This cute cottage, one block from the beach, had not been updated in over 20 years. The homeowners finally decided that it was time to renovate after scrapping the idea of tearing the home down and starting over. Amazingly, they were able to give this house a fresh start with our input. We completed a full kitchen renovation and addition and updated 4 of their bathrooms. We added all new light fixtures, furniture, wallpaper, flooring, window treatments and tile. The mix of metals and wood brings a fresh vibe to the home. One of A Direct's designers, Ted, partnered up with Anne Surchin, Architect on this Southold, NY kitchen renovation. As you can see, the outcome was just beautiful. We love that this kitchen design gives the customer functional, designated working areas. Instead of focusing on the "kitchen triangle," kitchen designers have been focusing on creating functional work zones. With this kitchen, we've done just that! The "cooking zone" has ample counter top space and is completely separate from the "sink/ washing zone." This allows the chef to be interrupted, while others are getting a jump on dishes. On top of a plethora amount of cabinet storage, and two glass display cabinets, this kitchen truly has it all!

The goal of the finished outcome for this basement space was to create several functional areas and keep the lux factor high. The large media room includes a games table in one corner, large Bernhardt sectional sofa, built-in custom shelves with House of Hackney wallpaper, a jib (hidden) door that includes an electric remote controlled fireplace, the original stamped brick wall that was plastered and painted to appear vintage, and plenty of wall moulding. Down the hall you will find a cozy mod-traditional bedroom for guests with its own full bath. The large egress window allows ample light to shine through. Be sure to notice the custom drop ceiling - a highlight of the space. The finished basement also includes a large studio space as well as a workshop. There is approximately 1000sf of functioning space which includes 3 walk-in storage areas and mechanicals room.

Richard Herman is in the hospitality business and owns several upscale hotels in Florida and in other states as well as cattle ranches in both Florida and Missouri. Their farm in Ocala is by farm their most unique. The property serves as a 4-H demonstration project for the purpose of children’s education. They have been working with the Academy Prep of St. Pete which is dedicated to inner-city youths that are selected on the basis of need and achievement. Wife Diane spends her time on the farm raising Gypsy Vanners, a diminutive draft horse named after the job they did in Eastern Europe, pulling the wagons (vans) for gypsies that wandered across the continent. On the Ocala farm, there are several mules with a unique profession. Richard had visited the Hearthstone display at a Log & Timber Home Shows at the Orlando Convention Center many years ago. He was impressed that Hearthstone had stayed in touch with him over the years by mailings, invitations to shows, and periodic phone calls. When the time came to start serious consideration of the design of barn, Hearthstone responded promptly and professionally to Richard and Diane’s requests for information and a review of their ideas for their barn, which would serve as the centerpiece for their new farm. They wanted a multipurpose facility that could accommodate an educational environment and a large hall suitable for the fundraising events for his charities. Richard wanted a barn that reflected the look and feel of barns built at the dawn of the 20th century. Besides the rustic chicken houses and vegetable gardens, they have completely renovated a 1020’s era farmhouse to be as historically correct as possible and serves as the entry to the farm. “They very careful to feel us out, get comfortable with our capabilities, and be convinced that we could perform as promised,” said Project Manager John Ricketson of Hearthstone. Design Process There were some initial drawings that gave us a start on the basic shape and size of the barn. From there, it was a process of narrowing down the uses of each area and the spans that could be achieved. The barn was going to have the traditional “board & batten” exterior siding and a metal roof. There is a cantilevered ‘hay hood” on the north gable end above the large sliding barn doors that open into the foyer and horse stalls. The wings house a combination of areas, beginning with the large restrooms to accommodate crowds for events. Other parts of the wings have garage areas for the farm vehicles, feed room, tack room, wash rack, storage, offices, and smaller restrooms. Keeping with the look and feel of the turn of the century, Hearthstone developed a process for giving the timbers a surface texture that mimicked the circular cuts of timbers that had just come out of an old sawmill. This was easier said than done. Randy Giles guided his millwright (Wolfgang) in designing a machine that would do this effectively. The barn was delivered in October of 2014 and was erected over the course of two weeks, thanks to a hardworking crew (Eric Foster) and near-perfect weather. After the Hearthstone crew completed the erection and roof dry-in, it was time for the local carpenters to step up and install some light conventional framing on the gable ends before applying the roof fascia and exterior board & batten siding. Next came the big sliding barn doors, plumbing, electrical, heating, and cooling. Large rustic fixtures were hung from the great hall roof timbers. Exterior The board & batten siding was cypress and allowed to turn color naturally as rain hit it and the sun started working on it with UV rays. This method causes a much grayer look closer to the ground and less so where the roof overhang provides protection. The North end has some large limestone boulders and planters arranged around the pad with tall pampas grass. The planters provide casual seating before events and during outside receptions. The entire area was sodded with lush St. Augustine grass and split rail fences were added to enclose the barn area. The corrugated metal roof was a special order material that immediately rusted after being exposed to moisture. The layer of rust protects the metal from the elements. Interior The board & batten theme was carried throughout most of the interior with the timbers left natural to show off the circular saw texture. All of the tongue & groove decking was shipped in advance to allow the local painter to pre-stain it with a dark brown transparent stain that is a beautiful background to the light color Eastern White Pine timbers. “Everything was unique in this project” said Project Manager John Ricketson. “The setting on a small demonstration farm close to Ocala, the multipurpose design, the circular saw texture on the timbers.” The Hermans are very proud of their farm’s outcome. Richard sent a note to Randy Giles, owner of Hearthstone: “The Barn is fantastic, not a single problem, period. Next month, we have Jo Dee Messina coming in to help with a fundraiser for a local center for abused kids. Folks love the farm, ...... but that barn gets all of the attention. I would encourage you to use me as a reference for your sales team, feel free to extend my cell phone to any prospective purchasers.”

