A 1970’s addition on the rear of this house awkwardly consumed the entire backyard and reduced natural light to the interior, creating a dark kitchen and dining room. This project was a unique one in that we actually reduced the square footage. One of the advantages of living in California is that a backyard can easily serve as an extra room - with dining, entertainment, and lounge space usable for most of the year. In order to maximize natural daylight into the heart of the home, two large bi-folding patio doors were installed in the kitchen and dining room. This creates a strong connection to the backyard entertainment space, complete with an exterior kitchen and fire-pit seating area. The exterior of the house was redesigned to compliment a modern landscape project. A cedar rain screen leads guests to the front door - shifting the visual emphasis to the front door and reducing the prominence of the garage. The cedar gave the facade a modern, warm feel and differentiated the house from it’s neighbors

We love the mix of the orchid-purple counter stool upholstery in this crisp, white kitchen. The decorative chandelier over the island in polished nickel adds a modern edge. On the island we mixed walnut with a white quartz, the warmth of the walnut in the dining part of the island creates a welcoming space to linger while the other side of the island serves as additional work and prep space. The clients were inspired to renovate following exposure to Zen architecture while honeymooning in Japan. The architectural brief was to deliver a modern Australian home that serves as a private, meditative retreat that would also cater to a buzzing family as their relationship evolves; and transform into a welcoming and generous entertaining space. The home would need to maximise the potential of the sites orientation and create a strong connection to generous and versatile outdoor spaces including sheltered entertaining areas and spacious areas for planting and lawn. It was essential that elements of the existing residence be retained where possible to reduce waste, however disguised so that the final product was effectively a new home.

We reduced the number of glass profiles in the uppers to hide the practical items that aren't as pretty. Swapping about huge base cabinets with useful drawers offered more options for this service area.

Today's city living requires that exterior spaces serve as flexible, multi-purpose outdoor rooms. This patio was designed to suit the client's need for a gathering space, parking and increased privacy. A bluestone patio defined an outdoor dining room and enhanced the existing architectural vocabulary. A structural lawn, capable of bearing the weight of a truck, provided flexible parking. A grape trellis, matched with small evergreen shrubs, increased privacy while native plants were selected to attract birds and butterflies while reducing water use.
