The floor surface is a permeable Decomposed Granite with Dymondia margaretae creeping between the pavers. Replacing the grass greatly reduced the amount of irrigation needed.

Transitional dining room photo in Chicago

Xeric landscape designed and built by Southern Landscape. This Austin homeowner reduced their turf area by over 17,000 square feet, reducing water consumption and maintenance. The remaining turf areas were required for the septic leach field. Limestone retaining walls with leuders caps control erosion. The plant palette contains lantana, plumbago, various grasses, and yuccas, all chosen for their specific water usage appropriate to the area. Landscape lighting was also added to highlight the beauty of this large xeriscape.

The existing, sloped lawn perched above the swimming pool was replaced with a mix of CA native sedge (Carex praegracilis) and overseeded with California poppies and alyssum. At the base of the slope are Stachys byzantine. The Lamb's ears plants are soft to the touch and have a beautiful color and texture however once grown in they will help reduce run off from the hillside.

This portion of the yard needed some significant changes to the grade. We installed pecky cedarwood to bring the left side of the entrance higher, reducing erosion; filled in and graded the soil under the mesquite tree. We suggested installing sod to ease mesquite litter clean-up and to create a cooling or quiet atmosphere to the entrance.

Contrary to popular belief, fish will actually reduce pond maintenance, as they graze on string algae and bottom feed from the pond floor. Plants include bullrush, pink canna lilies, horsetail, and a rose arey hybrid water lily. www.deckandpatio.com
