Nestled in the hills of Orinda, California, this 1951 residence is one of only seven extant homes, now known as “The Magnificent Seven”, designed by architect Olof Dahlstrand, a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright. With its low-slung rooflines, natural materials, and deep integration with the sloping landscape, the home is a pristine example of mid-century modern design inspired by Wright’s organic principles. Over the years, prior homeowners have emphasized preservation, ensuring that the house remained relatively untouched. Each owner has respected the original architecture and stayed true to Dahlstrand’s intent. When a family of five—two college-aged sons and a middle school-aged daughter—acquired the property, they were captivated by its history, legacy of care, and architectural significance. While they appreciated Dahlstrand’s original vision, they also recognized the need to adapt the home for contemporary living while preserving its design integrity. The remodel was conceived as a thoughtful response to the past—an effort to bring the house into the 21st century without compromising its soul. The primary mandate was to maintain architectural continuity while improving the functionality, comfort, and livability for a modern family. The design team—architects and contractor alike—worked with a shared reverence for the original architecture, allowing that mindset to guide even the most technical or pragmatic decisions. A key objective was to increase natural light in the kitchen—a departure from Wrightian principles of enclosed, intimate cooking spaces—while maintaining the home’s architectural language. The kitchen was reconfigured to foster a stronger connection to adjacent living spaces while retaining the underlying concept of spatial separation. One of the most transformative architectural changes was the removal of a ridge beam that was originally planned to remain visible through the kitchen. During construction, the team collaborated on a better solution: a wide-flanged steel beam concealed within the roof envelope. This subtle move preserved the clean lines and ceiling continuity, a modern update carried out with utmost respect for the existing framework. The home’s original powder room, previously accessible only through the kitchen, was relocated for better flow and privacy. A new powder room was carved out of former kitchen cabinetry—a narrow, interior space that could have felt dark and enclosed. To avoid this, the design extended the line of original transom windows into the new powder room and added a skylight above the vanity. The result is a bright and airy space that feels consistent with the rest of the home. Other updates included the installation of new solid-core interior doors with veneers carefully matched to the original mahogany, enhancing the continuity of the interiors. Even smaller decisions, such as placing the door knobs at 42 inches high, mirrored the original proportions. Every choice reflected a shared belief between the architect, contractor, and client: that new work should serve the integrity of the old. The home’s extensive interior redwood millwork and paneling was meticulously restored. Where new materials were introduced—such as the replacement redwood soffit paneling—the contractor took pains to find finish nails that matched the original, rather than using modern equivalents. This level of craftsmanship and collaboration defined the project. It extended even to the detailing of a blind door to the new powder room, which had to disappear into the existing redwood board-and-batten wall. It was a team effort: the owner found a suitable handle, the architects devised the custom in-swing mechanism, and the contractor executed it so the door aligned precisely with the battens. Throughout, the homeowners were deeply engaged in the design process. One, a meticulous design enthusiast, focused on aesthetic integrity and historic detail. The other brought a practical and function-driven perspective, ensuring that new fixtures and materials would be durable and require minimal maintenance. While the home’s location posed no major site challenges, sustainability was a key concern. The team upgraded the roof insulation, installed solar panels with battery storage, and added ductless mini-split cooling systems. Lighting was another area where modern technology was woven into a historic framework: new square LED fixtures echo the original custom perimeter soffit lights, maintaining the design language while offering advanced performance. A planned expansion of a bedroom into suite with a bathroom had to be shelved due to budget constraints and the high cost of below-grade foundation work. Still, the team focused their efforts on making the most of the existing footprint, resolving constraints through design ingenuity rather than adding square footage. This renovation represents a collaborative achievement in preserving and evolving a historically significant home. Every decision was shaped by a shared ethos among clients, architects, and contractor: to maintain the home’s architectural soul while updating it for contemporary life. PROJECT SCOPE & OBJECTIVES The homeowners are avid admirers of the Versace lifestyle and aesthetic and challenged