The second bedroom functions as a guest room, keeping with the feeling of an updated traditional home into a more modern, transitional space. Modern floral wallpaper lends a softness to the space while making the small bedroom feel fresh and modern. Photo: Heidi Solander.

Above and Beyond is the third residence in a four-home collection in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Originally the site of the abandoned Kachina Elementary School, the infill community, appropriately named Kachina Estates, embraces the remarkable views of Camelback Mountain.
Nestled into an acre sized pie shaped cul-de-sac lot, the lot geometry and front facing view orientation created a remarkable privacy challenge and influenced the forward facing facade and massing. An iconic, stone-clad massing wall element rests within an oversized south-facing fenestration, creating separation and privacy while affording views “above and beyond.”
Above and Beyond has Mid-Century DNA married with a larger sense of mass and scale. The pool pavilion bridges from the main residence to a guest casita which visually completes the need for protection and privacy from street and solar exposure.
The pie-shaped lot which tapered to the south created a challenge to harvest south light. This was one of the largest spatial organization influencers for the design. The design undulates to embrace south sun and organically creates remarkable outdoor living spaces.
This modernist home has a palate of granite and limestone wall cladding, plaster, and a painted metal fascia. The wall cladding seamlessly enters and exits the architecture affording interior and exterior continuity.
Kachina Estates was named an Award of Merit winner at the 2019 Gold Nugget Awards in the category of Best Residential Detached Collection of the Year. The annual awards ceremony was held at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference in San Francisco, CA in May 2019.

Made of 300, 10-foot steel blades set upright 8 inches apart, the award winning Cor-Ten Cattails Sculptural fence was designed for a home in Berwyn, Pennsylvania as a yard sculpture that also keeps deer out.
Made of COR-TEN, a steel alloy that eliminates the need for painting and maintains a rich, dark rust color without corroding, the fence stanchions were cut with a plasma cutter from sheets of the alloy.
Each blade stands 8 feet above grade, set in concrete 3 feet below, weighs 80-90 pounds and is 5/8 inch thick. The profile of the blades is an irregular trapezoid with no horizontal connections or supports. Only the gate has two horizontal bars, and each leaf weighs 1200 pounds.

This home underwent a stunning transformation, focusing on the kitchen, back pantry and laundry room. The result? A bright, open and inviting space that meets every goal. The kitchen exudes casual elegance, designed to welcome guests while offering exceptional functionality. It’s a space where mornings begin with coffee in a setting that feels both luxurious and livable.
The back pantry is a storage haven, cleverly concealing clutter and providing both style and organization. As for the laundry room, it now boasts a seamless flow, making everyday tasks effortless without the frustration of cramped cabinetry.
With transitional finishes and a timeless black-and-white palette, these spaces are not just beautiful but built to remain classic for years to come.

Kitchen renovation opens up the space into the living room and includes a kitchen island that was placed to accommodate a wider kitchen work area. Glass backsplash tiles and brushed brass fixtures update the space. Quartzite countertops complement the backsplash tiles. Photo: Heidi Solander.
