It is a truth universally acknowledged that a homeowner in possession of a leaking roof must be in want of repairs. And though it makes for a fun Jane Austen allusion, an unreliable roof is a serious problem. Water can cause a great deal of damage in a short time, so this homeowner wisely called us in to help. The roof of this custom-designed home was leaking in myriad locations, so our team removed the existing roof decks to access and repair the exterior trouble spots. The new deck was constructed atop a Bison pedestal system; in fact, we custom-designed the deck in panels that can be lifted for seasonal roof sweeping and simpler maintenance. The various roof decks were rebuilt with both reclaimed decking and new ipe decking. Our team also removed several faulty parapet walls and replaced them with a mixture of stainless steel cables and ipe railings. Finally, we took steps to prevent future drainage problems by applying a sealcoat to the exterior stucco and creating a copper drip-edge too. Decorative beams made of quarter sawn Mahogany were designed to define the rooms and bring character to the ceiling. We concealed the building's concrete support beams cladding them in the same rich wood as the ceiling beams. The cleverly designed TV enclosure conceals another support beam in it's center post. Carrying the Mahogany detail into the kitchen gave us the ability to beautifully fill the space above the cabinets and continue the natural wood look reminiscent of wood deck sailing vessels giving a nod to the nautical location of the condo. Oversized Mahogany doors and casements help to complete the look. The limestone floor was special ordered directly from the quarry to insure the least amount of artifact inclusions. To prevent fading from the wonderful wash of sunlight flooding through wall to ceiling windows, we tinted the windows and covered the sofa in indoor/outdoor Perennial fabric known for it's versatility and its resistance to stains, fading, and damage. Falcon Heights family was in need of a bathroom overhaul. Pealing ceilings and water damage in the bathroom was preventing the homeowner from enjoying their ONLY bathroom. The must have list included, deep tub, comfort height toilet, low maintenance, and transitioning the home for retirement. Simple selections were made geared towards low maintenance and function; large scale tile floors (less grout!), opening the cramped space for potential wheelchair access, 2nd cultured marble countertop at a lower height, comfort height toilet, multi-showering system, and multiple grab bars. Sprucing up the space with a fun splash of paint, the homeowners will enjoy the bathroom for many years to come.

Project Description (for Houzz): We recently completed a thoughtful hardscaping project at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Hillsborough, North Carolina, featuring a custom low retaining wall and a matching brick ash garden. The church faced ongoing sediment runoff from the upper parking lot that was washing onto the brick walkway and patio below. To resolve this, we designed and built a low retaining wall that effectively regrades the slope, prevents erosion, and protects the lower hardscape areas from future water damage and debris. The wall provides both practical drainage solutions and a clean, structural enhancement to the grounds. Complementing the wall, we created a custom brick ash garden that seamlessly integrates with the church’s existing columbarium. Using carefully selected brick to match the surrounding architecture, the new garden offers a respectful, peaceful space for memorialization while maintaining visual and stylistic harmony across the property. This project highlights our expertise in combining functionality with respectful design—delivering durable solutions that solve site challenges while honoring the character and purpose of sacred spaces. It’s not often that we get called abroad for a job, but when we do, it’s always a fantastic experience. We have done a few jobs abroad in the past, including the restoration of Terracotta tiled restaurant floor at a hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This job was closer to home at a chateau in the town of Arcis-le-Ponsart near Reims, located in the Champagne-Ardenne region of North Eastern France. As its name suggests, the Champagne-Ardenne region is famous for its champagne. The owner of the chateau was, in fact, an English property developer. He asked us to work on two floors: a Terracotta tiled hallway, and a French Victorian tiled floor. The French style of Victorian tiles are actually made of encaustic cement rather than clay, so we were excited to have the chance to work on something a bit out of the ordinary. It was going to be a long trip, so after packing the van with the necessary equipment and Tile Doctor products Heidi and I set off to France via the Channel Tunnel. Fortunately, we avoided any disruptions both on the way there and the way back! On arrival at the chateau, we immediately spent two hours running tests on the two floors to determine the most effective processes. We had four days in which to complete the job, so it was essential to make sure our methods were correct before beginning to avoid any unwelcome surprises later on! After running the tests, we set about cleaning the Victorian tiles using a combination of clean water and diamond burnishing pads. No damage was done to the tiles, and they polished up well. Following the cleaning process, we began sealing the floor using Tile Doctor Colour Grow, a sealer which helps to bring out the colour in the stone while also providing durable surface protection. We were only able to apply one coat of sealer, however, as the second coat kept smearing, preventing the shine from settling in – this was despite testing the process earlier. Nonetheless, we resolved to polish off the one coat we could apply with a fine burnishing pad. Thankfully, the results were still very good. The Terracotta tiled hallway had no sealer, and so it had, over time, become very dirty. We cleaned the tiles using a solution of one part Tile Doctor Pro Clean to five parts clean water, in combination with a couple of black burnishing pads. As you can see from the pictures, the combination really helped to lift out the ingrained dirt, leaving the tiles looking at their best again. The floor took three days to dry completely before we could begin the sealing process. Once the floor was dry enough to seal, we applied eight coats of Tile Doctor Seal & Go, which is suitable for use on a variety of internal, unsealed porous surfaces. It was a long and exhausting week but the client was delighted with the results on both floors and left the following comments, he also mentioned using Tile Doctor in the future to work on the other properties he is developing. “Thanks for yours and Heidi’s work in renovating our floors. It was also great to meet you guys and I hope you have enjoyed your visit to champagne and will come back some time. “
