We build our ponds to work with mother nature, not against her. By doing so, we have less pond maintenance, allowing us to enjoy the benefits of the pond instead of having to work on the pond. By constructing your water feature to perform as an ecosystem, nature is at the heart of the water cycle, not man. As a result, the root systems of pond plants filter the water, natural bacteria breaks down organic matter and pond fish eat the algae. No chemicals or other devices, just nature, doing what nature does best.

context
The site is an existing Cape on Oyster Pond Road in Falmouth. The existing 1930's Cape had been renovated but the attached barn in the back had not.
response
The new addition is a typical barn form containing an open living/dining area, new kitchen and master suite above. The new barn mimics the existing one and with the new detached garage creates a courtyard space in the back.

Blue & White Garden with rectangular lily pond; azaleas, tree peonies, assorted Spring bulbs, perennials and flowering shrubs. Display Garden, Seekonk, MA.

Looking down on this Craftsman style cottage you see the proximity to the pond, dock with kayaks at the ready, and the surrounding woodlands. A five minute walk brings you to the many walking and biking paths through 12,000 acres of Myles Standish State Forest, a pristine example of our rare ecoregion, the Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens. A former summer camp, this site came with a unique set of challenges. An existing 1200 square foot cabin was perched on the shore of Thorndike Pond, well within the current required setbacks. Three additional outbuildings were part of the property, each of them small and non-conforming. By limiting reconstruction to the existing footprints we were able to gain planning consent to rebuild each structure. A full second story added much needed space to the main house. Two of the outbuildings have been rebuilt to accommodate guests, maintaining the spirit of the original camp. Black stained exteriors help the buildings blend into the landscape.
The project was a collaboration with Spazio Rosso Interior Design.
