The client needed to correct drainage issues in their front yard and also improve the overgrown side yard. The design opportunity became incorporating a dry creekbed from the point of roof run-off, through the side yard and out beyond the backyard. A meandering stepper path of rounded river jacks crisscrosses the creekbed. Large glacial slabs act as footbridges where path and creekbed intersect. Bamboo screens follow the path nestled amidst shady plantings. Back at the front entry, decorative posts were replaced with a heftier design incorporating new light fixtures. Overall, pragmatically-solving drainage issues also brought a new landscape experience to the property.

This 'Tree House' concept features an open plan on the main floor with an outside patio and fire pit that allows the owner to experience the natural outdoors. A stairway provided access to the private master suite on the second level and features an adjacent, covered balcony. The stairway continues up to the 'eagle view' loft at the top level that includes a bath, a bar, and features a set of sliding windows that can be slid open for an 'open air' balcony or closed when the weather requires, while still providing a view.

Our clients had a very clear vision for what they wanted in a new home and hired our team to help them bring that dream to life. Their goal was to create a contemporary oasis. The main level consists of a courtyard, spa, master suite, kitchen, dining room, living areas, wet bar, large mudroom with ample coat storage, a small outdoor pool off the spa as well as a focal point entry and views of the lake. The second level has four bedrooms, two of which are suites, a third bathroom, a library/common area, outdoor deck and views of the lake, indoor courtyard and live roof. The home also boasts a lower level complete with a movie theater, bathroom, ping-pong/pool area, and home gym. The interior and exterior of the home utilizes clean lines and warm materials. In this complete rebuild of a mid-century modern home, the design flows from an analysis of the varied site conditions already present and reinforces key relationships to the site while establishing new ones. From a relocated street level entry, a careful sequence follows the slope and curates the vertical movement through the home from earthbound experience to the open sky and panoramic views. Each level takes on a different purpose - first, establishing new ties to the street, then anchoring family spaces to the south-facing garden, turning inwardly focused at the sleeping level, and ultimately dissolving at the top level living spaces and roof deck to reveal panoramic connections to the city and bay. The Frick Environmental Center is project of Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in partnership with the City of Pittsburgh, with national architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Pittsburgh office leading a team comprising artists, environmental restoration specialists, and engineers, and Pittsburgh-based construction firm PJ Dick bringing their experience with over 50 LEED-certified buildings to the project. Working in close collaboration with the City of Pittsburgh, the Parks Conservancy will manage and operate the Frick Environmental Center and the surrounding 115 acres of the Frick Nature Reserve portion of Frick Park.

Joe Fletcher Atop a ridge in the Santa Lucia mountains of Carmel, California, an oak tree stands elevated above the fog and wrapped at its base in this ranch retreat. The weekend home’s design grew around the 100-year-old Valley Oak to form a horseshoe-shaped house that gathers ridgeline views of Oak, Madrone, and Redwood groves at its exterior and nestles around the tree at its center. The home’s orientation offers both the shade of the oak canopy in the courtyard and the sun flowing into the great room at the house’s rear façades. This modern take on a traditional ranch home offers contemporary materials and landscaping to a classic typology. From the main entry in the courtyard, one enters the home’s great room and immediately experiences the dramatic westward views across the 70 foot pool at the house’s rear. In this expansive public area, programmatic needs flow and connect - from the kitchen, whose windows face the courtyard, to the dining room, whose doors slide seamlessly into walls to create an outdoor dining pavilion. The primary circulation axes flank the internal courtyard, anchoring the house to its site and heightening the sense of scale by extending views outward at each of the corridor’s ends. Guest suites, complete with private kitchen and living room, and the garage are housed in auxiliary wings connected to the main house by covered walkways. Building materials including pre-weathered corrugated steel cladding, buff limestone walls, and large aluminum apertures, and the interior palette of cedar-clad ceilings, oil-rubbed steel, and exposed concrete floors soften the modern aesthetics into a refined but rugged ranch home.

In this house, one enters through the Outdoor Living space through an arched, louvered door unit which is repeated as a window element for an adjacent Study. This elevated deck, Equinox louvered roof, and fireplace were designed to seamlessly blend with the architectural elements of this 100 yr old historic brick home. Starting with the Wolf PVC deck, it has 3 distinct areas. The fabulous lounge area features an Equinox motorized pergola, white PVC columns with brick veneer base with ceiling fans and Bromic heaters; full sun, full shade, hot or cold, this space will always be comfortable. We have the experience to build in remote parts of Benton County. Our goal was to get as much of the construction done before the rains made the access road impassable to large trucks. We poured the foundation on an expedited contract and agreed on the rest of the details in early October. The framing and roofing proceeded quickly followed by the windows, siding and decking.
