From hops to floors, we worked extensively with our design savvy clients to provide a new footprint for their kitchen, dining and living room area, redesigned three bathrooms, reconfigured and designed the master suite, and replaced an existing spiral staircase with a new modern, steel staircase. We collaborated with an architect to expedite the permit process, as well as hired a structural engineer to help with the new loads from removing the stairs and load bearing walls in the kitchen and Master bedroom. We also used LED light fixtures, FSC certified cabinetry and low VOC paint finishes. In this inventive interior reimagining of a Romanesque Revival pre-war building which previously served as a whale bone cutting facility, simple textures merge with the beautiful curvature and direction of light within the space. Exquisite pieces, procured from the Charles Trevelyn collection and Studio Drift through The Carpenters Workshop Gallery add a sophisticated but yet aproachable charm to the living spaces. Objects sourced for the sitting area include a pair of original 1944 ‘Muslingestole’ or Clam Chairs by Philip Arctander that provide a distinctive and inviting character to the room. Accented with birch wood details and marble counters, these understated details provide a timeless elegance.

For the discerning client, this oceanfront home is conceived with architectural precision as a legacy sanctuary. The living area harmoniously connects the interior with the vast horizon through expansive glazing, allowing the natural setting to become the focal point of the design. A bespoke, dramatic marble fireplace anchors the space, while the custom FF&E procurement—including the distinctive lighting fixture and curvilinear seating—ensures an environment of sophisticated comfort. Kimmel Interiors crafted a space that is both refined and enduring, a true expression of high-end, contemporary living.

The original small 2 bedroom dwelling was deconstructed piece by piece, with every element recycled/re-used. The larger, newly built home + studio uses much less energy than the original. In fact, the home and office combined are net zero (the home’s blower door test came in at Passive House levels, though certification was not procured). The transformed home boasts a better functioning layout, increased square footage, and bold accent colors to boot. The multiple level patios book-end the home’s front and rear facades. The added outdoor living with the nearly 13’ sliding doors allows ample natural light into the home. The transom windows create an increased openness with the floor to ceiling glazing. The larger tilt-turn windows throughout the home provide ventilation and open views for the 3-level contemporary home. In addition, the larger overhangs provide increased passive thermal protection from the scattered sunny days. The conglomeration of exterior materials is diverse and playful with dark stained wood, concrete, natural wood finish, and teal horizontal siding. A fearless selection of a bright orange window brings a bold accent to the street-side composition. These elements combined create a dynamic modern design to the inclusive Portland backdrop.

Making the Most of a Small Footprint We maximized the room’s small footprint by designing a custom built-in bed, nightstands, and desk. We then added visual interest and sound dampening with the acoustic slat walls. The end result is a guest suite as beautiful and luxurious as the finest hotels. Located in Whitefish, Montana near one of our nation’s most beautiful national parks, Glacier National Park, Great Northern Lodge was designed and constructed with a grandeur and timelessness that is rarely found in much of today’s fast paced construction practices. Influenced by the solid stacked masonry constructed for Sperry Chalet in Glacier National Park, Great Northern Lodge uniquely exemplifies Parkitecture style masonry. The owner had made a commitment to quality at the onset of the project and was adamant about designating stone as the most dominant material. The criteria for the stone selection was to be an indigenous stone that replicated the unique, maroon colored Sperry Chalet stone accompanied by a masculine scale. Great Northern Lodge incorporates centuries of gained knowledge on masonry construction with modern design and construction capabilities and will stand as one of northern Montana’s most distinguished structures for centuries to come.
