With a panoramic back deck overlooking downtown Asheville, this home is positioned on a sloping such that there is ample, level driveway, and plenty of windows to take in the long-range mountain views. Open interior spaces and lots of lighting and ample master closet space were important to these clients.
A practical, dog-washing station in the mudroom doubles as a handy rinse-off spot for muddy shoes or boots.

This beautiful kitchen showcases Maple cabinets with Medalllion's White Icing finish and Brookhill raised panel doors. The countertops are quartz in Cambria's Montgomery with a bevel edge profile. The farmhouse sink is a 60/40, the washing side more spacious than the rinse side. The height difference and large crown give the kitchen an extra sense of elegance.

A hand shower is a must in almost every shower. How else do you rinse your "private parts"? My Dad use to call a hand shower "A Buppee washer"! Ha Ha, hats off to you Dad!

When these homeowners called us, they wanted to remodel their kitchen. When we arrived for our initial consultation, their water heater had just broken and was flooding their home! We took their kitchen from the 1990s to a modern beautiful space. Many transformations took place here as we removed a staircase to close in a loft area that we turned into a sound insulated music room. A cat playroom was created under the main staircase with 3 entries and secondary baths were updated. Design by: Hatfield Builders & Remodelers | Photography by: Versatile Imaging

These delightful homeowners came to us desirous of a kitchen with improved function, an open floor-plan and modernized look. Their dated kitchen was galley-style with a peninsula and was not conducive to cooking or entertaining. We began by removing a load bearing wall from the galley-style kitchen to create an open-concept kitchen that seamlessly connected the dining room, allowing for the use of an island providing more functional space. We relocated a window permitting the addition of more cabinets for storage and improved function. The custom white painted perimeter cabinets and stained maple island makes this kitchen classy and timeless. In addition to the kitchen transformation, we also refreshed their powder bath creating more space with a smaller wall-mount sink and toilet. We finished the update with new wallpaper and a light fixture. The result is a stunning kitchen, dining room and powder bath our homeowners can entertain and enjoy for years to come.

A stunning outdoor living space with brilliant lighting. The firepit and stairsteps are underlit and timed to go on at dusk every evening. Blue flagstone was the perfect tile selection for the space. It both ties in and compliments the gray paint of the home while offering plenty of dimension outdoors. The patio not only houses an outdoor living room but helps to define the other spaces of the patio as well. The dining area has room for an eight-person dining table.
An outdoor kitchen complete with a built-in grill, sink, and refrigerator completes the space. The homeowners can grille, rinse off their dirty dishes, and grab a fresh drink all while watching their team take the lead on tv.

This spacious, multi-level backyard in San Luis Obispo, CA, once completely underutilized and overtaken by weeds, was converted into the ultimate outdoor entertainment space with a custom pool and spa as the centerpiece. A cabana with a built-in storage bench, outdoor TV and wet bar provide a protected place to chill during hot pool days, and a screened outdoor shower nearby is perfect for rinsing off after a dip. A hammock attached to the master deck and the adjacent pool deck are ideal for relaxing and soaking up some rays. The stone veneer-faced water feature wall acts as a backdrop for the pool area, and transitions into a retaining wall dividing the upper and lower levels. An outdoor sectional surrounds a gas fire bowl to create a cozy spot to entertain in the evenings, with string lights overhead for ambiance. A Belgard paver patio connects the lounge area to the outdoor kitchen with a Bull gas grill and cabinetry, polished concrete counter tops, and a wood bar top with seating. The outdoor kitchen is tucked in next to the main deck, one of the only existing elements that remain from the previous space, which now functions as an outdoor dining area overlooking the entire yard. Finishing touches included low-voltage LED landscape lighting, pea gravel mulch, and lush planting areas and outdoor decor.

Kitchen sink wall of the kitchen.
Kitchen sink is 4-feet long and is divided 1/3 and 2/3s with a low saddle. We originally designed the kitchen for a 3' long sink, but the cabinet shop ordered the wrong base (4' instead of 3'). Luckily the sink was fabricated onsite and they were happy to bump it up to 4 feet. If ever there was a sexy sink, this is it.
Counter tops and sink are fabricated from soapstone (Warmstone, Livingston, MT).
Dishwasher is Bosch (they are quiet, just like they claim... HOWEVER, its b/c they don't have the little noisy food grinder in the bottom, so you have to rinse your dishes completely or the drain gets clogged up really fast).
Cabinet fronts are solid Alder (Crazy Mountain Cabinetry, Livingston, MT). Drawer pulls are from Signature Hardware.

