that are curved in their length to suit the curved rafter on the gabled dormers. 3) Make the curved tiles to suit the low slope octagonal tower. 4) Make the curved tiles and Arris style hips to suit the hipped dormers with the curved rafters. 5) Make the segmented tiles to suit the round turret. 6) Make the custom arris style hip tiles for the octagonal tower. 7) Make the custom Arris style hip to suit the different roof pitches as well as the varying splays at the eaves. 8) Make the custom pieces to suit the swept valleys Simon broke down each section of the roof. He indented all items for each section and agreed the measure etc with the installers. This ‘Project Bible’ became an invaluable tool for the installer, our tile makers and us. We shipped some samples from the original roof to Sahtas who replicated tall the details. I was visiting factory and delayed my return to the Saturday so that the tiles coming out of the kiln late Friday night could be wrapped and packed into newly purchase suit cases. I arrived home late Saturday evening and Simon picked me up Sunday afternoon and drove us down to Greenwich for an 8 am meeting with the clients. When we unpacked the tiles they were still warm and Hilfiger signed off on the color, although his wife suggested we make them a bit darker a ‘as he has a dreadful sense of color!’ We took Vincent Liot, owner of TRM to the factory twice so that he could oversee the prototyping of all the myriad custom pieces. This was an invaluable move as he pre-approved all the pieces before they were shipped. The installation was completed and everyone was very pleased with the final outcome. The Hilfiger’s estate manager told me that a group of friends who were staying the weekend after all the work was completed were heard to ask Mr. Hilfiger ‘I thought you were having a new roof’…to which he responded ‘we did but you can’t tell, which as the plan” …perfect! In refection this is probably the most complicated roof Northern has ever had the pleasure to supply. We learned a lot of very valuable lessons but in future when we are asked how did we do it we will answer ‘that is for us to know and for you to pay for!’

This executive home in the Christchurch Port Hills underwent some major works including the installation of a new kitchen, a new laundry and new media room. Soundproofing was also on the client's wishlist so solutions were found in the installation of new windows and a ventilation system. The exterior cladding and upper level deck and balustratde were also replaced. Internally a new kitchen and laundry room was designed in conjunction with kitchen designer Nicky Claridge. Contrasting black and white handle-free cabinetry was chosen for the kitchen and an engineered oak floor. A white central bench maintains the black and white theme and provides a central entertaining space and the large wallpaper panel behind the clear splashback completes this kitchen's unique look. The laundry was designed to produce an efficient and functional space with maximum storage. The new media room included an overhead projection on to a specially imported screen from the US which linked to the client's computer network to allow for gaming as well as movies. The hallway was also painted and specialty wallpaper was chosen for redecoration of a further 2 rooms in the house. Externally the home was re-clad on the second storey, the existing polystyrene cladding system was removed and replaced with a barrier to provide bracing and sound and air seals. On top of this the large panel James Hardie Oblique board was chosen to give the traditional ship-lap style in keeping with the original building. The decking outside on the upper level balcony was also replaced with a hard wearing and low maintenance synthetic deck material by Outdure. The new balustrade was a bespoke steel to match the traditional look of the building and was manufactured by Christchurch Wrought Iron. All of the windows were replaced on the upper level of the house. Working with the client and the glass supplier Fairview Windows, the aim was to produce a glass configuration that reduced traffic noise as much as possible. The new windows were installed with sound seals to further reduce sound as much as possible. A mechanical ventilation system was also installed to allow the internal environment to be well ventilated without opening the windows and doors, creating a quieter and healthier home. Working with Smith & Sons Christchurch Port Hills to project manage the various renovation works, the client achieved many changes and improvements to their home.

We often show off many of the kitchens and bathrooms our team produces, but we’re capable of a full array of custom carpentry services including woodworking. Take this home for example, built in the early 1900’s with current homeowners that chose to honor the original style of the home. Our father and son team, Josh and Toby, completely sanded, stained and refinished the original mahogany stair treads, then installed new mahogany railings, craftsman-style post, and finished it off with black wrought-iron spindles. The stairs lead up to a 2nd floor library room where we installed rich, dark stained cherry bookshelves including matching crown molding and a stained cherry cover for the cast iron radiators. The finished product maintains the look and feel of the home’s history, but brand new to the homeowners.

