Inspiration for a contemporary kitchen remodel in Boston

What an honor it was to be part of this Classic California Ranch remodel! Originally built in 1940 with the architectural influence of the iconic William Wurster, this beautiful home had a small, dated kitchen that didn't do it justice. The floor plan had become rather compartmentalized due to remodels and additions by the previous homeowners, and the current homeowners wanted to thoughtfully re-design the kitchen paying tribute to its roots, while also gaining more open and functional space. Ultimately, we relocated the kitchen from it's original location to what was an informal dining space. We reconfigured the mud/laundry room, as well as the space adjacent to it and the kitchen, to allow for a more natural flow between kitchen, dining, and living. The space that previously housed the kitchen was turned into a gallery, where the homeowners can sit and enjoy their morning coffee while viewing the golf course. In the gallery, the original brick from the exterior patio was uncovered under many layers of flooring, and the contractor was able to restore the brick and re-install it for the gallery floor, creating a space that truly emphasizes the leisurely, laid back California lifestyle that blends the indoor and outdoor spaces that the architecture of William Wurster so beautifully emphasizes.

Having worked with Riverside before on two previous home remodeling projects, this Lafayette couple came back a third time to renovate their master bathroom—paying us the highest compliment. While the overall layout of the master bathroom still worked for this couple, they were looking to improve the utility of their space by replacing an unused bathtub with a spa-inspired glass-enclosed shower. Also important was updating the dated materials to reflect a more current style that made them feel good. Design decisions started with painting the stark purple walls a ‘Mindful Gray’ by Sherwin Williams. Next, our clients chose a furniture-inspired dual vanity topped with a ‘Colonial White’ granite countertop. The zero-entry, glass enclosed shower features an elegant stainless steel linear drain, Delta dual shower heads, a purposeful shower niche, and Emser pebble tile floors. An added bonus: Corner space left from the removal of the tiny original shower was converted into a convenient linen closet for additional storage.

The purpose of this project was to renovate and reconfigure a 1920’s nine-bedroom home, making changes tailored to the new owner’s family and needs. Our clients could see the potential in this spacious home and purchased it intending to renovate and upgrade prior to moving in. Although the kitchen had been modernized, it was small. The rest of the home echoed its once elegant stature, but it felt dated, neglected, and designed for a different time. Working closely with the clients, we developed a design and scope of work that would expand the kitchen, update all of the 4.5 vintage bathrooms, completely transform the layout of the master suite, and eliminate 2 bedrooms on the third floor, which had been left untouched since its original days functioning as servants’ quarters, and reimagine it as a game and multimedia space. Finally, while the façade of the home was nice, it failed to effectively communicate the same message as the interior of the home. The new owners were looking for a more stately daily greeting.