our team to create a highly personalized primary suite that embodied the drama, sophistication, glamour, and artistic expression associated with the iconic fashion house. The objective was not simply to renovate an aging bathroom, but to completely reimagine the entire primary suite experience—including both the bathroom and adjoining walk-in closet—as a luxury wellness and dressing retreat. The existing bathroom and closet featured traditional finishes, compartmentalized spaces, builder-grade storage solutions, and a dated design vocabulary that no longer reflected the homeowners’ tastes or lifestyle. The scope of work included a complete demolition and redesign of the primary bathroom and custom walk-in closet, encompassing all finishes, cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, lighting, architectural details, decorative elements, custom storage systems, and specialty millwork. The design intent centered on creating a bold, immersive environment utilizing dramatic monochromatic tones, custom fabricated elements, statement lighting, oversized stone applications, curated artwork, and a sophisticated interplay of texture and materiality. Every component was carefully selected to contribute to a cohesive luxury experience where the bathroom and closet function as a unified extension of one another. The resulting design transformed a conventional primary suite into a highly customized sanctuary that reflects the owners’ passion for fashion, art, luxury, and contemporary design. PROJECT CHALLENGES One of the primary challenges was translating the essence of the Versace brand into a residential environment without creating a literal or themed interpretation. The goal was to capture the emotion, elegance, and drama associated with high fashion while ensuring the spaces remained timeless, refined, and highly functional. Another significant challenge involved balancing a predominantly dark color palette throughout both the bathroom and dressing room environments. Dark materials can easily feel heavy or oppressive if not carefully executed. Particular attention had to be given to lighting design, material selection, visual layering, and texture to ensure the spaces remained inviting while maintaining their dramatic character. The walk-in closet presented its own unique design challenge. The owners desired a dressing room that would function as an extension of the luxury bathroom experience rather than a separate utilitarian storage area. The challenge was to transform a standard builder-grade closet into a sophisticated fashion-inspired environment capable of displaying clothing, handbags, accessories, and collectibles in a manner consistent with the overall design vision. Additionally, the project required the successful integration of numerous statement elements—including oversized stone surfaces, custom lighting installations, decorative mirrors, artwork, architectural wall treatments, bespoke cabinetry, and specialty storage systems—while maintaining visual harmony and preventing the space from feeling overly busy or cluttered. PROJECT SOLUTIONS To achieve the desired aesthetic, our team developed a comprehensive design strategy centered around contrast, texture, craftsmanship, and visual drama. A sophisticated palette of charcoal, black, graphite, and metallic gold tones was employed throughout the suite, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of luxury hospitality environments and haute couture fashion houses. The focal point of the bathroom became the sculptural freestanding soaking tub positioned on a custom stone platform with LED lighting and framed by an oversized feature wall clad in dramatically veined stone. This installation establishes an immediate sense of luxury and serves as the visual anchor of the entire suite. The walk-in closet was reimagined as a boutique-inspired dressing room featuring custom-designed black oak cabinetry, integrated LED lighting, specialty display shelving, illuminated storage niches, custom accessory organization, and a central dressing vanity. The design intentionally blurs the line between residential closet and luxury retail environment, allowing fashion, accessories, and personal collections to become part of the overall design composition. To offset the darker finishes throughout both spaces, layered lighting was incorporated using recessed illumination, integrated LED accents, decorative fixtures, display lighting, and reflective surfaces. These elements create depth and dimension while highlighting the richness of the materials and craftsmanship. Custom fabricated cabinetry, oversized stone surfaces, designer mirrors, curated artwork, architectural wall treatments, and carefully selected decorative elements were utilized throughout the suite to create a fully immersive environment where every detail contributes to a unified design narrative. The completed project successfully transformed a dated primary suite into an extraordinary luxury retreat that merges the worlds of fashion, hospitality, wellness, and residential design. The result is a highly personalized environment that reflects the homeowners’ lifestyle while demonstrating exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design thinking, and meticulous execution.