What a fun project and what a beautiful home! This young growing family wanted high quality new cabinets throughout their new-build in Hinkley, MN. They had six spaces in the home that needed cabinetry and enlisted us here at The Cabinet Store to help! Not only did we help them with the design (much of it done efficiently long distance), but we were able to install all six rooms in one day! The homeowners wanted a transitional interior style for their home, a mix of modern and traditional. They wanted the overall look to be clean, contemporary, and warm. A mix of wood and painted cabinetry was the perfect fit to give off this polished, but cozy feel throughout the home. Selecting Showplace Wood’s Breckenridge door style throughout the whole home, and alternating the color tones (Soft Cream with Walnut glaze for some rooms and Cherry wood stained Coffee in other rooms), they got just what they wanted. Plus we custom made matching pieces for various rooms in our very own custom cabinetry shop to match the Showplace cabinets! This week we’re going to feature photos of the kitchen cabinetry & the living room shelving / entertainment center. See the fabulous outcome below! The kitchen features a fun mix of the cream color cabinets on the top and bottom of the outer edges and the coffee toned ones on the island. And the entertainment center / shelving shown in the living room was custom made here at The Cabinet Store to match the cabinets of the kitchen island. Practical and beautiful!

Carmichael Ave: Custom Modern Home Build We’re excited to finally share pictures of one of our favourite customer’s project. The Rahimi brothers came into our showroom and consulted with Jodi for their custom home build. At Castle Kitchens, we are able to help all customers including builders with meeting their budget and providing them with great designs for their end customer. We worked closely with the builder duo by looking after their project from design to installation. The final outcome was a design that ensured the best layout, balance, proportion, symmetry, designed to suit the style of the property. Our kitchen design team was a great resource for our customers with regard to mechanical and electrical input, colours, appliance selection, accessory suggestions, etc. We provide overall design services! The project features walnut accents all throughout the house that help add warmth into a modern space allowing it be welcoming. Castle Kitchens was ultimately able to provide great design at great value to allow for a great return on the builders project. A family of five, who live in a prestigious McLean neighborhood, was looking to renovate and upgrade their 20 year old kitchen. She was tired of the bleached look on her kitchen, and now was looking for light but updated look at her kitchen. She also did not want to deal with having a cook top in her Island and wanted professional appliances and better traffic pattern. Challenges: The bulkheads were stuffed with lots of duct work and plumbing. All need to be relocated in order to take advantage of the height. The kitchen was over a very tight crawl space area that made access to run gas line, and plumbing line much more challenging. Adjacent family room needed to become part of this grand plan and as part of the oval scheme of work tie into kitchen cabinetry. Design Solutions: The plan was to give a French country look to this kitchen, by carrying the overall soft and creamy color scheme of main floor furniture in the new kitchen. The back wall of the kitchen now occupied by 48” professional range under a custom wood hood. New tower style refrigerator covered in matching wood panels is placed at the end of the run, just create more work space on both sides of the stove. New plumbing was run for prep. Sink in the new island in order to have a second cook can work in the kitchen. The large contrasting Island in a Dark chocolate finish now offers a second dishwasher, a beverage center and built in microwave. Also serves as a large buffet style counter space and accommodate up to five seats around it. Smart use of detailed crown and trim molding are highlights of this kitchen. Just to the west of this kitchen, we used to have a bare was with a 36” fireplace in it. Our goal was to get all surrounding walls involved with this renovation. Now the entirety of this wall in filled with lower cabinetry and upper display cabinetry and a working station at the end of the run. The fireplace was wrapped with matching color mantel and got equipped for a new large TV above it New cabinetry was added to butler area to harmonize with new kitchen. We have introduced a large size porcelain tile floor for entire family room and kitchen just to give it bigger space look and easy upon the traffic pattern. Outcome: The rare exotic counter top stone was the most favorite item in this kitchen for the homeowner. The way it connects with a brown glazing of the cabinetry and compliments the stone backsplash tile with an interesting picture frame inset niche above stove area is breathtaking. She is thrilled with the end result and cannot wait to celebrate her son’s engagement party in her new and exciting kitchen.

The couple selected white IKEA RINGHULT wall cabinets and IKEA VOXTORP base cabinets in Walnut to go along with IKEA SEKTION cabinetry hardware, which really added warmth to the contemporary look. This warmth was carried through with floating shelves in Walnut from Semihandmade and custom Caesarstone White Marble Frosty Carrina countertops bought at IKEA and accented with IKEA OMLOPP LED lights. “Our budget was $8,500 and the project came in at $10,500 with a new deep sink, chef’s faucet and heavy-duty garbage disposal. [By researching on design sites] we were able to see images that allowed us to blend styles we liked and we’re very happy with the outcome,” she concludes.

This Primary bathroom needed an update to be a forever space, with clean lines, and a timeless look. Now my clients can simply walk into the shower space, for easy access, easy maintenance, and plenty of room. An American Standard step in tub is opposite the shower, which was on their wish list. The outcome is a lovely, relaxing space that they will enjoy for years to come. We decided to mix brushed gold finishes with matte black fixtures. The geometric Herringbone and Hex porcelain tile selections add interest to the overall design.
