Lincoln Farmhouse LEED-H Platinum, Net-Positive Energy OVERVIEW. This LEED Platinum certified modern farmhouse ties into the cultural landscape of Lincoln, Massachusetts - a town known for its rich history, farming traditions, conservation efforts, and visionary architecture. The goal was to design and build a new single family home on 1.8 acres that respects the neighborhood’s agrarian roots, produces more energy than it consumes, and provides the family with flexible spaces to live-play-work-entertain. The resulting 2,800 SF home is proof that families do not need to compromise on style, space or comfort in a highly energy-efficient and healthy home. CONNECTION TO NATURE. The attached garage is ubiquitous in new construction in New England’s cold climate. This home’s barn-inspired garage is intentionally detached from the main dwelling. A covered walkway connects the two structures, creating an intentional connection with the outdoors between auto and home. FUNCTIONAL FLEXIBILITY. With a modest footprint, each space must serve a specific use, but also be flexible for atypical scenarios. The Mudroom serves everyday use for the couple and their children, but is also easy to tidy up to receive guests, eliminating the need for two entries found in most homes. A workspace is conveniently located off the mudroom; it looks out on to the back yard to supervise the children and can be closed off with a sliding door when not in use. WATER EFFICIENCY. Plumbing fixtures and water closets consume a mere 60% of the federal standard, while high efficiency appliances such as the dishwasher and clothes washer also reduce consumption rates. FOOD PRODUCTION. After clearing all invasive species, apple, pear, peach and cherry trees were planted. This was a living and dining room area for my e-design client completed on Laurel & Wolf platform. This collage shows her how we can utilize the blue walls that she already has, painting over some ugly orange walls with Benjamin Moore's Paper White, bringing the two spaces together for entertaining. We utilized the unused end of this odd-shaped patio with a hanging twin-sized porch swing. This unexpected feature is the star of the whole patio! Custom cushions and pillows in fabrics that coordinate with the rest of the furnishings tie the whole space together.

Next to the vanity, a half-wall provides privacy for the toilet area, yet doesn’t impede on the overall flow of the bathroom. Additionally, a beautiful custom furniture piece functions as linen storage. We carefully added traditional details throughout that enhance and compliment the existing contemporary vaulted ceiling, yet blend with the rest of the home. Custom paneling, moldings, and a corner wall column create beautiful traditional details. Our clients now have the stunning bath space they envisioned.

The gutter, which is a commercial competition gutter simliar to olympic and collegiate-level swim meet pools, has three chambers that are gravity fed with pool surge. The lowest chamber has a pump that automatically returns the swimmer surge to the pool, which has the effect of maintaining quiescence for lap swimming. This will prevent splash back from the sides, as well as maintaining the fastest surface available. This space also features a 7'0" x 8'0" hot tub at deck level, to warm up the swimmers and to help them get their muscles loose after a strenuous workout. The pool and spa coping are Valder's Wisconsin Limestone. The pool pumps are both variable-speed, and the pool is heated partially by utilizing a geothermal system.
