This full yard remodel was designed to enhance both function and curb appeal. Custom patina metal planters were installed in the backyard and front yard to add visual interest and a modern, timeless touch. Faux turf was incorporated to replace high-traffic areas and eliminate persistent muddy spots, creating a clean and low-maintenance landscape solution. Special care was taken to preserve existing mature trees, with custom turf cutouts around established trunks to allow for proper growth and drainage. The result is a cohesive, pet-friendly outdoor space that stays green year-round while maintaining the natural character of the property.

Awarded by the Classical institute of art and architecture , the linnean house has a restrained and simple elevation of doors and windows. Nestled in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Washington, D.C., the Linnean House is classical in both plan and elevation throughout its award-winning house plans. The main mass, comprising of the most formal and public spaces, is a spatial triptych along a symmetrical main axis. Inside the luxury home, the limestone façade, simple but well-proportioned with classical elements, extends itself into both the entry portico and main foyer with consistent proportions and materiality. This introduction allows the flanking living and dining rooms to be perceived as separate pavilions, each equipped with eight equal-proportioned French doors symmetrical of the main axis. Beyond the classical spaces are two wings which lead to the master suite and a kitchen/family space, respectively. Both of which are situated to queue from the French door axis, a focal feature in the repeatedly published home design. At the entry foyer, the stark stone luxury architecture is warmed by two symmetrical wood armoire-like freestanding sculptural objects, a persistent theme throughout the luxury house. In the kitchen, for instance, stand four similar wood armoire objects at opposite corners that act as columns and help give this space a sense of boundary and enclosure. The master bath vanity, in similar fashion, is introduced as a central free-standing form anchoring itself as a notable presence in the space. Lastly, the wine room is designed as a series of free-standing heavy wood cavity walls spanned only by a hint of glass.

The family of a local firefighter purchased a raw 15.7 acre ranch in the woody, rolling hills of Thousand Oaks to build their 4ksf, 1-story home with a view of the valley to the NE beyond. The husband and wife team, with an abundance of energy and fortitude, tackled every hurdle with optimistic determination and persistence, including the myriad of agency regulations, construction supervision, and material selections & purchases. They came to ENRarchitects with a developed seed of an idea and a manila file full of handmade sketches. Together we continuously refined the ideas and produced the final design, documents and engineering to obtain timely permits and competitive bids from subcontractors and suppliers. The owner’s diligence in research and negotiation paid off significantly in a completed budget that was less than half the typical general contracting rate. The welcoming home, features 4 bedrooms, 3-1/4 baths, kitchen, laundry & pantry, living, dining & family rooms, office, and a 3-car garage with a stall for the speedboat. With the latest in high-density insulation, foil-backed roof sheathing, energy efficient windows, the energy usage is very low, especially considering a whole house fan keeps the usage of the A/C system to a minimum, and a pellet-burning iron stove supplements the furnace. The result is a beautiful oasis, perched in the hills, with ever-changing views in every direction.

This Louisville home in the Boulder Area had old, cracked and warping cedar siding on it. The homeowners were struggling to maintain it and had a persistent problem with woodpeckers. They like the look of natural wood but wanted something that would outlast their time in the home and would allow for minimal upkeep. We suggested a unique product that we love, which happens to meet both of these requirements: James Hardie siding from WoodTone RusticSeries. This product is a James Hardie lap siding product that has a factory finish from a third-party finishing company, WoodTone. The base product, James Hardie HardiePlank lap siding, has a 30-year warranty. WoodTone's process for finishing this product gives it the look of stained wood with the benefit of a 15-year finish warranty. The homeowner selected the color Costal Gray for the body and James Hardie's Arctic White for the trim. We also installed James Hardie ColorPlus fascia and vented soffits in the color Arctic White. How do you think it turned out?