In order to refinish and re-stain this deck in Parsippany, NJ we first had to remove the existing dark, almost black stain. We started with a thorough, high-pressure power-wash with bleach. We then used Sherwin Williams’ brand “SuperDeck: Stain & Sealer Remover” chemical stripping/cleaning solution. It was applied liberally, scrubbed, brushed and rinsed off. Since this deck was constructed with Western Red Cedar – a wood with a chemical tannin – we needed to restore the wood with SuperDeck’s “Revive”, which nuetralizes the wood’s natural tannin and restores it to a bright, clean, bare-wood deck. “Revive” is not a cure-all, however. There were still spots of old stain and tannin bleed after the stripping and cleaning, so we power-sanded the entire surface of both decks using coarse- to fine-grit sanding discs. It was finally stained with Sherwin Williams brand SuperDeck Semi-Transparent deck stain in "Classic Barn Red".

Kowalske Kitchen & Bath was hired as the remodeling contractor for this first floor remodel in the countryside of Oconomowoc, WI. By opening the kitchen up to the living room, the layout is better for hosting family gatherings. The entire family can be together in the kitchen and living room – cooking or spending time together. Highlights of this country kitchen include a window seat, walk-in pantry and space for their treasured piano.
Project Goals
+ Restore the beauty of their family home, that was built by the homeowner’s grandfather
+ Cooking functionality for their family farm
+ Add a workstation sink for easy food prep
+ Pantry storage space for canned items & wine collection
+ Design that honors the mid-century ranch bones of the house her grandfather built and their own traditional style
Challenges & Issues
+ Needed space to highlight their piano, since the homeowner is an avid pianist
+ Old layout didn’t have good views of their outdoor space – the lake, gardens and chicken coop
+ Kitchen was too small and cut off from the rest of the home
+ The heat and air conditioning did not function well due to several past additions
Country Kitchen Features:
Cooking Kitchen – We created a larger kitchen by expanding into the old dining room. The homeowners needed more space for canning vegetables, cooking and entertaining.
Mid-Century Country Design – The ranch home was built in the 1950s so we kept the mid-century and country kitchen design aesthetic by using hickory wood, tall verticals and long horizontals.
Kitchen Window Seat – A custom window seat with a curved backrest creates a gathering spot in the kitchen. This connects the home to the outdoor view of the lake where the family fishes and ice skates in winter. The bench is large enough to be used as a guest bed when they have visitors. The cozy nook has shelving, art lights, and a hidden radiator underneath to keep it warm and toasty.
Window Backsplash – Along the range wall, a new window backsplash features the beautiful view of the farm driveway, trees and gardens.
Minimalistic Hood – The hood with the wood shelf mimics the new fireplace mantel and ties the country kitchen and living room together.
New Pantry – The old kitchen area was converted into the new pantry and a laundry room. The pantry is their working kitchen where they can store food, their wine collection, and have countertop space for small appliances. Butcher block countertops, colorful wallpaper and a new window make the pantry inviting. Adjustable shelves allow for flexible storage options. The pocket door can be closed when they have guests.
Recycled Ash Flooring in Kitchen – The homeowners chose an eco-friendly flooring for their country kitchen. The beautiful varied width wood planks are from recycled ash trees from Milwaukee parks.
Workstation Sink – This sink has sliding platforms that hold bowls, colanders and cutting boards to multiply the countertop by going deep instead of wide. The sink can be used to chop, rinse, prep, dry dishes, hold hot dishes and clean up after a meal more efficiently.
Country House Living Room:
New Tile Floor – To better conduct the heat, we replaced the old wood floors with porcelain tile. New radiators, insulation, ductwork, and enclosing the basement staircase improved the function of their HVAC.
Fireplace Makeover – To create a new focal point for the living room, we installed a new fire box, new mantle, and floor to ceiling stone. The goal was to draw the eye up to the vaulted beamed ceiling.
Open Concept Layout – The wall between the kitchen and living room was removed to connect the two spaces. We added new cabinetry along the wall with a tall bookcase. Since they didn’t use their formal dining room, a small dining table was added to the living room.
New Railing & Stairs – The staircase to the kitchen area was tricky because we needed to find a style that would make it feel airy. We did a glass enclosure with a simple metal railing and moved the staircase to the center of the room to allow room for the piano.
