Sitting in one of Capital Hill’s beautiful neighborhoods, the exterior of this residence portrays a bungalow style home as from the Arts and Craft era. By adding a large dormer to east side of the house, the street appeal was maintained which allowed for a large master suite to be added to the second floor. As a result, the two guest bedrooms and bathroom were relocated to give to master suite the space it needs. Although much renovation was done to the Federalist interior, the original charm was kept by continuing the formal molding and other architectural details throughout the house. In addition to opening up the stair to the entry and floor above, the sense of gained space was furthered by opening up the kitchen to the dining room and remodeling the space to provide updated finishes and appliances as well as custom cabinetry and a hutch. The main level also features an added powder room with a beautiful black walnut vanity.

Nestled in a Redwood forest, the house on Upper Moonraker is a cook's paradise with homage paid to the owners' love of crafts and exquisite home-carved wooden ducks. Sea Ranch Architect David Moulton AIA designed a hefty, hand-milled walnut island set over custom made cherry cabinets as the initial kitchen focal point. A mighty Wolf stove framed in stainless steel shelving provides the framework for power cooking and the owner's collection of bright red Le Creuset pots and pans. Wild Rice Ceasarstone countertops are a sleek but soft complement to a Rolf sink both wide and deep enough to accommodate large pots and pans and a Blanco pull-down faucet provides for easy clean up of freshly-picked garden vegetables. Adding to the ambiance of real cookery, a wrap-around wall-sized blackboard with stainless shelving provides the perfect place to keep track of often-used recipes, favorite spices, utensils, pots and pans. searanchimages.com

The prime location of this home coupled with the fact that the Clients parents had owned the same provided the incentive to undertake a whole house remodel. A portion of the existing oversized utility room was incorporated into the kitchen space to provide the necessary footprint for the new kitchen. A beautiful hand picked granite slab provides the movement on the eating bar that draws ones eyes to the cooktop and the work surfaces beyond. The small eating peninsula satisfies the needs of these empty nesters while allowing them to look out through their new patio doors into their backyard and the creek that lies at its edge. Dark mahogany stained superior alder provides the traditional richness in cabinet appearance requested by the owner.

Extensive storage and counter space help make laundry chores easier in this multi-purpose laundry room. Front-loading, side-by-side washer and dryer are state-of-the-art. For a personal touch, I framed my client's treasured collection of Norman Rockwell plates and displayed them around the window. The red-edged tile picks up the red accents throughout the room. By shortening a window, we gained over 5' of additional cabinetry, and by extending a narrow 32" to +-78", we were able to achieve an open floor plan concept without violating the integrity of this large colonial. There is a place for everything and everything has a place in this space. Organization is the key in this dream cook's kitchen layout.

Gut remodel of unit removed several varied levels to create one open loft.
