Inspiration for a mid-sized contemporary partial sun backyard brick landscaping in Orange County.

This large side yard in the Lakeshore Historic District was redeveloped into a natural woodland clearing. Stormwater from the roof has been directed through a steel runnel into a native rain garden where it replenishes the cistern for a bubbling stone fountain. Weathered concrete slabs act as a thread from a firepit seating area, across the rain garden to the rear yard. Permeable paving in the driveway allows water to drain into the soil slowly. This takes stress off sewer and storm drainage systems. Specially designed concrete pavers with gaps let the water flow through to the underlying gravel. The gravel — which has no fine particles — provides a place for beneficial microbes that help clean the runoff water. Pollutants are filtered out before they reach streams and Puget Sound.

Replicating the feel of New Zealand’s Blanket Bay Resort was achieved through the thoughtful selection of hardscape materials: large bluestone pavers for the expansive terrace, as well as impressive granite boulders, outcropping stones, and steps.

10,000 sf driveway paved with Historic European Cobblestone, authentic reclaimed GRANITE cobble imported from Europe. (In these photos, snow and wet conditions affect appearance.) Client selected the 5" x 5" granite cobble, sawn at 2" for installation over a driveway heating system.

Design ideas for a rustic landscaping in Orange County.

Large windows at the back of the home allow abundant day-lighting, while the large overhang provides some shade and shelter from the elements . The clear cedar deck and the crisp bleacher-style stairs are beautiful as well as functional. The streamlined, galvanized bar stock railing system with stainless steel cables is sturdy, yet "invisible", allowing the owners to enjoy an unobstructed view. Permeable paving provides a walkway to the front of the home.
