Completed in 2011 this 4 BR, 3 1/2 bath custom home is situated on a very tight urban infill lot in Northern, Virginia. Our clients were relocating to the D.C. area from New England and wanted to retain some of the New England vernacular they were familiar with in their new home. Due to heavy zoning restrictions, stylistic CCR's and a large program of almost 7000 sf, our design response is a modern take on a traditional hipped 4-square.
We intentionally kept the skin and form of the building simple in order to contain cost and allow for a higher level of interior finish. The main level employs our favorite Great Room scheme that merges cooking, eating and entertaining into one seamless space that flows onto an expansive deck overlooking the rear yard. The entry elevation welcomes guests with a traditional front porch and stone path that passes by a small rain garden. The basement accommodates a guest room, media room, exercise area, and full shop while the upper level orients 2 kid's bedrooms, a Jack-n-Jill bath and the master suite toward a territorial view of the rear yard. All of this program is housed beneath a hipped roof that minimizes the scale of the house while presenting a thoughtful appearance toward the street and neighbors.

Our clients wanted to create a backyard that would grow with their young family as well as with their extended family and friends. Entertaining was a huge priority! This family-focused backyard was designed to equally accommodate play and outdoor living/entertaining.
The outdoor living spaces needed to accommodate a large number of people – adults and kids. Urban Oasis designed a deck off the back door so that the kitchen could be 36” height, with a bar along the outside edge at 42” for overflow seating. The interior space is approximate 600 sf and accommodates both a large dining table and a comfortable couch and chair set. The fire pit patio includes a seat wall for overflow seating around the fire feature (which doubles as a retaining wall) with ample room for chairs.
The artificial turf lawn is spacious enough to accommodate a trampoline and other childhood favorites. Down the road, this area could be used for bocce or other lawn games. The concept is to leave all spaces large enough to be programmed in different ways as the family’s needs change.
A steep slope presents itself to the yard and is a focal point. Planting a variety of colors and textures mixed among a few key existing trees changed this eyesore into a beautifully planted amenity for the property.

The client was referred to us by the builder to build a vacation home where the family mobile home used to be. Together, we visited Key Largo and once there we understood that the most important thing was to incorporate nature and the sea inside the house. A meeting with the architect took place after and we made a few suggestions that it was taking into consideration as to change the fixed balcony doors by accordion doors or better known as NANA Walls, this detail would bring the ocean inside from the very first moment you walk into the house as if you were traveling in a cruise.
A client's request from the very first day was to have two televisions in the main room, at first I did hesitate about it but then I understood perfectly the purpose and we were fascinated with the final results, it is really impressive!!! and he does not miss any football games, while their children can choose their favorite programs or games. An easy solution to modern times for families to share various interest and time together.
Our purpose from the very first day was to design a more sophisticate style Florida Keys home with a happy vibe for the entire family to enjoy vacationing at a place that had so many good memories for our client and the future generation.

Archia Homes wins national Design award!
Continuing to set new standards of professionalism, 79 companies across the United States were named winners in the 2020 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence. The entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.
This winning entry is the conversion of the third story attic in a Milton, Ma Victorian to a beautiful master suite, complete with en suite bath, sitting nook, custom built-ins, a stylish walk-in closet and a large Juliet porch with a view to Boston.
“This company has won six Chrysalis awards in the past decade, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to professionalism and excellence,” says Ken Kanline, Director of Awards.
The Chrysalis Awards Program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in 14 general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to every design professional and professional remodeler in the United States.
Archia Homes wishes to recognize its design team #PeterStames and #HeidiPetrowicz; fine carpentry team, Nick Cody and Eli Meharg; our partners at #DesignWoodFloors, #SnowandJones, #ConciergeBuildingCompany, #ComfortTechnology, #RadiusElectric, #MacleodandMoynihan, #RusticRenovations, #GeorgeJGray and of course, our stellar clients, the Byrnes for collaborating with us on this spectacular project.

This was a complete transformation that incorporated a brick Cape Cod into a stunning modern home. It offers two-family living with a separate dwelling. The retractable glass walls that lead to a central courtyard provide family and entertaining space. Our designer solved many design challenges to meet the program, including working the design around a difficult lot and zoning rules.

