New Additions to Hoover + Hill This project is a continuation of the renovation and updating work Flavin Architects had previously completed at the 1958 Wales house, designed by architect Henry Hoover and Walter Hill. Our clients, a young family, desired more space for guests, a home office, a yoga studio, and covered car parking. The challenge was to respect the architects’ original vision and not to interfere with the perfect cruciform plan of the house. To accomplish these goals, we converted the existing garage/workshop structure into a guest house and then designed a new, separate carport/storage building. The new carport building shares the low-slope gable of the original Hoover structure. The post and beam structure characteristic of Hoover’s design is updated through the use of galvanized steel posts and I beams. The galvanized beams cantilever to support a sheltered walkway leading from the parking to a guest house terrace defined in relationship to the three structures surrounding it. The terrace is paved in slate with a central rain garden. Wood lattice clads the carport, providing good ventilation and letting the building glow like a lantern at night. Our guest house renovation celebrates the unique structural timber ceiling of the original garage. We replaced opaque plywood trusses with a slender cable truss structurally engineered by Webb Structural Services. This cable truss allows for a view of the timber ceiling. A wall of glass facing the courtyard replaced the original garage door. A murphy bed in the rear room enables quick conversion from guest quarters to weight room.

We were so excited to be able to complete and photograph such a beautifully created kitchen. It took months of planning and various ideas to make this project come to life. This kitchen was beautiful to start with so it was difficult for us to completely demolish and start from scratch, but after listening to our new clients concerns and understanding that the original kitchen floor plan was just not practical nor functional for them it was our time to shine! Custom cabinets, wonderful lighting, beautiful quartzite, seeded glass inserts, newly stained wood floors, high quality faucets, along with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances paired perfect with Ann Sacks backsplash tiles.

This project was a full design-build transformation completed by our team at Mayer’s Construction. We worked closely with the homeowners from the early planning stages through design, customization, and final installation to create updated spaces that feel elevated, intentional, and unique to their lifestyle. Inside the home, we remodeled two bathrooms and the primary suite. The master bathroom features a bold black textured slab as the focal point, paired with a custom vanity and an integrated closet layout for a seamless and functional flow. Throughout the interior bathrooms, materials were selected to reflect a clean, modern aesthetic while still feeling warm and personal. One of the standout elements of this project is the fully custom outdoor bathroom. This space includes a handcrafted wood soaking tub and a matte black privacy fence designed to frame the outdoor shower area while complementing the natural surroundings. The outdoor bath was built to feel like a retreat — private, earthy, and thoughtfully designed. The final result is a collection of spaces that balance luxury with comfort, craftsmanship with practicality. Every detail, from layout planning to material selection, was handled by our in-house team with the goal of delivering a cohesive, long-lasting design that fits the home and its owners perfectly.

The design includes a mixture of clean lines through steel beams and an open floor plan, symmetry, cool toned colors and a lot of textures like reclaimed wood walls and doors to bring it to life. The design also incorporates a geothermal heating system as a sustainable practice and a fire suppression system supplied by a newly constructed pond. “My partner and I purchased the project after the first developer had gone bankrupt. Not wanting to make the same mistakes they had, we sought out a more intelligent approach to building an upscale ski-in/out authentic full log commercial project. We sent word out for referrals, did internet research, and interviewed log home companies. An old friend of mine told me about a company in Idaho that had impressed him. In hiring Edgewood to help us redesign and plan the project for success, we found a wealth of practical knowledge and expertise. Additionally their “hands-on” approach on-site proved invaluable when coupled with the very sophisticated and creative design horsepower they brought to the table. The SIX is a 52-unit affordable housing project provides a home, support services and rehabilitation for disabled veterans. It is located in the MacArthur Park area of Los Angeles. McArthur Park has one of the highest densities in the USA with over 38,000 people per square mile and a total population of 120,000 people in 2.72 square miles. Offering shelter and comfort, the SIX breaks the prescriptive mold of the traditional shelter by creating public and private "zones" in which private space is deemphasized, in favor of large public areas. The organization of the space is intended to transform the way people live-away from a reclusive, isolating layout towards a community-oriented, interactive space. The ground level contains offices, support spaces for the veterans, bike storage and parking while the second level has a large public courtyard. Surrounded by four levels of housing units with balconies wrapped with a wood screen made from recycle planking the courtyard has large openings with green roofs that visually connects the space to the street on the lower level beyond. This allows the tenants to enjoy a secured open space while still connecting to the larger community. The uppermost level has a green roof, large public patio and edible garden with panoramic views of the area. The SIX distinguishes itself from most conventionally developed projects in that it incorporates energy efficient measures that exceed standard practice, optimize building performance, and ensure reduced energy use during all phases of construction and occupancy. The planning and design emerged from close consideration and employment of passive design strategies. These strategies include: locating and orienting the building to control solar cooling loads; shaping and orienting the building for exposure to prevailing winds; shaping the building to induce buoyancy for natural ventilation; designing windows to maximize day lighting; shading south facing windows and minimizing west-facing glazing; designing windows to maximize natural ventilation; utilizing low flow fixtures and storm water management; shaping and planning the interior to enhance daylight and natural air flow distribution. These passive strategies alone make this building 50% more efficient than a conventionally designed structure.
