A young family moving from NYC tackled a lightning fast makeover of their new colonial revival home before the arrival of their second child. The kitchen area was quite spacious but needed a facelift and new layout. Painted cabinetry matched to Benjamin Moore’s Light Pewter is balanced by grey glazed rift oak cabinetry on the island. Shiplap paneling on the island and cabinet lend a slightly contemporary edge. White bronze hardware by Schaub & Co. in a contemporary bar shape offer clean lines with some texture in a warm metallic tone. White Marble countertops in “Alpine Mist” create a harmonious color palette while the pale blue/grey Waterworks backsplash adds a touch of color. The pergola is built from rough-sawn cedar, adding to the backyard's remote and rustic feel. To reduce the risk of slivers, the pergola legs were sanded smooth, while the upper beams retain their rugged texture.

The owners wanted to incorporate wood into the design, but they also wanted to reduce the maintenance of real wood as much as possible. We used all-natural cedar wood on the two locations that are most visible to the eye: the timber-framed entrance in front and the bump-out in back. We also added decorative rough-sawn cedar brackets at the roofline to build visual interest above.

The scale, massing, texture, and use of materials attempted to compliment the natural environment. The use of pole barn post and beam construction methods intentionally reduced the impact of the built form on the indigenous landscape. The use of galvanized steel, rough sawn fir and cedar, concrete block, and industrial hardware shaped the building form to reference the regional vernacular of south central Montana, and were intended to weather and take on the patina similar to built forms found throughout the area built around the turn of the century.
