Views of the Atlantic and Katama Bay from the second floor were a driving force behind the Design of this home built several years ago in Edgartown. The Gambrel roof provides great headroom on the second floor with dormers in critical areas for windows and doors. Subtle curves soften the edges and a mix of materials help to reduce the scale and add interest to the exterior. The Porte Cochere provides access to the pool area as well as an entire wall of storage closets for the trappings of summer. Attention to detail and more than ample natural light make this house a very pleasant experience.

A meandering stepper path of rounded river jacks crisscrosses the creekbed. Large glacial slabs act as footbridges where path and creekbed intersect. Bamboo screens follow the path nestled amidst shady plantings. Back at the front entry, decorative posts were replaced with a heftier design incorporating new light fixtures. Overall, pragmatically-solving drainage issues also brought a new landscape experience to the property.

This 2,700 square-foot renovation of an existing brick structure has provided a stunning, year round vacation home in the Lake Sunapee region. This home is located on a one acre parcel of land near the banks of the Milwaukee River in the older established subdivision of Sleepy Hollow Estates in Mequon, Wisconsin. The inspiration for this Glen Cove Residence was to bring the desired by many, contemporary and modern lifestyle of a down town loft and establish it in a neighborhood in the suburbs amongst traditional style homes. Sleepy Hollow Estates like many older established neighborhoods throughout the North shore and Westside communities of Milwaukee had great local architects such as John Randall McDonald and Russell Barr Williamson, who built contemporary master pieces amongst very traditional style homes. This created diversity in the style of homes in these neighborhoods which for the people living in them and the people just passing by, an experience of harmony and cultural lifestyle. Unfortunately today, many new neighborhood developments lack harmony and cultural lifestyle and don’t allow for homes such as this Glen Cove Residence to be built. Our clients had a very clear vision for what they wanted in a new home and hired our team to help them bring that dream to life. Their goal was to create a contemporary oasis. The main level consists of a courtyard, spa, master suite, kitchen, dining room, living areas, wet bar, large mudroom with ample coat storage, a small outdoor pool off the spa as well as a focal point entry and views of the lake. The second level has four bedrooms, two of which are suites, a third bathroom, a library/common area, outdoor deck and views of the lake, indoor courtyard and live roof. Project Kagiso is a Live Build Architecture project ran by The University of Nottingham for which I was a tutor. Second year BArch students, working alongside local NGOs, design and build indoor and outdoor classroom facilities for a nursery in the Limpopo province of South Africa. The site is remote and sits in a region where poverty is high and resources low. Project Kagiso aims to provide this community with life-changing facilities whilst at the same time allowing the Nottingham students to gain hands-on building experience and the chance to work amongst and with their client. RHEINZINK ROOF PANELS PLAY KEY ROLE IN UNIQUE RESIDENTIAL WATER COLLECTION SYSTEM Located on a steeply sloped site in the central Texas hill country, visitors to the Cascading Creek House look down on the unique water-collection system of the house when entering from the street above. Descending the steps at the property’s entry, the experience begins with the structure’s paired zinc roofs. The northern roof collects rainwater from the sudden downpours that are characteristic of the area and deposits it into a central trough concealed by a line of solar thermal assemblies. The trough culminates in a giant scupper that feeds rainwater into an open cistern before being stored in a 30,000 gallon tank buried beside the house. The scupper can be run artificially as a fountain. The storage tank also collects runoff from the hardscape on the sloped lot. The stored water ties into an extensive climate conditioning system which utilizes water source heat pumps and radiant loops to supply both the heating and cooling for the residence. Design for the project and its innovative technological features was done by Bercy Chen Studio, Austin. Principal Thomas Bercy selected RHEINZINK PrePATINA blue-grey Double Lock Standing Seam Panels to clad the 3,200 sq. ft. roof area. “We used the zinc for aesthetic purpose as well as durability,“ Bercy said. “We were looking for a natural color palette that would work with the other materials on the house. The grey of the RHEINZINK worked perfectly with the grey tones of the Lueder limestone. Located amongst continuous vineyards on the broad flood plain of the Napa River, creating a strong sense of place was foremost. Rich in a culture of wine making and production from the land, the site demanded a design solution that honored its history and elevated the experience of the land. The house pays homage to its context by creating a reimagined agrarian compound. Conceived as a family of smaller buildings, the architecture comes together around a shaded patio and pool. The kitchen, dining, and living spaces all flow onto the shaded outdoor patio and gardens. Low-sloped gable roofs evoke the agricultural history of the region and echo the gentle slope of the foothills beyond. The home remains understated – quietly drawing one’s attention back to the magnificent natural features of the landscape. Gently pulled back into the heart of the serene vineyards, it is carefully oriented with Stag’s Leap at the foot of the Vaca Mountains to the East and the Mayacamas Range to the West. Scenic views continue uninterrupted through the home. Large window walls slide open and pocket on either side of the house, connecting the family to the outdoors and building a personal experience of place on the Valley floor. “If we can enrich people’s lives, and just maybe inspire them to do something beyond what they might otherwise have done, that brings us great satisfaction.” – Stan Field, fA Principal The connection of the architecture to the land goes beyond its visual connectivity. It is a respite from urban life, designed to bring one back to the basics: a love of family, land, food, and of course, wine.
