For over four decades, the San Francisco Decorator Showcase has raised more than $17 million to benefit the San Francisco University High School Financial Aid Program. This year, neither pandemic nor wildfire stayed its organizers from bringing the event to fruition. On Saturday, the 43rd Annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase opened to the public virtually, after public-health orders delayed the event’s original April opening date. This latest edition celebrates West Coast talents while highlighting the wares of high-end sponsors such as The Shade Store, Waterworks, Circa Lighting, and Kohler. While the linear, unadorned furniture and fixtures certainly put the “modern” in Regan Baker’s Modern Mediterranean kitchen and breakfast nook, the installation also pays homage to 1920s-era kitchens. The cabinetry recalls freestanding pieces, marble countertops, and natural brass finishes that will wear with age. Notably, the cabinets’ verdigris color provides instant patina.

Nestled against a densely mature growth of poplar, the metsä house employs a modernist vocabulary while being acutely sensitive to the site's natural landscape. Adhering to a rigourous design brief, the house was designed to be adaptable and resilient, and to reflect the homeowner's requirement for a high-performance home, while being attentive to the pristine setting. From the entry to the site, the house is slowly revealed through a stand of trees upon approach. The house aims to be warm, simple, clear, and open, with a palette of black accents, wood and concrete. A roof canopy extends outward to announce and provide shelter at the transparent main entry. Roof extensions provide shade and cover over outdoor amenities. The rear courtyard serves as a link to exterior activities between the various volumes. The home's program is divided into separate, modestly sized volumes that are expertly integrated between a grove of trees and a forest floor of natural and native plants. Motorized Hunter Douglas Screen Shades were the perfect solution, as they could be programmed to lower or raise according to solar altitude at any given time of day. Drapery panels compliment the height of these expansive windows and softly frame the view. This home also presented opportunities for slipcovers, top treatments, and Norman custom plantation shutters.

With nearly 14,000 square feet of transparent planar architecture, In Plane Sight, encapsulates — by a horizontal bridge-like architectural form — 180 degree views of Paradise Valley, iconic Camelback Mountain, the city of Phoenix, and its surrounding mountain ranges. Large format wall cladding, wood ceilings, and an enviable glazing package produce an elegant, modernist hillside composition. The challenges of this 1.25 acre site were few: a site elevation change exceeding 45 feet and an existing older home which was demolished. The client program was straightforward: modern and view-capturing with equal parts indoor and outdoor living spaces. Though largely open, the architecture has a remarkable sense of spatial arrival and autonomy. A glass entry door provides a glimpse of a private bridge connecting master suite to outdoor living, highlights the vista beyond, and creates a sense of hovering above a descending landscape. Indoor living spaces enveloped by pocketing glass doors open to outdoor paradise. The raised peninsula pool, which seemingly levitates above the ground floor plane, becomes a centerpiece for the inspiring outdoor living environment and the connection point between lower level entertainment spaces (home theater and bar) and upper outdoor spaces.
