For this project, our Boston design-build team worked closely with a pair of keen-eyed clients to bring their unique vision to life. The main challenge throughout was deciding how to make the most out of the relatively small 990 ft² we had to work with.

This “Arizona Inspired” home draws on some of the couples’ favorite desert inspirations. The architecture honors the Wrightian design of The Arizona Biltmore, the courtyard raised planter beds feature labeled specimen cactus in the style of the Desert Botanical Gardens, and the expansive backyard offers a resort-style pool and cabana with plenty of entertainment space. Additional focal areas of landscape design include an outdoor living room in the front courtyard with custom steel fire trough, a shallow negative-edge fountain, and a rare “nurse tree” that was salvaged from a nearby site, sits in the corner of the courtyard – a unique conversation starter. The wash that runs on either side of the museum-glass hallway is filled with aloes, agaves and cactus. On the far end of the lot, a fire pit surrounded by desert planting offers stunning views both day and night of the Praying Monk rock formation on Camelback Mountain. Creating a meditation garden Creating a personal meditation garden within your home landscape provides the perfect sanctuary to unwind and de-stress. To establish a personal and secluded place take some time to find a site in your larger landscape that feels “right” Perhaps, a tucked away corner under a large shade tree. Once selected, watch how the sun patterns fall on this site. Avoid an area that is too sunny — an eastern spot provides morning sun and will transition to cooling shade in the afternoon. If privacy is needed, consider adding a flowering hedge or fence. This will add a feeling of enclosure and privacy. A nicely placed bench surrounded by greenery has a grounding effect that is always soothing. Flowering perennials and ground covers will provide texture, color and fragrance. The elements of water, devotional statues and well placed stones adds to the cohesiveness of this personal garden. These elements blend together making it very favorable to relaxation and meditation.
