Rockledge Design + ArchitectureFrom the plum-brown limewashed walls to the curated mix of antique and contemporary elements, this en suite primary bath exudes quiet luxury. The inspiration for this space began with the early 20th century English washstand. The warm wood, Carrara marble top, and striking backsplash featuring original Racing Green pool glazed tiles set the tone for the rest of the room’s materials palette. To help transform the piece into a functioning modern day vanity, we added custom brass feet, new cabinet and drawer hardware, and an offset matte stone sink paired with a brushed brass single handle faucet.
We kept the space feeling relaxed and not too formal by incorporating fun, current silhouettes for the rest of our selections. A repeating pill-shaped motif shows up in the statement-making light fixtures, tub filler, hanging planters, and tub-side mirrored table. Similarly, reeded/fluted patterns can be found on the pocket door glass, bathroom accessories, artwork, and louvered linen closet door.
On the walls, natural limewash in the moody shade “Anise” from Bauwerk Color has been treated with a hand-burnished wax coating, making the textured surface safe for use in wet spaces. The suede-like finish adds rich character to the space, changing with the varying sunlight throughout the day. We’ve used a two-tone hexagon mosaic floor tile in both classic Carrara and dramatic Nero Marquina to help delineate the wet and dry halves of the bathroom. The soaking tub is placed on a 4” angled platform, breaking up the floor plan and making the space more dynamic.

mackmiller design+buildMs. Homeowner’s townhome Primary Bathroom was a cookie-cutter, builder-grade space that she wanted upgraded and updated. The shower tile was discolored and mildewed; the traditional vanity tile floor and tub deck were also outdated. Our client wanted an accessible bathroom she could age in place in featuring an updated, modern yet timeless and elegant design, with better storage all within a conservative budget.
The main challenge in this project was to transform the space and raise the design quotient within the requested budget. We kept the basic footprint, preserved the existing maple doors and trim, saved and re-used the bathtub, purchased a sleek pre-fabricated, vanity which included the countertop and sinks. We reserved some of the budget for high impact items, upgrading fixtures and finishes in every area. We made the shower safer and more visually open by installing a curbless, barrier-free floor, and a frameless glass shower door and panels. We extended the tub deck into the shower area which is a functioning bench and product shelf. We replaced all of the tile, faucets, hardware and accessories with sleek chrome components. A client-requested, high quality commode with a remote controlled Toto washlet seat was installed. The eye-catching color scheme, based on the new vanity and countertop is a balance of rich, dark neutrals paired with crisp whites, bright chrome fixtures, and turquoise wall paint which beautifully coordinates with the existing natural maple doors and trim.

Stalburg DesignRelocating from their home in Brisbane, Australia with ocean views to the Pacific, our clients envisioned a refresh for their new lakefront cottage on Pine Lake in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Completed in July 2024, we created new spaces, reimagined old ones, and even swapped places for a primary bedroom and its en suite bath.
Our goal was to create a serene and soothing spa- like experience for the bathroom, all while maintaining gorgeous lake views. But this reconfiguration presented some challenges. The primary bedroom was oversized, while its adjacent bath was tiny and crowded. We completely flipped the locations of the bedroom and bathroom, even rerouting plumbing over the bar in the lower level to accommodate the freestanding tub.
To maximize space, we designed large, walk-in dressing pantries that are as functional as they are beautiful, and lead to the large dual custom vanity. The vanity itself is freestanding to provide access for hand towel bath hardware on its sides. The his-and-hers unit contains built-in dividers, laundry hampers and trash pullouts to maximize its function. An enclosed water closet allows for privacy in the open concept bathroom, and is placed beyond the cabinetry.
The star of this space is the large enclosed wet room. As the focal point of the bathroom, its oversized tiled walls and deep built-in bench allow for a steam or soaking in the tub while enjoying stunning lake views. The wet room is spacious and serene, and perfect for an end to a Michigan winter day.
