This award-winning and intimate cottage was rebuilt on the site of a deteriorating outbuilding. Doubling as a custom jewelry studio and guest retreat, the cottage’s timeless design was inspired by old National Parks rough-stone shelters that the owners had fallen in love with. A single living space boasts custom built-ins for jewelry work, a Murphy bed for overnight guests, and a stone fireplace for warmth and relaxation. A cozy loft nestles behind rustic timber trusses above. Expansive sliding glass doors open to an outdoor living terrace overlooking a serene wooded meadow.

Mid-sized farmhouse guest light wood floor and brown floor bedroom photo in Milwaukee with red walls and no fireplace
Mid-sized farmhouse guest light wood floor and brown floor bedroom photo in Milwaukee with red walls and no fireplace

Designed by Tim Higbee of Closet Works:
The Murphy style wall bed folds out into a queen size bed with a comfortable 8 inch thick quality mattress. A pull-out table on the right side bed is perfect when guests stay overnight, but folds away into the wall unit when the room is used as an office. Built-in interior lighting above the wall bed is perfect for reading in bed and the switch is conveniently located on the left side of the head of the bed. When the wall bed is open, the lighted, recessed well that holds the bed when it is closed creates a visual separation from the wall storage unit, framing the top of the mattress like a custom headboard.
The Aria wood tone blends in with the color scheme in the rest of the home.

A home remodel allowed for a new hall bathroom including a window. Marble was used throughout on heated floors, shower walls and baseboard detail. Shades of blue unify the space including the strie wallpaper. The pull-out laundry hamper was an ask from the client to help keep dirty items off the bathroom floor.

Ship-lap walls and sliding barn doors add a rustic flair to the kid-friendly recreational space.

A couple with an affinity for Asian and contemporary themes needed a new guest bathroom for visiting family and overnight guests. With extended visits from their parents and other family members in mind, the couple wanted a design that more that one person could comfortably share. The existing bathroom was dark, dated and fussy and did little to reflect the personality of its owners. The couple wanted to express their penchant for clean, Asian-inspired design in the new guest bathroom and bring renewed energy and functionality to the space.
A sense of simple, light-filled luxury was created in the guest bathroom by harmonizing tranquil colors, the visuals of flowing waterfalls, and the serenity of clean, Asian-inspired lines. An innovative Shoji screen-style door opens in three widths for varying degrees of privacy. This peaceful oasis now communicates the clients’ passion for Asian themes while providing their guests with a calm, private space for relaxation and reinvigoration.

This thoughtfully designed guest bedroom blends coastal comfort with timeless style. A soft neutral foundation is layered with deep navy textiles, custom pillows in botanical prints, and a sculptural area rug that adds organic texture underfoot. The upholstered bed frame features wood accents that echo the home’s custom millwork, while blackout-lined drapery and a modern ceiling fan ensure both comfort and functionality. Framed artwork with personal significance gives this serene space a collected, welcoming feel for overnight guests.

This Brookline remodel took a very compartmentalized floor plan with hallway, separate living room, dining room, kitchen, and 3-season porch, and transformed it into one open living space with cathedral ceilings and lots of light.

How do you solve housing overnight guests in a small apartment?
A bedroom that dissolves open. Two oversized pocket doors turn the living room into a bedroom. A cozy room
without dedicating precious square footage to occasional guests. We leveled the floors of this landmark Brooklyn condo to ensure the doors would slide effortlessly.
