We came up with a modified floor plan that relocated the toilet and opened up the space. The tile work also makes the space feel more formal and exotic.

The Expansive Bel Air Open-Concept Living Room Transformation is a stunning remodel that seamlessly merges indoor and outdoor spaces to create an airy, inviting atmosphere. The design revolves around a massive sliding glass window that opens up to the patio, allowing natural light to flood the room while offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. This indoor-outdoor feel was exactly what the homeowners envisioned for their Bel Air residence, where entertaining guests and enjoying the California sunshine were top priorities. We complemented the space with wide-plank wood flooring and a sleek, minimalistic fireplace, enhancing the modern yet warm ambiance.
By incorporating a neutral color palette and carefully curated furnishings, we maintained a spacious and sophisticated aesthetic that flows effortlessly into the adjoining kitchen area. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the homeowners to select elements that aligned with their vision of a luxurious yet functional living area. Our team sourced high-quality materials locally to ensure a finish that not only looks beautiful but also stands up to the demands of everyday use. The result is an open-concept living room that perfectly embodies the Bel Air lifestyle.

Designed by Thayer Design Studio. We are a full-service interior design firm located in South Boston, MA specializing in new construction, renovations, additions and room by room furnishing for residential and small commercial projects throughout New England.
From conception to completion, we engage in a collaborative process with our clients, working closely with contractors, architects, crafts-people and artisans to provide cohesion to our client’s vision.
We build spaces that tell a story and create comfort; always striving to find the balance between materials, architectural details, color and space. We believe a well-balanced and thoughtfully curated home is the foundation for happier living.

Split Level 1970 home of a young and active family of four. The main public spaces in this home were remodeled to create a fresh, clean look.
The Jack + Mare demo'd the kitchen and dining room down to studs and removed the wall between the kitchen/dining and living room to create an open concept space with a clean and fresh new kitchen and dining with ample storage. Now the family can all be together and enjoy one another's company even if mom or dad is busy in the kitchen prepping the next meal.
The custom white cabinets and the blue accent island (and walls) really give a nice clean and fun feel to the space. The island has a gorgeous local solid slab of wood on top. A local artisan salvaged and milled up the big leaf maple for this project. In fact, the tree was from the University of Portland's campus located right where the client once rode the bus to school when she was a child. So it's an extra special custom piece! (fun fact: there is a bullet lodged in the wood that is visible...we estimate it was shot into the tree 30-35 years ago!)
The 'public' spaces were given a brand new waterproof luxury vinyl wide plank tile. With 2 young daughters, a large golden retriever and elderly cat, the durable floor was a must.
project scope at quick glance:
- demo'd and rebuild kitchen and dining room.
- removed wall separating kitchen/dining and living room
- removed carpet and installed new flooring in public spaces
- removed stair carpet and gave fresh black and white paint
- painted all public spaces
- new hallway doorknob harware
- all new LED lighting (kitchen, dining, living room and hallway)

This new construction home is located in Hinsdale, Illinois. The main goal of this kitchen was to create a real cook’s kitchen– great for entertaining and large family gatherings. The concept was to have this working kitchen loaded with appliances completely hidden since the space is open to the family room. O’Brien Harris Cabinetry in Chicago (OBH) seamlessly integrated the kitchen into the architecture. They created concealed appliance storage and designed cabinetry to look like furniture. The back wall of the kitchen was designed to look like a beautiful, paneled wall. The ovens were located off to the side – pulled up on legs so it felt lighter and not so heavy. OBH designed metal cuffs at the cabinet base so the unit looks like a piece of furniture. This kitchen has all the function but still is beautiful. obrienharris.com

This yoga retreat was designed to be an escape for our client to practice yoga and to receive in home massages. We kept a theme of soothing blues throughout the space. A collection of the client's treasured photographs from travel sit atop this charming velvet-covered recamier from Kravet. Two small Kravet Alder Side Tables and two glass candlestick lamps flank either side. Two small storage ottomans sit in front, allowing for flexibility in the space and ease of movement when needing to be cleared for yoga or setting up the massage table.

This beautiful Birmingham, MI home had been renovated prior to our clients purchase, but the style and overall design was not a fit for their family. They really wanted to have a kitchen with a large “eat-in” island where their three growing children could gather, eat meals and enjoy time together. Additionally, they needed storage, lots of storage! We decided to create a completely new space.
The original kitchen was a small “L” shaped workspace with the nook visible from the front entry. It was completely closed off to the large vaulted family room. Our team at MSDB re-designed and gutted the entire space. We removed the wall between the kitchen and family room and eliminated existing closet spaces and then added a small cantilevered addition toward the backyard. With the expanded open space, we were able to flip the kitchen into the old nook area and add an extra-large island. The new kitchen includes oversized built in Subzero refrigeration, a 48” Wolf dual fuel double oven range along with a large apron front sink overlooking the patio and a 2nd prep sink in the island.
Additionally, we used hallway and closet storage to create a gorgeous walk-in pantry with beautiful frosted glass barn doors. As you slide the doors open the lights go on and you enter a completely new space with butcher block countertops for baking preparation and a coffee bar, subway tile backsplash and room for any kind of storage needed. The homeowners love the ability to display some of the wine they’ve purchased during their travels to Italy!
We did not stop with the kitchen; a small bar was added in the new nook area with additional refrigeration. A brand-new mud room was created between the nook and garage with 12” x 24”, easy to clean, porcelain gray tile floor. The finishing touches were the new custom living room fireplace with marble mosaic tile surround and marble hearth and stunning extra wide plank hand scraped oak flooring throughout the entire first floor.
