In this bathroom the toilet was relocated from in front of the window to make the bathroom larger and more open. The curved wall was an aesthetic response to the necessary locations of plumbing connections, and this geometry inspired the custom sink. The sink and integral counter and backsplash are made of thermoformed corian. This piece was designed using 3d computer modeling software to perfectly fit the space, prefabricated remotely and shipped to the site.

This kitchen renovation is set in a 100-year-old apartment with many original details. The design seeks to introduce a contemporary aesthetic into this space without presenting a jarring juxtaposition of finishes. The new kitchen is a study of volume and mass expressed through simple material choices. The materials used are commonly found in historic New England architecture: cherry cabinets, a cleft-face slate floor, and soapstone counters and sink. These materials are also known to rapidly transform as they age. The cherry cabinets darken with time, the slate surface is worn smooth with use, and the soapstone gradually assumes a patina sympathetic to that of the aged finishes within the apartment. Much of the original woodwork was sanded and refinished, and the plaster lathe walls patched and repainted. The finished kitchen is inviting, warm, and functional, and it renews this historic apartment as a desirable living space for the next 100 years.

Reverse Shed Eichler
This project is part tear-down, part remodel. The original L-shaped plan allowed the living/ dining/ kitchen wing to be completely re-built while retaining the shell of the bedroom wing virtually intact. The rebuilt entertainment wing was enlarged 50% and covered with a low-slope reverse-shed roof sloping from eleven to thirteen feet. The shed roof floats on a continuous glass clerestory with eight foot transom. Cantilevered steel frames support wood roof beams with eaves of up to ten feet. An interior glass clerestory separates the kitchen and livingroom for sound control. A wall-to-wall skylight illuminates the north wall of the kitchen/family room. New additions at the back of the house add several “sliding” wall planes, where interior walls continue past full-height windows to the exterior, complimenting the typical Eichler indoor-outdoor ceiling and floor planes. The existing bedroom wing has been re-configured on the interior, changing three small bedrooms into two larger ones, and adding a guest suite in part of the original garage. A previous den addition provided the perfect spot for a large master ensuite bath and walk-in closet. Natural materials predominate, with fir ceilings, limestone veneer fireplace walls, anigre veneer cabinets, fir sliding windows and interior doors, bamboo floors, and concrete patios and walks. After photo. There is a marked difference in this small side garden now! What was once a rather nondescript area with "filler" greenery has now become an inviting walk through a lush tropical setting. Adding more to this small space actually gives the impression that the area is much larger than before. Natural Blue stone pavers from Stone Garden, NC.