Published in the NORTHSHORE HOME MAGAZINE Fall 2015 issue, this home was dubbed 'Manchester Marvel'. Before its renovation, the home consisted of a street front cottage built in the 1820’s, with a wing added onto the back at a later point. The home owners required a family friendly space to accommodate a large extended family, but they also wished to retain the original character of the home. The design solution was to turn the rectangular footprint into an L shape. The kitchen and the formal entertaining rooms run along the vertical wing of the home. Within the central hub of the home is a large family room that opens to the kitchen and the back of the patio. Located in the horizontal plane are the solarium, mudroom and garage. This new 1,560 square foot, three bedroom, two bath residence replaces a Paradise, CA home destroyed in the 2018 Camp Fire. The owners wanted an attractive and modest house to live in while they built their dream home on an adjacent lot. The house will later be used as rental income and provide much needed housing in Paradise. The back of the house faces west towards an excellent view of a stand of oaks that survived the fire. The large rear porch roof provides protection from unwanted glare and the setting summer sun, so the house does not overheat in the summer. The porch also extends the living space and provides excellent year round indoor/outdoor living. It is open framed with rafters so there is an expansive view to the forest and ample diffused daylight throughout the year. It also protects the home from prevailing weather patterns. The open floor plan provides an outstanding space for entertaining guests with large windows bringing in the outdoors. Even though the house is built on a sloped lot it is fully barrier free and employs universal design principles throughout including a curbless shower in the Primary Bath. Several energy efficient materials and methods were used while staying within a modest construction budget. The roof uses a 12” energy heel to allow a consistent insulation blanket in the attic and blown-in blanket (BIB) insulation was used in the walls to provide an R-23 wall assembly, much better than code requirement and better than standard construction. A cool roof, foil backed roof sheathing, heat pump HVAC system, heat pump water heater, and a whole house fan round out the energy efficiency measures of this house.

"TaylorPro remodeled our kitchen, replacing cabinets, countertops and appliances. Keeping with the same footprint of our original kitchen and keeping our original travertine floors, Kerry Taylor helped us select a palette of rich, natural colors and materials--mocha-maple glazed cabinets, handsome granite and polished travertine backsplash tiles--to create a warm and beautiful new kitchen. He offered excellent design suggestions for placements of cabinetry and appliances. He recommended and implemented window trim enhancements as well as paint color and lighting design that brought the kitchen and attached family room together with a modern and very warm look. He created a rich, textured backsplash behind the stovetop that enhances the modern stainless steel vent hood. We couldn't be more pleased with the character and design of the kitchen and family room suite. To begin with, Kerry gave us a detailed estimate covering the likely costs of labor, cabinetry, granite, tile backsplash, construction materials and appliances. His estimate for labor, granite and tile turned out to be ""spot-on"" accurate. Much to our surprise, for example, the granite slabs we selected from Daltile turned out to be exactly the price Kerry had estimated when evaluating the level of materials we would likely install in our kitchen. Kerry kept to his original labor costs, to the penny. Each week, he provided us with an invoice that showed, in percentages, exactly how much labor had been performed that week and how much remained to be done in future weeks. The amounts he charged each week for his labor were exact percentages of the amount of labor his crew had performed to that point. Though these invoices invited us to do a little math to confirm the accuracy of these percentages, Kerry's figures were consistently accurate. The only categories in which Kerry's original estimate did not conform to the actual costs were in the areas of supplies from Home Depot (needed for the remodeling) and supplies from paint and hardware stores (needed for painting). These materials ended up costing somewhat more that Kerry had estimated. However, Kerry did provide us with receipts for all of these supplies. Kerry's cabinet man, Jerry, made a very workable design using pre-fabricated cabinets; he then customized the sizes of at least half of these cabinets to conform to the requirements of the center island, cooktop and pantry spaces. We are very happy with the quality of the cabinets. We found the installation expertise of Jerry's installer, Gil, to be top-rate. His installation achieved a custom look and all the cupboards and drawers worked flawlessly. Kerry's crew, Jake, Randall and Kevin, were great guys to have on site. They respected our property (and our dog) and possessed both skill and integrity. They arrived daily at the time they specified and worked tirelessly to achieve what they set out to do. We couldn't have been happier with their work. Kerry was on site frequently to supervise and coordinate their work and the work of subcontractors. This sleek and contemporary Annex consisting of a small but very functional kitchen, Porch, Desk Area, Bedroom and Ensuite, was until recently a double garage, Designed for an older teenager/young man. We created a porch area with it's neat bespoke storage cupboard, not only to create a more luxurious, homely feel, but to create a clean functional area to house all the outside shoes and garments, whilst also creating additional wall space to enable us to hang a tv, floating shelves desk - an invaluable space and requirement for the client.

