Inspiration for a transitional family room remodel in Detroit

Our homeowners came to us in need of a bathroom remodel. Unique to this design is that the toilet and shower are in a separate room from the vanity. The space is separated by a pocket door. The vanity area has no door to the master bedroom; it is an open concept. This makes the vanity area almost serve as a dressing area due to the proximity of the walk in closet (and open concept). The shower offers an oversized bench and niche. The homeowners enjoy the rain shower head which is ceiling mounted. They also have a hand held body sprayer. We partnered with DeWils Cabinetry and Cambria Quartz for the vanity area. Double vanities, with full height tower cabinets, complete with glass doors in the top shelf, are not only decorative but offer tons of organized storage for toiletries. One of the other features we love about this cabinetry is the use of a spice rack style cabinet pull out. Design ideas for a southwestern landscaping in Phoenix.

Very poor-quality fabrics

 Beautiful design, but very disappointing product quality and customer service I purchased Mika outdoor sectional sofas in 2022 (Order #1599844). By 2024, despite meticulous care (stored indoors every winter), the seating already shows 5 tears. The fabric is of questionable quality—worse than that of some low-end outdoor furniture. A tiny hole quickly grows and becomes impossible to control… I reported the issue to customer service, but no solution was offered. It’s even impossible to purchase matching fabric to reupholster the seats. I recommend avoiding this product, or at the very least—if you're willing to take the risk—covering it with protective covers after each use, as the fabric is extremely fragile.

THE SETUP These homeowners had an outdoor kitchen built when they built their home several years ago. It was functional, but the aesthetic was underwhelming. The island was clad in the same stone that was on the house, and it had basic black granite countertops. They love to grill and host outdoor gatherings, so an upgrade was definitely in order. Design Objectives: Create an elevated outdoor space that aligns with the grandeur of the elegant home Design of the new space should flow with the architecture of the house Include a serving area with a beverage fridge, a sink, and a faucet Allow for workspace in the grill area Include island seating THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Creating a layout that is in sync with the exterior architecture of the home Sourcing the perfect state-of-the-art grill with all the latest bells and whistles, and placing in an ideal layout that maximizes functionality and hospitality Specifying materials that will withstand the elements Design Solutions: A large curved island designed to mirror the curve of the home’s breakfast nook exterior A separate sink area with a disposal and a beverage fridge offers a functional space for mixing drinks and serving food Custom limestone posts echo the limestone details on the exterior of the home Diresco Quartz countertops add elegance and durability – they are designed to be used outdoors in harsh climates Decorative tile clads the sides and back of the island A raised bed for flowers and herbs adds color and softness to the space Undercounter lighting adds ambiance at night THE RENEWED SPACE From great backyard to true oasis – an outdoor kitchen makes makes elegant outdoor cooking and dining possible. The homeowners had their first outdoor kitchen cookout experience right away and report that they couldn’t be happier!

Here’s an interesting job I completed recently in the town of Lymington which is a lovely costal town within the New Forest and on the west side of the Solent. This Terracotta tiled floor was installed in the kitchen and was suffering from an efflorescence issue due to an ongoing leak which resulted in the salts in the water becoming deposited on the surface of the tiles as the water evaporated leaving a white bloom on the surface. This process is more commonly known as efflorescence and is particularly common in old properties which have no damp proof membrane under the floor and white staining by the cupboards is especially visible in the below photograph. My client was eager to have the problem fixed, and so enlisted Tile Doctor to get the job done. To remove the efflorescence, the Terracotta tiled floor was acid washed using a mild dilution of Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up which is primarily sold to remove grout smears but is equally effective at removing mineral deposits such as the white salts left behind by efflorescence. The solution was scrubbed into the tiles using a stiff scrubbing brush and was successful at removing the white staining. Naturally it’s not advised to leave acid too long on any surface so the floor was treated in sections and then rinsed off with water and the residue removed using a wet-vacuum. Following this, the floor was power-scrubbed in combination with a diluted solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean. Pro-Clean is a versatile cleaner that also contains stripping properties, allowing it to break down and remove old sealers, it also does a nice job getting the grout clean. With the efflorescence treated and the floor now clean I was now happy with the condition of the tiles and give them a final rinse under pressure to ensure the floor was neutralised and any trace of products removed. The Terracotta tiled floor was then left to dry overnight and I came back to seal the floor the next day. To seal the tiles I used three coats of Tile Doctor Seal & Go Extra, which provides a robust surface seal, and is recommended for internal floors with the damp issues. Hopefully this quick report has offered some useful advice on how to treat efflorescence which is quite a common problem; naturally if you have further questions Tile Doctor does offer a free advice service so do get in touch. At grade Composite Aztec Decking using a hidden fasteners so no screws are showing. Block Retaining wall and at grade 24x24 pavers to deck. This is a permitted project in an Environmentally Critical Area of Seattle. Full survey and geotechnical reports were needed as well as changes to the best management practices during install.