Set on a narrow hillside lot overlooking the San Francisco Bay in Point Richmond, California, Bay Heirloom is a Mid-Century Modern family home restored, modernized and adapted for contemporary living. Oriented south-southwest toward the Marin Headlands, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the residence captures shifting Bay light throughout the day, from fog-muted mornings to vivid, glowing sunsets. The home was built by Karlyn Neel’s grandfather, the owner of the construction company Flo-Crete, one of the Bay Area’s early concrete pumping firms. Flo-Crete completed the foundation and structural concrete work, with family photographs documenting the original cinderblock walls and pours. The firm also contributed to major regional infrastructure projects, including the Transbay BART tube and Candlestick Park, situating the house within a broader legacy of Bay Area construction. Growing up, Neel spent considerable time in the home, developing an early appreciation for mid-century modern principles. Instead of parting with this family heirloom, she purchased the home from her grandfather’s estate. While her grandfather continued to live in the Point Richmond house, Neel purchased a Mid-Century Modern residence in Palm Desert. In contrast to the Bay Area’s cool temperatures, salt air, and persistent winds, the desert home is shaped by heat and sun and requires a different material response. A substantial renovation she led there emphasized thermal performance, filtered light, and restrained detailing. The experience later informed the restoration of her Bay Area family home. What began as a modest Mid-Century Modern update expanded when decades of exposure to marine conditions revealed leaks and significant structural and seismic deficiencies. Neel was determined to honor her grandfather’s perseverance and without hesitation pivoted to a much more intensive project. Addressing these challenges required close coordination between Neel, Klopf Architecture and Kasten Builders, with architectural restraint and construction precision guiding each intervention. Rather than alter the home’s defining features, the project focused on reinforcing the structure from within. Discreet beams were embedded along the rear facade and in an upstairs wall, strengthening the building while maximizing the wall of glass facing the Bay and opening the wall between the kitchen and the living space. These structural interventions allowed the space to open fully to the Bay without visual interruption, with the kitchen repositioned as the social and functional core of an open, continuous living space. The building envelope was updated using weather- and corrosion-resistant materials appropriate to the marine environment. The house unfolds vertically from the street, beginning with a modest garage level and workshop, with the main living spaces located below. Original slate flooring at the entry was preserved, along with select furnishings and artwork collected by Neel’s grandfather, anchoring the restored interior in its past. A restrained palette of black accents and pale, natural finishes replaces darker wood tones, reinforcing openness and calm. A naturally illuminated stair connects to the lowest level, where a former basement was transformed into a guest suite and family room opening onto a deck. From there, steps lead directly to a small concrete boat ramp at the water’s edge. Throughout the project, decisions were guided by continuity rather than transformation for its own sake. Lessons drawn from both desert and coastal climates informed a material strategy rooted in performance and restraint. Bay Heirloom stands as a measured evolution of a family house, structurally renewed and carefully modernized, grounded in the discipline and care that first shaped it. Beauty is what a person admires whether it is in your own house or out on the streets. Glass tiles are one of the best ways to induce beauty in your homes. Provide any room a border or a whole art with Subway tiles. With kids in your house things tend to get dirty. Paints are splashed and dirt is brought in but you cannot just stop them from enjoying these best moments of their life. Now can you? No of course not. That would be so unfair. Woodpecker proof siding is what these homeowners in Eden Prairie Minnesota wanted. These homeowner recently tackled a remodeling project that turned a frustrating situation into a stunning transformation. The main catalyst for the upgrade? Persistent woodpecker damage to the home’s existing cedar siding. After years of dealing with the unsightly holes and constant repairs, the homeowners decided to make a lasting change, opting for durable and aesthetically pleasing materials that would stand up to the elements — and the local wildlife. In addition to the siding, the project included the replacement of the windows with Marvin fiberglass windows in black. The sleek black frames created a striking contrast against the Iron Gray siding, adding a contemporary touch while improving energy efficiency and overall durability. A standout feature of the remodel was the entryway, which received special attention with the installation of thermally modified wood siding. This unique material, known for its enhanced stability and rich appearance, really set off the entryway, creating a warm and welcoming focal point that contrasted beautifully with the cool tones of the Iron Gray siding. The homeowners in Eden Prairie now have a home that is not only protected from woodpecker damage but also showcases modern design elements and materials that will last for years to come.
