Named for the original homestead, the Aspen Leaf Ranch blends early ranch history with modern sensibility. The owner, an outdoorsman and native plant enthusiast, and former project manager of notable Seattle buildings (including the Olympic Sculpture Park and the Bullitt Center), tasked Best Practice Architecture with designing a modest yet comfortable home reflective of valley cabins and farmsteads. He desired a small home that was ‘light on the land’, yet flexible enough to accommodate visiting friends and family. Located in a quiet river valley 10 miles from the nearest town, the result is a humble compound firmly rooted in the rural vernacular. The Methow Valley was familiar to the owner from childhood ski and camping trips and he now has family who live in the area. The Valley is hot and dry in the summer and on average receives over 70 inches of snow each winter. Set in a narrow river valley below high mountain peaks, the owner wanted the new home to have a strong visual and physical connection to the surrounding landscape. For many years, the homestead was operated as a horse packing guide service, and an old agricultural barn remains that will eventually be repurposed into a ski waxing room, shop, and sauna. Two new structures make up the residential retreat: a one-bedroom main house and a carport with an adjoining guest suite, small office, and storage for outdoor equipment. Best Practice’s design prioritizes natural light and optimizes dramatic views of the surrounding meadow, forest, hills, and mountains “I wanted both the design and scale of the new buildings to reflect traditional ranch homes and cabins in the remote river valley with all the creature comforts of modern living,” said the homeowner. “Ensuring a strong connection to the outside throughout the seasons was a primary goal. Windows on all sides and three exterior doors allow me to track the many species of birds and wildlife that move through the property and access the ever-changing light and weather.” Best Practice carefully positioned the new structures to frame important vistas while minimizing disturbance to the native forest and meadow. The exterior finishes and details are consistent with historic cabins and barns in the area but stylized to acknowledge the new structure’s place in time. Metal roofing, siding, and a gravel skirt were chosen to reduce wildfire risk, and native plantings attract and support local birds and wildlife. Best Practice simplified the interior detailing with a nod towards a rural cabin aesthetic, incorporating painted beadboard, extensive built-in cabinetry, warm woods, a sizeable kitchen, and an open nook for daytime lounging and overnight guests. The design also took into account the owner’s collection of art, family heirlooms, and furniture gathered over many years. Best Practice designed this Methow Valley home to respect the history and beauty of the historic Aspen Leaf Ranch while embracing modern comforts. The design successfully meets a well-considered program for 4-season use and serves as a full-time rural retreat for the owner as well as a gathering place for friends and family.

We sat down together and helped her finalize her vision, supporting structure and proportions in CAD. The result was a one of a kind piece that was so much fun to build and admire once complete. The chartreuse high polished lacquer finish gives it a playful and retro feel. The inside is lined with a beautiful Pierre Frey wallpaper. The colors are complimented by remote control, recessed LED lights. We concealed the battery power pack inside a soft close drawer so there are not any unsightly cords running down the wall. Since our client is a connoisseur of fine spirits, we wanted to give him a place to make his drinks right where he stores them. So we created a walnut and black limba end grain cutting board pullout for him to enjoy. The Soss brass hinges allow the beveled glass panel doors to bi-fold and simultaneously expose a nice detail of the building process. The brass supports that hold the glass shelving are like icing on the cake of this creative piece. The Barber Bar Cabinet stands 90 inches tall and 4 feet wide and is made of solid hardwood. To give it the structure it needed to support a completely stocked bar of heavy glass bottles, we laced section between the cabinet and the base with 1x4 steel tubing. We also did a steel mortise bar stretcher between each leg and then welded a steel bar between the legs to keep the legs from racking. This piece was an incredibly challenging piece to build but we couldn’t be happier with how this turned out and our clients felt the same!

This St. Louis Park Minnesota home was built in 1938, with several remodeling updates and the addition of a four-season porch over the years. But the kitchen looked dated with its dark Oak cabinets, and the appliances were tired. So, the owners chose to transform a smaller kitchen and dining room into an amazing living/entertaining space. To open up the space the non-supporting wall that separated the kitchen and the dining room was removed. The new open design features a peninsula with seating for three, just right for casual dining and conversation. Extra-wide drawers below provide storage for those larger kitchen utensils. New 1 ½ inch Red Oak flooring was installed and stained to exactly match and connect the existing living room and dining room. White flat-panel upper and lower kitchen cabinets and drawers feature brushed nickel hardware. The white double bay undermount kitchen sink features Kohler faucets with detachable spray head. New stainless-steel appliances are featured throughout, and the custom wood-paneled clad stove hood is vented outdoors. But maybe the most interesting part of this kitchen’s appeal are the bright “Calacatta Plazo” Quartz countertops. This choice of this Quartz shows subtle gray veins. Finding Subway tile in the color of that gray vein was challenging. But it was worth it. “Greige” colored Subway tile was chosen for the backsplash. White grout and the horizontal orientation of the tile makes the room feel larger, making this backsplash the perfect complement to this kitchen design. With all this white the kitchen is already pretty bright. But the perfect lighting combination brings it all together. Pendant lights above the sink and peninsula offer just the right design touch. Bright, under-cabinet lights make meal preparation easy. The in-ceiling and pendant lights are on dimmers – something Rick suggests for all his remodeling projects. Lights and music for meal preparation are remotely controlled using Apple’s assistant, Siri. The result: A bright white kitchen that opens up the room and blends perfectly with the existing design.

By placing the TV up high across from the bed, the viewing angle is very comfortable and the TV height allows a 6'8" person to walk underneath. To support the 4K video distribution, we incorporated a full 5.1 surround sound audio system for this room. The wood fireplace was hand built with a small 4" x 5" picture as reference for the craftsman. This master suites lighting and A/V are all controlled via a handheld remote, iOS or Android devices and have simple commands like watch TV or goodnight to manage the lights and the A/V with the touch of a single button.
