This 10 person custom dining table absolutely made me fall in love with building more traditional style pieces of furniture. While components of this nod to some contemporary style, the beading, trim work and lion's head are all traditional in nature. The coloring of the mahogany falls in a few different shades over the beading details which gives the piece so much depth. The beading around the curves of the legs is by far my favorite detail. Likely because it was the most challenging part so I grew to really appreciate it. As your eye moves from the bright white quartz table top with the lovely double ogee profile, the brass lion head and feet create a nice contrast and pop. This piece of furniture was hand made in San Diego, California.

Inspiration for a country kitchen remodel in San Francisco

Two vanities, a double shower, and a double whirlpool in this master bath replace two separate small his-and-hers bathrooms. The vanity tops are slab granite and the shower enclosure and tub deck/surround are fabricated of matching thin granite panels. Photography by Ehlen Creative.

I built this on my property for my aging father who has some health issues. Handicap accessibility was a factor in design. His dream has always been to try retire to a cabin in the woods. This is what he got. It is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath with a great room. It is 600 sqft of AC space. The footprint is 40' x 26' overall. The site was the former home of our pig pen. I only had to take 1 tree to make this work and I planted 3 in its place. The axis is set from root ball to root ball. The rear center is aligned with mean sunset and is visible across a wetland. The goal was to make the home feel like it was floating in the palms. The geometry had to simple and I didn't want it feeling heavy on the land so I cantilevered the structure beyond exposed foundation walls. My barn is nearby and it features old 1950's "S" corrugated metal panel walls. I used the same panel profile for my siding. I ran it vertical to match the barn, but also to balance the length of the structure and stretch the high point into the canopy, visually. The wood is all Southern Yellow Pine. This material came from clearing at the Babcock Ranch Development site. I ran it through the structure, end to end and horizontally, to create a seamless feel and to stretch the space. It worked. It feels MUCH bigger than it is. I milled the material to specific sizes in specific areas to create precise alignments. Floor starters align with base. Wall tops adjoin ceiling starters to create the illusion of a seamless board. All light fixtures, HVAC supports, cabinets, switches, outlets, are set specifically to wood joints. The front and rear porch wood has three different milling profiles so the hypotenuse on the ceilings, align with the walls, and yield an aligned deck board below. Yes, I over did it. It is spectacular in its detailing. That's the benefit of small spaces. Concrete counters and IKEA cabinets round out the conversation. For those who cannot live tiny, I offer the Tiny-ish House. As the original plan started to take shape, some water damage provided the impetus to remodel a small upstairs hall bath. Once this bath was complete, the homeowners enjoyed the result so much that they decided to set aside the kitchen and complete a large master bath remodel. Once that was completed, we started planning for the kitchen! The original kitchen was just large enough to accommodate an island and a separate pantry but felt a little cramped, especially during the weekends when the couple likes to entertain. The primary goal was to maintain the functionality of the current space, but to add some breathing room as well as to provide a view to the homeowner’s side yard and substantial Hosta garden. The solution was to bump out the space about 10 feet which provided ample room for large pro appliances, a large island for gathering and an upgraded pantry space. It was important to the homeowners to create a space that felt like it belonged in their historic 1866 home. Details such as matching new trim to the existing large custom profiles in the original home and re-purposing an existing door to be used for the new pantry, provided these touches. A large window at the main sink provides that view into the yard and a beautiful focal point for the room. A mix of painted wood and stained cabinetry gives the new kitchen a sense of belonging in the older home, as do the Super White quartzite that has the look of marble, subway tile backsplash, polished nickel lanterns and glass and mirrored doors. The large pantry, filled with custom shelving built to the homeowner’s specifications, stainless steel appliances and the two Galley Workstations – sinks that do double duty as prep space – ensure that not only does the kitchen look great, but also functions in a personalized manner that works perfectly for the occupants. Doing the bump out also allowed the opportunity for a small mudroom and powder room right off the kitchen as well as re-arranging some openings to allow for better traffic flow throughout the entire first floor. The result is a comfortable up-to-date home that feels both steeped in history yet allows for today’s style of living. This modern teenage boy's room is the perfect picture of his personality. His love of music is evident by the guitars and record player that are proudly displayed. Our design team took this vision further by incorporating a modern upholstered king-sized wall bed, guitar artwork, geometric linens and sleek hanging pendants on each side of the bed. A swivel chair in the corner provides a comfortable spot for him to play the guitar and to swivel to face the mountain views if he wishes. A modern desk and computer on the opposite side of the room (not pictured) allow a spot for gaming or for completing homework. Washable linens and a soft textured rug complete the room. The adjoining on-suite bathroom features gray textured tile and acrylic guitar artwork to complete the music themed suite.
