1. Safety Light is an amazing thing. It illuminates everything around us and allows us to see. Unfortunately, every night the sun removes itself along with its full spectrum of light. Now those things that we would normally see like steps, trees, or pools become difficult to see. Climbing stairs without lighting is a great way to fall. Even worse is if you miss the stairs and run face first into a tree. Worse than that is if you fall into the pool. You can see where this is going. Lighting up a landscape is important for safety. Any family or friends who aren’t familiar with the property could be endangered without a properly lit environment. 2. Security I promise these aren’t scare tactics, but security is a valid concern. Thieves prospecting a property will look in from the street. A well-lit building will have a better chance of scaring off a potential burglar compared to a non-lit darker front-yard. It is much easier to sneak around in the dark than in a well-lit beautiful landscape. 3. Pets were a driving force in the redesign of Nine Point Something. A desolate dog run was eliminated and replaced with pup-friendly grasses and other plantings to encourage curiosity and engagement. Drifts of sumac provided cover for one of the client's hobbies- birding. VISION AND NEEDS: Homeowner sought a ‘retreat’ outside of NY that would have water views and offer options for entertaining groups of friends in the house and by pool. Being a car enthusiast, it was important to have a multi-car-garage. MCHUGH SOLUTION: The client sought McHugh because of our recognizable modern designs in the area. We were up for the challenge to design a home with a narrow lot located in a flood zone where views of the Toms River were secured from multiple rooms; while providing privacy on either side of the house. The elevated foundation offered incredible views from the roof. Each guest room opened up to a beautiful balcony. Flower beds, beautiful natural stone quarried from West Virginia and cedar siding, warmed the modern aesthetic, as you ascend to the front porch.

This once empty yard was transformed with perennial gardens, raised garden beds, a cute chicken coop, and boxwood hedge with a garden gate. The raised beds are home to strawberries, vegetables, herbs, lavender and annuals.

Our doors have several superior features: - Metal-plastic doors – lighter (around 120lbs for a door unit) than iron and steel doors, but no less strong and reliable! This space is perfect for entertaining! When the owners originally moved in, this deck was not here. There were several steps down from the kitchen door, and the stone slabs were a toe-stubbing minefield. We added the deck and designed it perfectly for entertaining. Since we had several large pine trees removed from the property, we increased sun exposure creating a need for more shade. We had this awning custom made by PJ Canvas in Santa Rosa, CA. The awning tucks neatly under the roof of the house during the rainy months.
