One challenge the design team faced were the restrictions put in place by the DNR's Wild and Scenic Rivers program, which monitored the height, materials, and setbacks of buildings along the river in order to maintain natural landscapes usable for all. Using these guidelines and regulations, Shelter sought to clad the building with natural-looking materials whenever possible. The finished home preserved the original stone basement and deck structure and on the upper floors neutral, reserved colors were chosen for the cladding.

A once dilapidated shed was converted into this fun, modern residence in the historical district of downtown Bend. The abandoned building had served as a neighborhood garage when it was originally constructed in the 1930's. Abiding by the historic district regulations, the new hoe was designed to replicate the original facade with three sliding doors that create a shared indoor/outdoor living space. Original planks of siding, pylons and floor joists were repurposed throughout. An open floor plan with a Malm fireplace further enhances the mid-century feel. The home is modest in size but the high ceilings and light interiors make the space feel generous and inviting. Winner of the High Desert Design Competition in 2016 and the Building a Better Central Oregon Award in 2017.

Nantucket is a small island vacation destination off the mainland of Massachusetts. The appeal of the villages is due to the restrained New England architecture, beaches, sailing, fishing, golf and quaint shops. Regulations imposed by the towns restrict the height and size of new homes and remodeling of existing homes. In consequence to this concern for scale and habitat architects are known for creative utilization of interior spaces. Created by Bentley and Churchill Architects this cottage is a wonderful example of fully utilized space, easy living interiors and with an eye towards the timelessness of the island. Jaeger & Ernst cabinetmakers were chosen for our design sensibility, craftsmanship and an ability to move seamlessly between cabinetry, furniture and millwork. Although each portion of the home is complex in it’s fitting and structure the overall impression is one of inviting simplicity.

There are 2 buildings, 4 units total. Keeping within City of Austin regulations and impervious cover restrictions, we were limited to 1600-1700 square feet per unit. Each unit boasts an open floor plan concept, lots of natural light with high windows and modern styling. All four units sold out soon after the first open house. They are rated 3 stars with the Austin Energy Green program.

A full historic restoration and renovation of a 1925 Carmel-by-the-Sea home, reimagined with a castle-inspired architectural theme. What began as a structural rejuvenation evolved into a comprehensive historic restoration, requiring close coordination with the local historic review board and county regulations to preserve the home's character while modernizing it for today's living. The result honors nearly a century of history while delivering a fully updated custom home.

This addition incorporates a great deal of symmetry as reflected in the skylights, lighting, closet layouts and window placement. The main goal for the owners of this 1926 house was an addition to gain more closet space near their main floor master bedroom. The opening from the sitting room to the addition was originally an exterior window that we widened. New built-in closets in the addition are easily accessed from the master bedroom at the end of the addition. In assessing the feasibility of the project, the first thing the designer did was to check the zoning regulations. After a thorough study, it was determined that a 7-foot side addition was possible. The existing house floors were not level. We replaced and sistered many joists as they had deteriorated over the 93 year age of the house. New white oak flooring covers both the addition and the affected sitting room and master bedroom.