The family liked having a general dining area as well as a formal dining room but wanted to change up the overall layout while opening up the kitchen. Design Objectives • Open up the space to the formal dining room and move the general dining area to be next to the living room • Give the space an expansive feel • Create multiple work areas • Create easy flow/walkways/continuity to allow a family of four to move about freely and complete different tasks in the space • Make the space adaptable for entertaining • Bring in more natural light Design Challenges • Work around obstacles like the fireplace in the dining room and structural fixtures between the dining room and the kitchen • Design a plan for a very big area that is proportional with no wasted space Design Solutions • A structural engineer was brought in to give options for relocating duct work and building a new header. • Combining the old kitchen and dining room resulted in a great new space that was very long. This allowed us to create new workspaces across two islands. • A contrasting color theme (bright perimeter cabinets and dark islands) helped ground the space, making it flow while still feeling intimate and inviting. The homeowners love their new space and report that the aesthetic and functional changes allow them to do more, both individually and together. As a hub for everything their busy lives entail – from day-to-day routines to a wide range of entertaining arrangements – their wide-open kitchen handles it all while keeping the space and the family connected.

This well-loved home belonging to a family of seven was overdue for some more room. Renovations by the team at Advance Design Studio entailed both a lower and upper level addition to original home. Included in the project was a much larger kitchen, eating area, family room and mud room with a renovated powder room on the first floor. The new upper level included a new master suite with his and hers closets, a new master bath, outdoor balcony patio space, and a renovation to the only other full bath on in that part of the house. Having five children formerly meant that when everyone was seated at the large kitchen table, they couldn’t open the refrigerator door! So naturally the main focus was on the kitchen, with a desire to create a gathering place where the whole family could hang out easily with room to spare. The homeowner had a love of all things Irish, and careful details in the crown molding, hardware and tile backsplash were a reflection. Rich cherry cabinetry and green granite counter tops complete a traditional look so as to fit right in with the elegant old molding and door profiles in this fine old home. The second focus for these parents was a master suite and bathroom of their own! After years of sharing, this was an important feature in the new space. This simple yet efficient bath space needed to accommodate a long wall of windows to work with the exterior design. A generous shower enclosure with a comfortable bench seat is open visually to the his and hers vanity areas, and a spacious tub. The makeup table enjoys lots of natural light spilling through large windows and an exit door to the adult’s only exclusive coffee retreat on the rooftop adjacent. Added square footage to the footprint of the house allowed for a spacious family room and much needed breakfast area. The dining room pass through was accentuated by a period appropriate transom detail encasing custom designed carved glass detailing that appears as if it’s been there all along. Reclaimed painted tin panels were added to the dining room ceiling amongst elegant crown molding for unique and dramatic dining room flair. An efficient dry bar area was tucked neatly between the great room spaces, offering an excellent entertainment area to circulating guests and family at any time. This large family now enjoys regular Sunday breakfasts and dinners in a space that they all love to hang out in. The client reports that they spend more time as a family now than they did before because their house is more accommodating to them all. That’s quite a feat anyone with teenagers can relate to!
