Living room library - rustic open concept medium tone wood floor living room library idea in Denver with white walls, a standard fireplace and a brick fireplace

Upon entering the penthouse the light and dark contrast continues. The exposed ceiling structure is stained to mimic the 1st floor's "tarred" ceiling. The reclaimed fir plank floor is painted a light vanilla cream. And, the hand plastered concrete fireplace is the visual anchor that all the rooms radiate off of. Tucked behind the fireplace is an intimate library space. Photo by Lincoln Barber

A dramatic transformation in an early 20th century home brought into the new millennium by a young and eclectic owner. A new fireplace adds to the warmth and ambiance to a space filled with warm spice colors and African pieces collected through many travels. The clean face gas burning unit is the Bayport model from Kozy Heat finished with a Beveled front in Rust. The brick is new to the home and is painted white to limit the rustic feel but still maintain it's classic look. A slate hearth and a reclaimed wood mantel from a 100 year old barn compliment the design and anchor the design in tradition.

The room was to narrow to photograph in its entirety so I made three images across the top and three images across the bottom of the scene and stitched these together in Autopano Giga. Copyright Carl Mayfield Photography

Period rooms don't need to be painted with "traditional" colours. So forget whites and creams and try more distinctive colours. High ceilings can carry modern, bold colours. Accessories can really complete the look, copper vases set this room off beautifully. Wall colours Stepping Stone, available in Matt or Mid Sheen Breatheasy emulsion and Royal Ocean available in any finish from Crown Colourmix.

The homeowners wanted to open up their living and kitchen area to create a more open plan. We relocated doors and tore open a wall to make that happen. New cabinetry and floors where installed and the ceiling and fireplace where painted. This home now functions the way it should for this young family!

Luxurious modern sanctuary, remodeled 1957 mid-century architectural home is located in the hills just off the Famous Sunset Strip. The living area has 2 separate sitting areas that adorn a large stone fireplace while looking over a stunning view of the city. I wanted to keep the original footprint of the house and some of the existing furniture. With the magic of fabric, rugs, accessories and upholstery this property was transformed into a new modern property.