In collaboration with the Lawrenceville Corporation, Rothschild Doyno, and The Urban Redevelopment Authority, EcoCraft Homes is helping to redefine the image of affordable urban housing. Working through a newly defined mechanism called the “Community Land Trust” program Lawrenceville Corporation is pioneering a new standard for community development and affordable home ownership.
Phase one of the CLT development consists of 6 new and one renovation unit that are built with materials that are equal to, or often times of a higher quality than the market rate homes that Lawrenceville has become known for. In addition, every CLT home has been designed to seamlessly integrate into existing historical fabric of Upper Lawrenceville by respecting and implementing design elements from contextual neighborhood patterns.
The CLT design team’s radically different approach to sustainability, resiliency, and energy efficiency will ensure the affordability of these homes remain intact for generations, challenging the idea that affordability should equate to compromises in the quality of living.

I completed the design for this project while working with G. Christianson Construction.
Our clients hired us to replace their aging 1950's vintage bathroom with a modern spa experience. We worked with them to design a bathroom in a 3D program so they could see what the bathroom would be like. Once the design was chosen, they fell in love with a green granite slab with a undermounted bathtub so they could simply wipe the water off of the tile shower walls into the tub. Custom cherry cabinetry, heated tile floors, frameless tub shower door and a rain shower head finished out this spectacular bathroom.

Architectural Designs House Plan 24355TW ("Frank Lloyd Wright Inspired House Plan") was was designed for a business executivbe in the Atlanta area who had a gorgeous sloping lot with water views. Interested in having the home as efficient as possible, it was designed and built to meet Georgia's EarthCents program. To achieve this, the home had to be on average 15% more energy efficient when compared to standard homes built to the minimum state and local codes. It passed with flying colors and saves the homeowner up to $400 annually on energy bills. What's even better, this plan is available for you to build here... http://www.architecturaldesigns.com/house-plan-24355TW.asp

The Emily program once again partnered with LiLu to create a distinctive environment for healing, this time for its Toogood building in St. Paul. From an old industrial building surfaced a restored space expertly designed to enhance the counseling of adolescents with eating disorders. A custom color scheme balances warm and cool colors to emphasize the transition from one area to another. Color blocking and large-scale carpet patterns contrast the rough texture, scale and overwhelming presence of brick walls. Patterns, finishes and artwork appeal to the youthful spirit.

Studio Saxe was commissioned to design a beachfront house in the beautiful town of Santa Teresa in Costa Rica. We decided to integrate the jungle experience into the house and also frame the views of the ocean whilst blending with nature.
Concept
Studio Saxe decomposed the mass of the building into a series of pavilions with overlapping roofs that create interesting circulation spaces between the volumes. By dematerializing the volumes, we integrated the home into its lush surroundings.
Design
Studio Saxe used the decomposition of volumes to house the different programs of the project. Pavilions are divided into bedrooms, living spaces, service areas, and together they create a harmony that is weaved together through the circulation of indoor/outdoor spaces. This in turn allows the inhabitant to experience the intense natural surrounding every time they have to move from one place to the other.
Sustainability
The project was conceived as a decomposition of the volumes and this allowed for cross-ventilation due to the exposure of every space to at least 2 or 3 walls to the outside. The extended rooflines are carefully placed to protect from the sun and the rain through a process of bioclimatic design which analyzes the sun patterns, winds, and precipitation to create comfort without the use of energy. An array of sustainable systems such as rainwater catchment, water recycling systems, energy generation, and clever design makes this project a pioneer in sustainable tropical architecture that has passive design at its core.
Construction
Studio Saxe was interested in creating the sensation of floating rooflines, thus a series of thin columns support the roof planes in a way that they seem as they are floating A combination of steel and wood construction with concrete foundations allowed for the lightness of space, and this bleeding of boundaries between the structure and the outside.

The retractable glass walls that lead to a central courtyard provide family and entertaining space. The home was built as a case study in Sustainable and Energy Efficient building design. Passive Solar design strategies and new construction technologies are employed that marry with the Site and Program goals.
• Solar orientation of the spaces;
• broad eaves for shade;
• natural cross ventilation to take advantage of the delta Breeze;
• Natural Daylighting;
• Structural Insulated Panel System (SIPS) construction;
• FSC-certified lumber and cedar siding;
• High Efficiency insulations, windows and lighting;
• pre-finished fiber cement Rain-screen siding;
• thermal mass polished concrete floors with radiant heating;,
• Photovoltaic solar power ready butterfly roof.
