APLD 2021 Silver Award Winning Landscape Design. An expansive back yard landscape with several mature oak trees and a stunning Golden Locust tree has been transformed into a welcoming outdoor retreat. The renovations include a wraparound deck, an expansive travertine natural stone patio, stairways and pathways along with concrete retaining walls and column accents with dramatic planters. The pathways meander throughout the landscape... some with travertine stepping stones and gravel and those below the majestic oaks left natural with fallen leaves. Raised vegetable beds and fruit trees occupy some of the sunniest areas of the landscape. A variety of low-water and low-maintenance plants for both sunny and shady areas include several succulents, grasses, CA natives and other site-appropriate Mediterranean plants complimented by a variety of boulders. Dramatic white pots provide architectural accents, filled with succulents and citrus trees. Design, Photos, Drawings © Eileen Kelly, Dig Your Garden Landscape Design

Arctostaphylos columbiana (Hairy Manzanita) thrives in the dry slopes of this woodland garden. The unique bark provides year-round interest. The fruit is a good source of winter food for birds visiting your garden.

Staghorn NYC designed and installed this townhouse backyard garden for a young family in Brooklyn. The clients requested a pea gravel patio for it's casual style and great drainage properties and a palette of mostly native plants. River birch trees anchor the back of the yard and provide dappled shade, and lush border plantings give color and interest during all four seasons.

To create a private courtyard just off the home office, Eden fabricated a hexagonal perforated steel screen, covered in ‘Tangerine Beauty’ crossvine, to define the space. A large specimen Agave weberi punctuated the area and provided privacy. Low-maintenance concrete benches and a coffee table provided opportunities for lounging. Highland Landscaping designed and installed the irrigation, drainage, landscaping, and sod for this residential new construction. We installed drip irrigation in as many areas as possible versus the traditional above ground sprinkler system design. The design of drip irrigation, native and adapted plant species, coincides with Highland Landscaping’s mission to provide leading edge water conservation designs. We strive to create robust, hardy landscapes that require very little water or maintenance, and thrive in Texas.

Despite being just a couple miles from the downtown core, this home feels decidedly rural. Its streamside setting provides an opportunity for urban homesteading, with the homeowners maintaining a vegetable and herb garden as well as raising small livestock. The low-maintenance landscape complements the contemporary residence with geometric forms, but uses natural materials and native or drought-tolerant plants to blend the home into its setting.

The bank of this shoreline is held up and protected by 18-24" Wisconsin granite boulders. The beach sand is held in place at the top of this retaining wall by a minimalist planting of Prairie Dropseed grass, a native prairie plant of Wisconsin. With it's clean arching form, the grass serves it's purpose well avoiding pollinators in high use areas, providing a faint natural vanilla scent while in bloom and displaying a brilliantly beautiful rusty red-orange in the Fall.

The exterior of this hillside home was completely renovated utilizing contemporary materials and details well suited to our Southern California climate. The entry was designed to provide a secure and private garden atrium. The floating roof allows plenty of natural light into the space as well as providing protection from the elements.

One of the earliest native plants to emerge in spring, Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica), is currently unfurling it's blue-green leaves in woodland areas and shaded gardens all around the Chicagoland area. As the pink flower buds appear, they quickly turn blue, providing a beautiful bi-colored effect in the process. Best interplanted with other shade loving plants such as hosta and ferns, Virginia Bluebells will die back and go dormant in mid-summer. Planted en masse, these sweet wildflowers are a stunning sight in the naturalized landscape.

This coastal garden is located 4 hours north of Sydney. This garden has been an ongoing project for Secret Gardens over the last decade. The original brief was for a ‘mini botanic garden’ which proved a challenge on a site with little tree or vegetation cover and limited top soil. The plantings are 95% native, from the establishing rainforest where over 25 varieties of trees have been used to the drier areas where Callistemon, Kangaroo Paw and ornamental grasses have been used in large swathes. The result now is an established garden that will continue to evolve and provide great enjoyment for our clients.

Fall-blooming wildflowers and grasses add color and texture to this Florida yard. Since the plants used are native to this environment, they require no fertilizer or irrigation, and they provide food and shelter to birds, butterflies, and other wildlife.

When the homeowners bought their house, the builder had left them with a practically nonexistent back yard. Boulder retaining walls sat just a few feet away from the house and deck, and behind the property a gravel parking lot loomed over the house. Rebuilding the retaining walls created space for the homeowners to actually enjoy their yard. Their two energetic dogs have some space to play, and the selection of native plants welcomes birds into their back yard. As the plants mature, they will provide privacy and screening from the parking lot.
