This smaller space has tons of hidden storage—from a roll-up beverage station, to the pull-out cabinet accessories. A welcome change from the ordinary, the contemporary styling of the Bayne media console is nothing short of extraordinary. Built in 1949, this Edina home had a strong horizontal presence on the site, but through subsequent renovations the overall massing was lacking clarity and refinement and the entry was diminutive and uninviting. The roof and siding materials were aging, and important interior spaces were cramped and closed in. The house needed better light, better connection internally and out, and exterior updates to clarify and enhance the strengths of the home. The primary design evolved out of a celebration of the existing horizontality of the home and a recognition that a bigger home was not needed. By layering materiality and color, a new identity was created. A new cedar entry canopy slips out from under the previous roof line, extending further towards the street. This added warmth at the entry is echoed along the facade, creating a graceful rhythm and texture. The previous additions were re-clad with a darker material palette in order to anchor and unify the ends of the home. As the grade slopes down towards the back yard, horizontal bands are exposed, revealing the layering top to bottom. Combined, these few shifts in color and materiality allowed for a complete transformation of the home. The interior is reflective of the material and color palette used outside. The main living spaces are opened up and connected while strengthening the original symmetry of the more formal linear alignment of rooms. A whole new kitchen relocates the center of the home and makes more fluid the daily life of this young family. The house is fully transformed inside and out, all without adding more square feet. In keeping with Tulloch’s desire for a simple no-fuss lifestyle, leather is often used for upholstery. “He preferred wipe-able areas,” she says. “Nearly everything in the living room is clad in leather.” An architecturally striking, oak-coffered ceiling warms the family room, while Saturnia marble flooring grounds the space in cool comfort. “Since it’s just off the kitchen, this relaxed space provides the perfect place for family and friends to congregate — somewhere to hang out,” Corredor says. The deep-seated sofa wrapped in tan leather and Minotti armchairs in white join a pair of linen-clad ottomans for ample seating. With eight bedrooms in the home, there was “plenty of space to repurpose,” Corredor says. “Five are used for sleeping quarters, but the others have been converted into a billiard room, a home office and the memorabilia room.” On the first floor, the billiard room is set for fun and entertainment with doors that open to the pool area. This was the third house that we were involved in a Design/Build project for the owner over a period of 25 years. It represented the final stage in the life cycle of a home with five children to empty nesters and then to a home designed to accommodate their married children and grand children. The owners taste for the unusual is reflected in the exotic granite that was chosen for the shower walls and seat. Recognition of the aging process is shown with the addition of a safety grab bar and a skid free shower floor. This shower features dual access through two frameless shower doors and employs a high tech shower tower that enables the owners to create a variety of shower experiences.

The client was looking for a multi-purpose space that includes an outdoor refrigerator, built in grill, firepit, seatwall, lighting both in and around the patio, and a basalt stone water feature. These pavers have modern, clean lines and are stain resistant. This patio was awarded "Finalist" recognition at the prestigious Unilock Awards of Excellence competition in 2015.

A lot of homes built in the early 1900s in Portland have been remodeled beyond recognition. The trim has been painted, the floors replaced and the built-ins just didn't make it through years of wear and tear. That's not the case with this home in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood of Portland. Built in 1911, the dark trim remained unpainted, the fir floors still intact and the built-ins in the dining room were in almost perfect condition but the home was dark, empty and didn't function for the owners. Contrary to all my other thoughts in design to lighten a home, we embraced the dark. The trim and floors were sanded and refinished to their original state. In the entry, the walls were painted black. After multiple meetings and conversations with the client where nothing out there seemed quite right, I developed along with artist, Michael Paulus, a custom flower that fit the owner's personality and style down to the scale and exact color palette. This became the inspiration and guiding color scheme to create a glamorous but livable home that was neutral and rich in texture.
