A private residence that redefines contemporary living through bold self-expression and layered storytelling. Designed as an intimate extension of its vibrant neighborhood, the home allows architecture to recede, becoming a canvas for art, identity, and personal mythology. This new detached garage was designed to express the owner’s contemporary tastes, while also adding functional space and aesthetic appeal. The exterior features a unique and durable charred cedar siding finish, which extends from the garage as a screen element to connect with the main house. This connection is further defined by a new metal standing seam roof detail. A custom gate leads visitors from the vehicle court into the private backyard.

Aptly titled Artist Haven, our Aspen studio designed this private home in Aspen's West End for an artist-client who expresses the concept of "less is more." In this extensive remodel, we created a serene, organic foyer to welcome our clients home. We went with soft neutral palettes and cozy furnishings. A wool felt area rug and textural pillows make the bright open space feel warm and cozy. The floor tile turned out beautifully and is low maintenance as well. We used the high ceilings to add statement lighting to create visual interest. Colorful accent furniture and beautiful decor elements make this truly an artist's retreat.

Grand plantings create a private gathering place for friends and family. When our clients expressed a wish for an extended outdoor living space that provided privacy and a place for family and friends to gather, they brought in D. A. Dunlevy to install the final design vision. The home was bookended by two cleared lots awaiting new construction, so creating a secluded feel was very important to the homeowners. We used larger plantings to give an immediate privacy screen, interspersed with a wide variety of other plants, flowers, and shrubs, as well as a gorgeous Japanese maple. The crew also installed stone retaining walls, flagstone patios, and a pool that sits serenely among the botanical design, creating a reflective oasis of beauty.

The house and landscape intertwine. The property affords a number of excellent views to the distant horizon, and like many settings in the southwest; there is a low lying horizontality to the adjacent topography. As such, we intentionally wanted to express that in the architecture. The northern portion of the house is carved into the land several feet; to express a rootedness to the earth, while the southern portion rises to meet the panoramic views. The character of the home is distinctly contemporary, which accentuates and focuses attention on the organic features of the land, which are embraced by the architecture. By adhering to, yet abstracting, the underlying principles of the southwestern vernacular, with its lean, almost Zen-like simplicity, the architecture allows the views to the natural environment to dominate. The stark contrast between the manmade architecture and natural scenery complement both.
