John Rogers DesignIt is always a pleasure to work with a classic architectural firm like Jack Arnold Homes Tulsa, OK. Jack is an exceptional architect and this was my first opportunity to light one of his projects.
I was contracted by DES of Rogers, AR to create a lighting design plan for this contemporary residence in Tulsa, OK. The client requested I only create lighting design plans for the public areas of the house. That is typical when a client wants to reduce the lighting design fee expense.
The interior architecture has very clean lines and I did not want to clutter the ceiling with recessed cans. I wanted to use the ceilings as a light reflector. The kitchen upper cabinets did not go to the ceiling so I used the upper cabinets to house linear LEDs to reflect light off the ceiling. To balance that light I suggested the owner add a shelf extension to the breakfast room ceiling for installation of another linear LED. This balanced the LED up-lights in the kitchen and lit the room. This allowed me to add accent lighting to feature the architecture.
I did the same up-lighting technique in the living room with sleek contemporary wall sconces to light the ceiling wooden beams. The reflected ceiling light accents the wood beams and minimizes the need for recessed cans to light the room. The recessed lighting is used to accent art, furnishings and architectural features.

The focal point of this project is undoubtedly the large pergola, which we carefully constructed from steel C-channel and rough cedar purlins. The combination of these materials resulted in a striking aesthetic that effortlessly marries strength and natural beauty. The warm tones of each play off one another and come alive in the sunlight, while the alternating basketweave layout of the slats offer even more visual interest as well as variation in the provided shade. The design concept was carefully planned to ensure the purlins fit snugly into the channel, cleverly concealing any visible fasteners. This attention to detail adds to the sleek and streamlined appearance of the pergola, elevating its visual appeal and rustic elegance.

Homeowner Kirk Holland bought a piece of paradise in Key West’s historic Casa Marina neighborhood after retiring and relocating from Atlanta, Ga. He commissioned architect Matthew Stratton, interior designer Jennifer Corredor, builder Denis Savoie and landscape architect Craig Reynolds to create his dream home. The plan: to set the stage for his proposal to then girlfriend, Judy, and embark on a new phase of his life.
Embracing a modern take on the Key West style famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses and laid-back attitude, Corredor designed a simple, elegant and unpretentious interior scheme for this 3,900-square-foot home. A tropical sensation flows freely with natural materials and a color palette that reflect the island’s backdrop of sandy beaches, brilliant skies and cresting ocean waves.
Polished white-glass tile flooring downstairs contrasts with African teak wood flooring upstairs, while cherry wood paneling and custom wall treatments create texture. To the breezy blue and white theme throughout, the designer added a zest of coral, inspired by the Royal Poinciana tree that frames the arbor by the pool. “The whole idea with ocean hues and wood tones is to emulate the surroundings,” Corredor says. “I think these elements add character to a space, as well as warmth.”
The great room reflects Corredor’s light airy approach. In the living area, accent pillows with a coral-print fabric and an “Axiom Glass Thorn” coral-hued bowl, both from Coconut Grove Gallery, add a dash of color as well as organic curves that augment the lines of the sofa and contrast with the angular glass tables. An ode to the home’s Key West atmosphere, Flower In Movement, a painting by artist Martha Dominguez, combines a floral motif with a wavy dimension that echoes the gardens as well as the ocean. “The architect used a NanaWall, which is a special feature,” Corredor says. “It can be pulled all the way back, entirely open, to create a seamless feel that the room carries on from inside to outside.”

Tectonic Design BuildDesign:
When our clients moved to Boulder from DC with their kids, they weren’t new to renovation: they knew exactly what they wanted. Having remodeled before, they came in with clarity, confidence, and excitement to collaborate.
Their home sits in a prime South Boulder location, just across from the South Boulder Rec Center and Fairview High School, a place woven into daily family life. But while the setting was ideal, the exterior didn’t reflect the warmth or character they envisioned. Improving curb appeal quickly became the focus of their Boulder exterior remodel.
Together, we reimagined the home’s first impression. We chose to preserve the original brick, giving it new life with a rich, earthy green that feels grounded in Colorado’s natural landscape. Wood accents were thoughtfully layered in to add contrast and warmth, softening the structure while enhancing its architectural character.
Build:
This project was a true exterior transformation. We refreshed the siding and installed a new metal standing seam roof, carefully selecting tones that complement the newly painted brick and unify the home’s palette. The materials not only elevate the aesthetic but also provide durability for Boulder’s shifting seasons.
To add dimension and break up the flatness of the façade, we introduced L-beams that create depth and subtle architectural interest. These structural elements give the home a stronger presence from the street: modern, clean, yet still welcoming.
The result is a cohesive and thoughtfully executed Boulder exterior remodel that reflects both the family inside and the vibrant South Boulder community around it.