The kitchen was a small and cramped c-shape with a narrow door leading into the dining area. The kitchen and dining room were completely opened up, creating a long, galley style, open layout which maximized the space and created a very good flow. Dimensions In Wood worked in conjuction with the client’s architect and contractor to complete this renovation. Custom cabinets were built to use every square inch of the floorplan, with the cabinets extending all the way to the ceiling for the most storage possible. Our woodworkers even created a step stool, staining it to match the kitchen for reaching these high cabinets. The family already had a kitchen table and chairs they were happy with, so we refurbished them to match the kitchen’s new stain and paint color. Crown molding top the cabinet boxes and extends across the ceiling where they create a coffered ceiling, highlighting the beautiful light fixtures centered on a wood medallion. Columns were custom built to provide separation between the different sections of the kitchen, while also providing structural support. Our master craftsmen kept the original 1925 glass cabinet doors, fitted them with modern hardware, repainted and incorporated them into new cabinet boxes. TASK LED Lighting was added to this china cabinet, highlighting the family’s decorative dishes. Appliance Garage On one side of the kitchen we built an appliance garage with doors that slide back into the cabinet, integrated power outlets and door activated lighting. Beside this is a small Galley Workstation for beverage and bar service which has the Galley Bar Kit perfect for sliced limes and more. Baking Cabinet with Pocket Doors On the opposite side, a baking cabinet was built to house a mixer and all the supplies needed for creating confections. Automatic LED lights, triggered by opening the door, create a perfect baker’s workstation. Both pocket doors slide back inside the cabinet for maximum workspace, then close to hide everything, leaving a clean, minimal kitchen devoid of clutter. Super deep, custom drawers feature custom dividers beneath the baking cabinet. Then beneath the appliance garage another deep drawer has custom crafted produce boxes per the customer’s request. Central to the kitchen is a walnut accent island with a granite countertop and a Stainless Steel Galley Workstation and an overhang for seating. Matching bar stools slide out of the way, under the overhang, when not in use. A color matched outlet cover hides power for the island whenever appliances are needed during preparation. The Galley Workstation has several useful attachments like a cutting board, drying rack, colander holder, and more. Integrated into the stone countertops are a drinking water spigot, a soap dispenser, garbage disposal button and the pull out, sprayer integrated faucet. Directly across from the conveniently positioned stainless steel sink is a Bertazzoni Italia stove with 5 burner cooktop. A custom mosaic tile backsplash makes a beautiful focal point. Then, on opposite sides of the stove, columns conceal Rev-a-Shelf pull out towers which are great for storing small items, spices, and more. All outlets on the stone covered walls also sport dual USB outlets for charging mobile devices. Stainless Steel Whirlpool appliances throughout keep a consistent and clean look. The oven has a matching microwave above it which also works as a convection oven. Dual Whirlpool dishwashers can handle all the family’s dirty dishes. The flooring has black, marble tile inlays surrounded by ceramic tile, which are period correct for the age of this home, while still being modern, durable and easy to clean. Finally, just off the kitchen we also remodeled their bar and snack alcove. A small liquor cabinet, with a refrigerator and wine fridge sits opposite a snack bar and wine glass cabinets. Set in Hancock Park, a historic residential enclave in central Los Angeles, the St. Andrews Accessory Dwelling Unit is designed in concert with an addition to the main house. Richly colored, V-groove fiber cement panels provide a visual connection between the new two-story ADU and the existing 1916 craftsman bungalow. Yet, the ADU also expresses contemporary features through its distilled sculptural form. Clean lines and simple geometry emphasize the modern gestures while large windows and pocketing glass doors allow for plenty of natural light and connectivity to the exterior, producing a kind of courtyard in relation to the main home. The compact size required an efficient approach. Downstairs, a kitchenette and living space give definition to an open floor plan. The upper level is reserved for a full bathroom and bedroom with vaulted ceilings. Polished concrete, white oak, and black granite enrich the interiors. A primary suite addition to the main house blends seamlessly with the original. Hallway arches echo the original craftsman interior, connecting the existing living spaces to the lower addition which opens at ground level to the rear yard. Together, the ADU, main house, and a newly constructed patio with a steel trellis create an indoor/outdoor ensemble. Warm and inviting project results from the careful balance of historical and contemporary, minimalist and eclectic.

Large earthenware jar amphora of the Lusitanian type scaled down to a smaller size. These amphorae date back to between the 3rd and 5th century AD, and were originally made in the kilns in the different areas of what is now Portugal, although they may have also been produced in workshops in southern Spain, in Baetica (Andalusia). It is thought that they were distributed mainly in the Eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula but since only small fragments of these amphorae have been found, confirmation is needed to discover whether they could have been used in more areas or whether there are other amphorae with a similar shape produced in other places. There is no evidence proving what they were used for but they are believed to have been used for carrying fish stock and because some pieces have been found with Christian symbols on them like palm leaves, they may also have been used for carrying wine.

By combining aspects of the original kitchen and dining area with new light gray and white paint, updated cabinetry, slate gray stainless steel appliances and custom lighting created this charming Farmhouse/Country design. This project was to create a “virtual art gallery exhibit” featuring all six. Have any of you noticed that a lot of shops and galleries don’t seem to be open these days ;) - well I thought with the help of some online and my open digital assets I might be able to create at least a part of the experience. (Albeit without the wine and cheese snacks) So here is my virtual exhibit. I painted all the originals on 12 x 12 canvas. The “exhibit” would be what 24 x 24 inch framed prints would appear like together. The quality of the images used to produce the prints is high enough to go up to 36 x 36 with good confidence. Framed those are substantial pieces of artwork in either residential or office settings. In the future I’ll try going bigger and share the quality with you. Also what is showing in this virtual setting would be traditional framing and matting over giclee, acrylic sealed or metal prints. The frames for canvas wrap prints would look much better using the floating frame format - especially if you choose the option for having the artwork image “wrap” over the sides. An addition of an entire second story and a portion to the back of the house to accommodate a growing family, for a 4 bedroom 3 bath new house family room and music room. The owners a young couple from central and South America, are movie producers The addition was a challenging one since we had to preserve the existing kitchen from a previous remodel and the old and beautiful original 1901 living room. The stair case was inserted in one of the former bedrooms to access the new second floor. The beam structure shown in the stair case and the master bedroom are indeed the structure of the roof exposed for more drama and higher ceilings.
