Situated on a sloping site with a shared driveway and prescribed parking on the lower level, the home was designed to maximize daylight into the walk-out basement. In placing the parking in the center and wrapping the basement spaces around it, all rooms are afforded exterior views. By locating much of the home’s program below street level, the 3244 s.f. house is able to maintain a scale in keeping with the surrounding residences. The grade along the front of the site was pulled back from the home with stepped retaining walls revealing a sunken garden and above-ground basement walls. An entry bridge allows access to the front door above the sunken garden. UV-responsive, color-changing metal siding and cedar rainscreen clad the flat roof volumes of the home while fiber cement boards encase the shed roof volume. The shed was created to provide passive solar daylighting and conditioning in the vaulted living and dining rooms as well as an ideal surface for future solar panels. The home possesses a myriad of outdoor living spaces including a front balcony and sunken courtyard, side balcony terrace, and rear screened porch and deck above a covered patio. The south side balcony is wrapped with a metal and cedar clad bamboo planter which acts as a privacy screen and shading device. Accessibility was a strong consideration in the design as the homeowners were forward-thinking about aging in place. ADA-sized doorways and thresholds are provided as well as a shelled elevator shaft from the basement level.

The homeowners undertook an extensive renovation to update and enhance their compact home. While one of the owners possesses culinary talents, the other is an avid gardener who enjoys preserving the harvests from their garden. The design concept is transitional, reflecting a preference for clean modern accents but centers on the clients’ love of travel, particularly the charm and comfort of the European countryside and its quaint bistros. This large freeform pool in Barrington Hills, IL features a perimeter overflow edge. Measuring approximately 1950 square feet, the pool features custom blended glass tile in the pool, steps, wall, sun shelf and hot tub. The pool floor is an exposed aggregate from Wet Edge featuring pebbles, quartz and glass beads. The hot tub measures approximately 100 square feet, and is completely covered with the glass tile. The sunshelf measures approximately 375 square feet, and is also adorned with the same iridescent and black glass tile mix. The decking and pool coping is cut form Blue Marble. The pool has color changing LED lights as well as three LED lit bubbler water features. The outdoor living space features an outdoor kitchen and bar with two refrigerators, a sink, grill, and serving areas. The custom oversized fireplace possesses an 85" large screen, full-sun HDTV. This 1930's Barrington Hills farmhouse was in need of some TLC when it was purchased by this southern family of five who planned to make it their new home. The renovation taken on by Advance Design Studio's designer Scott Christensen and master carpenter Justin Davis included a custom porch, custom built in cabinetry in the living room and children's bedrooms, 2 children's on-suite baths, a guest powder room, a fabulous new master bath with custom closet and makeup area, a new upstairs laundry room, a workout basement, a mud room, new flooring and custom wainscot stairs with planked walls and ceilings throughout the home. The home's original mechanicals were in dire need of updating, so HVAC, plumbing and electrical were all replaced with newer materials and equipment. A dramatic change to the exterior took place with the addition of a quaint standing seam metal roofed farmhouse porch perfect for sipping lemonade on a lazy hot summer day. In addition to the changes to the home, a guest house on the property underwent a major transformation as well. Newly outfitted with updated gas and electric, a new stacking washer/dryer space was created along with an updated bath complete with a glass enclosed shower, something the bath did not previously have. A beautiful kitchenette with ample cabinetry space, refrigeration and a sink was transformed as well to provide all the comforts of home for guests visiting at the classic cottage retreat. The biggest design challenge was to keep in line with the charm the old home possessed, all the while giving the family all the convenience and efficiency of modern functioning amenities. One of the most interesting uses of material was the porcelain "wood-looking" tile used in all the baths and most of the home's common areas. All the efficiency of porcelain tile, with the nostalgic look and feel of worn and weathered hardwood floors. The home’s casual entry has an 8" rustic antique barn wood look porcelain tile in a rich brown to create a warm and welcoming first impression. Painted distressed cabinetry in muted shades of gray/green was used in the powder room to bring out the rustic feel of the space which was accentuated with wood planked walls and ceilings. Fresh white painted shaker cabinetry was used throughout the rest of the rooms, accentuated by bright chrome fixtures and muted pastel tones to create a calm and relaxing feeling throughout the home. Custom cabinetry was designed and built by Advance Design specifically for a large 70” TV in the living room, for each of the children’s bedroom’s built in storage, custom closets, and book shelves, and for a mudroom fit with custom niches for each family member by name. The ample master bath was fitted with double vanity areas in white. A generous shower with a bench features classic white subway tiles and light blue/green glass accents, as well as a large free standing soaking tub nestled under a window with double sconces to dim while relaxing in a luxurious bath. A custom classic white bookcase for plush towels greets you as you enter the sanctuary bath.

The 2cm Dekton countertops & backsplash were designed with an island height of 2 1/4 inches, creating a more dynamic space. As passionate cooks and bakers, the clients chose Wolf and SubZero appliances, panel-ready to harmonize beautifully with their kitchen design. This stunning pool in Valparaiso, IN measures 20’0” x 40’0”, and is 3’5” to 6’0” deep. The raised hot tub measures 8’0” x 8’0”. Both pool and hot tub are equipped with LED color changing lights. The sunshelf provides ample sunbathing opportunities as it possesses 122 square feet of surface area. 3 color-lighted Bubbler jets adorn the sunshelf providing a vertical element. There are two swim up benches at either end of the pool, and the entry is provided in the shallow area by a large set of elongated steps attached to the sunshelf. There is also a 40’0” lineal foot infinity edge feature with spillover waterfall, with lighting in the lower basin for accent. Glass tile is featured throughout the pool, hot tub, infinity edge and face, infinity edge basin, and pool cover housing. The pool is equipped with a hydraulic, automatic pool safety cover. At opposite ends of the infinity edge are 2 custom premium black fire bowls with automatic ignition feature. The pool is finished in Wet Edge pool surface.

This 100-year-old farmhouse underwent a complete head-to-toe renovation. In doing so, the southern living space becomes a pavilion that enjoys expansive glass openings and a generous porch. Maintaining a geometric self-confidence, this front pavilion possesses the simplicity of a barn, while its large, shadowy openings suggest shelter from the elements and refuge within. The house is tucked at the end of a long field, protected by a slight rise in the land to the west. The field is maintained by the adjacent farm, while native wildflower perennials and small areas of turf surround the domestic spaces.
