A full interior renovation of a ranch home in Parker's Black Bear Golf Club, including a complete finish of the previously unfinished basement level.
On the main level, the kitchen was reworked around a large waterfall-edge quartz island and a dimensional three-dimensional stone backsplash that catches light differently through the day. The great room was rebuilt as the anchor of the floor plan: a full-height tiled fireplace surround flanked by walnut floating shelves and painted base cabinetry, with a linear firebox set beneath a solid walnut mantel. New wide-plank flooring runs continuously across the entire main level, tying the dining room, kitchen, great room, and entry into one uninterrupted plane.
Smaller rooms got the same attention as the large ones. The powder bath pairs a walnut vanity with a quartz deck and matte black fittings. The laundry was rebuilt with full quartz counters, a stainless undermount sink, and a run of upper cabinetry — a working room, not an afterthought.
Downstairs, roughly 2,217 square feet of unfinished basement became a full secondary living level: an open recreation area with its own linear fireplace, a wet bar with beverage refrigeration and a stacked tile feature wall, a guest suite with a second fireplace wall, and a full bath. The work included framing, mechanical and electrical distribution, egress compliance, and finish carpentry, permitted and inspected through Town of Parker.
Two levels, one continuous finish schedule, one crew.

A handy, empty-nester couple, nearing retirement, sold their mansion, and purchased a fixer-upper on a sunlit hillside that features the spectacular ocean view of the Channel Islands. ENRarchitects was hired to assist with making minor enhancements to the plan, integrating the lower level parking court, and adding a patio deck. The owner, a retiring engineer, took on the responsibilities of general contracting during construction.
Our collaboration included opening the kitchen to the Living-Dining space, so all can enjoy the ocean view. A balcony was added to second floor Master Study, with a new laundry room below it. Both bathrooms were modestly enlarged to provide more spacious showers. Lastly, the Entry Foyer was opened to ceiling height into the Living Room.
In California, ocean views inherently include relentless west sunshine, and formidable interior heat gain. Multiple design studies explored various means to incorporate shading and solar screening measures to permit the view, and to reduce heat gain. Additional studies featured more substantial proposed additions, including a lower level guest suite, and a detached office.
A key feature, is the addition of a raised, covered entry porch, where passengers and goods can be offloaded, prior to parking on the lower level. The new porch also provides a secondary transition around the structure to the ocean view, split-level patio.
A 2nd phase included the suggestion of rebuilding the lower covered parking to include a roof deck, rooftop guest suite, and solar electricity, which was successfully completed. The property is now mildly reminiscent of the Sea Ranch community.
With the blessing of year-round comfortable weather, and ever-changing, dynamic views, the successfully remodeled home takes full advantage for a new generation of colorful living. (photo by owner)

Tucked into a hillside in the west hills outside Portland, Oregon, this house blends interior and exterior living.
With a beautiful, hilltop site, our design approach was to take advantage of the natural surroundings and views over the landscape, while keeping the architecture from dominating the site. We semi-submerged the main floor of the house while carving outdoor living areas into the hillside. This protected courtyard extends out from the interior living spaces to provide year-round access to the outdoors.
Large windows and sliding glass doors reinforce the connection to nature, while a large, open, great room contains the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The home is a single story design with two wings. One wing contains the master bedroom with en-suite bath & laundry. Another wing includes 2 additional bed/bathrooms, with one bed/bath pair able to function as a private guest suite.
The exterior materials include Shou Sugi Ban rainscreen siding, floor to ceiling windows, and a standing seam metal roof. The interior design includes polished concrete floors, a fireplace flanked by accent walls of natural wood, natural wood veneer casework, tile and plaster bathrooms. The landscape design includes a variety of water features, native plantings and permeable pavings in the courtyard. The retaining walls of the courtyard are a combination of concrete and stone gabion walls.