An Extensive Remodel in Bonita Bay, Bonita Springs, Florida. This transitional-inspired makeover consists of a completely transformed kitchen, family room and master bathroom. Many estate homes within Bonita Bay that have now aged twenty-five years are going through the remodeling and makeover process that updates both indoor and outdoor spaces that typically open up interior spaces, require new and updated kitchens, living and dining spaces, plus bedrooms, bathrooms and various other interior upgrades and improvements. The kitchen and family room were completely redesigned. This year round two-family cottage is comprised of seven modules which required just 25 days to construct in an off-site facility. When assembled, these prefabricated units form a building that is 38 metres long but less than 5 metres wide. The length offers a variety of living spaces while the constricted width maintains a level of intimacy and affords views of the lake from every room. Sited along a north-south axis, the cottage sits obliquely on a ridge. Each of the three levels has a point of access at grade. The shared living spaces are entered from the top of the ridge with the sleeping spaces a level below. Facing the lake, the east elevation consists entirely of sliding glass doors and provides every room with access to the forest or balconies. Materials fall into two categories: reflective surfaces – glazing and mirror, and those with a muted colouration – unfinished cedar, zinc cladding, and galvanized steel. The Dental Studio is a highly intricate building that uniquely links two separate stands of two neighbourhoods and straddling a four metre broad municipal servitude. The western part of the neighbourhood is an office precinct consisting of low scaled office buildings set around a communal access street and parking. It was designed for a leading dental practice with state of the art equipment and progressive philosophy of service. It presents itself as an uncomplicated rectangular structural mass that elegantly characterise an intersection of a major neighbourhood boulevard and is notable along the eastern end with an upright circulation tower. The western end on the other hand, is characterised with vertical solar control screens which serve a dual purpose, that is, sifting low down western sun rays as well as giving a serene appeal to the mass. The daring spotless form of the building is a truthful reflection of the nature of the sterile dental environment that is housed within. This houses the central vestibule and reception with a visual interface as well as pedestrian movements along the edge of the building. Healing and healthcare is a paradox that requires architectural intervention. It is this same paradox that informed measures taken towards developing this project as a revised prototype. Exacerbated by the need to research a building type that can promote healing environment, the Dental Studio attempts to create a closer harmony with nature through views, landscape and daylight.

Located near one of Houston’s busy shopping districts, the project consists of a full renovation of the hardscape around and existing pool back yard. The challenge for this project was inserting detailed exterior wood work into an existing yard and outdoor space. Connecting the house to the pool to the fence and the yard required quality craftsmanship and careful supervision. We worked closely with the client and landscape architect to develop the details to make it happen. The hardscape renovation makes extensive use of Thermory, a thermally modified wood product, around the existing pool and fence. SYNLawn synthetic grass was installed to cover the existing concrete driveway, thereby creating a much more useable yard space. Thoughtful lighting design makes the project come alive in the evening and highlights the warm wood feature wall and other areas around the pool.

Transforming this long-standing home on Bradgate Rd required more than a simple update—it called for a careful balance between renewal, structure, and respect for what was already there. The existing brick bungalow had strong bones, but the exterior was deteriorating, the carport was underutilized, and key interior spaces no longer supported the homeowners’ needs. Having lived in the home for decades, the goal wasn’t to start over—it was to rework the home into a more functional, comfortable space that could support the years ahead. The scope included a full exterior masonry refresh, where the front layer of brick was removed and replaced while maintaining the integrity of the original structure. The carport was fully enclosed and integrated into the home as a garage, and a new roof tied everything together with consistent detailing and long-term performance in mind. Inside, the layout was carefully reworked to introduce a new primary ensuite and completely renovate the main bathroom. Plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems were updated throughout, with a focus on accessibility, ease of use, and everyday comfort. The kitchen perimeter, bookcase, and laundry cabinets feature a Warm White finish, while the kitchen island cabinets are a Cherry Kaffe finish with Cambria Brittanicca Gold countertops. The kitchen also includes Emotive Astonished White Silk Florida Tile and Kohler’s Whitehaven farm sink and Simplice faucet. The client expressed their gratitude, stating, "Nancy was great about providing suggestions, and with her experience, she knew what would work well together. "We removed the peninsula and installed an island to improve flow. To have adequate clearance for the island, we had to take some space from their family room. This construction required a new support beam. We removed the existing soffits to accommodate taller cabinetry.” "The new design is great for their family.
